1809 Tarragona 5 Pesetas Siege Coinage

After Napoleon deposed the Spanish Royal Family at Bayonne in 1808, he installed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, as the King of Spain. Napoleon had anticipated that the Spanish people would be glad to be rid of their unpopular Bourbon rulers.

Unfortunately for the French, this almost instantly precipitated a massive counter reaction from the Spanish people. In 1809, Bourbon loyalist forces were besieged in the city of Tarragona, where this piece was minted while under siege. On the reverse, it proclaims loyalty to Ferdinand VII as the legitimate king of Spain, and on the reverse is the coat of arms of Tarragona.
