If Bang Zoom Dubbed My Hero Academia and Funimation Dubbed One Punch Man (Part 1)

So, let's assume that Viz Media got the rights to the anime adaptation of My Hero Academia as they did with the manga and Crunchyroll gets the rights to the webcomic classic One Punch Man. That means My Hero Academia is dubbed in Los Angeles by Bang Zoom Studios on behalf of Viz Media and One Punch Man is dubbed in Dallas-Fort Worth by Funimation Entertainment on behalf of Crunchyroll. And as you would expect, Bang Zoom gives My Hero Academia a Los Angeles-based union dub and Funimation provides One Punch Man a standard non-union dub with their respective talent pools.

In the case of Viz Media/Bang Zoom's My Hero Academia, the cast would be a mix of LA-area voice actors, bicoastal actors shifted into other roles, and actual Funimation dub actors keeping their respective roles, given the large and varied cast. And for all intents and purposes, only major and/or notable enough characters will be listed here. So without furtherado....

The Two Italies: A Kaiserreich Italy Rework Proposal (Miscelleanous)

Links to Part 1 and Part 2

Hello, everyone. This is Ficboy, the author of "The Two Italies: A Kaiserreich Italy Rework" (a proposal for a KR Italy rework). When I wrote up the proposal and released it in two parts, I was glad to see the warm reception to the idea of a KR Italy rework from most of you as it is sorely outdated and underserved and Italy is a fairly important nation in both OTL and KR and the mod currently doesn't provide a good representation of it's political situation and is filled with many inaccuracies. The rework proposal, involving the Italian Socialist Republic (RSI) in the Peninsula/Sicily, the Kingdom of Italy in Sardinia and Austrian-occupied Veneto, is the kind of proposal that would give Italy a plausible and grounded setup based on it's political and military situation whilst preserving some of the old KR Italy elements in a reimagined better form, like most KR reworks. The China-Taiwan conflict was something I already had in mind when it came to writing the KR Italy rework proposal as it shares the major civil war, successful socialist revolution, geography, shared founding figure (Giuseppe Garibaldi/Sun Yat-sen) and irredentist nationalism aspects. And hey, a little bit of Allohistorical Allusion doesn't hurt either.

When it came to publishing and writing the proposal, I had relied on some Italian socialist history books and articles from websites like Libcom.org as well as biographies of Benito Mussolini for my research and it was admittedly rudimentary when it came to certain aspects for the RSI and Sardinia. The feedback from some of you has actually led me to learn some things about 20th century Italian politics and more importantly change certain aspects of the rework proposal such as: Emmanuel Filberto and Prince Amedeo as the Kings of Sardinia after Victor Emmanuel III's abdication, Carlo Rosselli's Action Party as a minor Vanguardist-style faction for the RSI aligned with Armando Meschi's USI Anarchists, Emilio Lussu being assassinated by Mussolini's goons similar to the OTL assassination of Giacomo Matteoti, the Italian People's Party (PPI) undergoing a rightward shift under Alcide de Gasperi and his successor Stefano Cavazzini, the Maximalists being split into two major factions with one that is essentially part of Benito Mussolini's Fascists and one being a major faction/path of their own led by rising star Pietro Nenni (True Maximalists), the RSI using the Italian Wars of Independence against Austria-Hungary as the basis to reclaim Veneto and fuel revanchist nationalism alongside the other OTL factors that led to Fascism and a Royalist partisan insurgency in the south that will erupt into rebellion and support the Sardinians during the Second Weltkrieg. I've also established some other details about the rework that others may not catch on well such as: The Italian Socialist Republic serving as an inspiration for the Commonwealth of Britain up to providing actual support, the RSI's Ministers and Generals being a mix of current and new ones, Sardinia's Ministers and Generals being a mix of base KR Sardinia, the Italian Republic, the Two Sicilies and the Papal States to an extent, Pietro Nenni defecting from the Italian Republican Party to the Italian Socialist Party due to the latter's expotential growth in membership and sharing revolutionary socialist republican sentiments, the PPI is still called by that name and founded by Luigi Sturzo initially following left-wing Christian socialism only to experience a major shift to right-wing Christian conservatism after the Italian Civil War with people like de Gasperi and Cavazzini in charge, the Vatican being a major institution used by the Savoyard monarchy of Sardinia to gain international legitimacy by appealing to Catholic fervor against Syndicalism and Sardinia being an exploration of what makes a government legitimate and it's efforts to assert independence and not become a French puppet state whilst keeping friendly ties with National France regardless of who's in charge. In that regard, RSI is similar to it's pre-rework KR counterpart but with major changes like the PSI and Sardinia is a spiritual successor to old KR Sardinia, the Italian Republic and the Two Sicilies as well as a bit of the Papal States thrown in for good measure.

In relation to the above, I've also renamed the PSI's Ordinovists as the Communists to account for not only Antonio Gramsci's Ordinovists adhering to council communism and collective executive factionalism with Amadeo Bordiga's Abstentionists who also agree with the idea of an ongoing radical revolution and abolishing capitalism but clash over the exact approach. Still, the key aspects of the KR Italy rework proposal are still there and shall stay as such: Major defeat at the hands of the the Austrians at Trento on the Asiago Plateau leading to mass desertions and surrenders in the final months of the war, Italy being the next major Entente country to leave the war by signing the Armistice of Venice with Austria-Hungary in 1919, Italy undergoing two years of anti-government revolutionary socialist unrest after the Armistice, the 1920 election resulting in a landslide victory for the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and subsequent socialist unity after the success of the Syndicalist revolution in France, the Italian Civil War lasting from 1921 to 1923 between the socialist Italian Republicans and the monarchist Italian Royalists resulting in a Republican victory, Austro-Hungarian political reorganization and economic reconstruction preventing any form of intervention, the French Federation sending covert support to the RSI in the form of advisors and supplies, the RSI spanning the Peninsula and Sicily with Sardinia confined to the eponymous island, the RSI co-founding the Third Internationale with Syndicalist France, Italian revanchist nationalism caused by the indefinite Austro-Hungarian occupation of Veneto, the rival government in Sardinia and President Nicola Bombacci fanning the flames, the RSI as the birthplace of Totalism (including Fascism), the rise of Benito Mussolini as President and Chief of the Italian Socialist Republic under an FAR/PSI coalition, elections in the Kingdom of Italy (Sardinia) with four different paths depending on the results and military response (PPI, PDSI, ANI and PLI), five major paths/factions for the RSI depending on Mussolini's fate (Fascists, Maximalists, Communists, Anarchists and Unionists), the Second Weltkrieg resulting in an Italian offensive against the Austrians and/or Germans on the Veneto and a Sardinian-National French campaign into the Italian mainland bolstered by the southern Royalist partisan insurgency, and Italy getting Veneto and Sardinia back under the Republicans or Royalists.

Overall, my vision is mostly set and I might write up an extensive lore doc someday.

An Analysis of German Military Operations or Why the German Spring Offensive Would Not Occur in KR

Disclaimer: This is not an attack on the KR dev team, as their work for the mod is simply masterful. This is simply a critique of certain decisions to have OTL events occur here, even if the logical butterflies would prevent them from ever happening in KR.

Kaiserreich 2.0 or New Kaiserreich has been undergoing a series of major reworks to the lore and overall setup since the mod entered the Hearts of Iron IV era in 2016. These reworks are aimed at improving the plausibility and believability of the scenario to draw upon real-world history with China, Germany and Russia as the most prominent examples. There are also additional reworks coming as well with the Third Internationale (France and Britain), Austria-Hungary, Spain, Mexico, Finland and others in varying stages of development. There are other aspects of KR that need major reworks at some point, such as Italy and German East Asia, but overall things look good. The KR team is very much professional, on par with a game studio, and they know how to deliver on the reworks, as shown with China, Germany, and Russia. Germany itself was a worthy rework that delivered the historical depth, story, and parts needed for its main protagonist nation, and the devs did a good job, all things considered.

However, there is one glaring issue that affects the Germany rework and realistically shouldn't even occur: The Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht still happening like in OTL. This is an aspect of KR that makes no real sense when you look at the reasons/factors behind why Germany started a risky, large-scale "all-or-nothing" offensive in the spring of 1918. The Germany devs (Lehmanno and Augenis) justify this as Germany thinking the offensive would more than end the war, that time is running against them due to the British naval blockade and the domestic situation is terrible and thus the Germans still being on the clock. However, none of these explanations really address the actual reasons why Germany launched the Kaiserschlacht in spring 1918 in the first place And before any of you go, "Well, KR isn't meant to be 100% realistic," KR is a mod grounded in actual history, and the history of OTL's World War I still applies to the mod as well, including the factors behind the decision to launch a last roll of the dice in spring 1918. So without further ado, here is an analysis of why Germany started the Spring Offensive in OTL and why it wouldn't realistically occur in KR.

The OTL Context

So let's go back into November 1917 with an Oberst Heerleitsung (OHL) meeting involving the likes of General Erich Von Ludendorff, Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenburg and others formulating the next big plans for Germany to decisively break the near-stalemate on the Western Front and win the war in time. This meeting is amidst other events around this time such as the Russian Revolution plunging Russia into full-scale civil war, the Nivelle offensive ending in failure with mutinies affecting nearly half of France's combat units, Bulgaria pinning down Entente forces at Macedonia after Doiran, Austria-Hungary inflicted Italy's defeat at Caporetto after the latter's initial successes at the Isonzo, the British suffering from heavy losses at Passchendaele and only recently beginning to penetrate through Ottoman territory after initial defeats. The one major development this year was America joining the Entente to oppose the Central Powers after Germany restarted unrestricted submarine warfare in February and sent the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico and Japan to join their side. America's membership in the Entente as an "Associated Power" is a major development because it not only had the fourth-largest population in the world but also contributes to the war in other ways such as providing the convoy ships and mining barrages needed to counter the German U-boat threat, provide $17-24 billion in "Liberty Loans" to stabilize Entente credit (especially the nearly-bankrupt Britain), providing more goods and munitions, boost the morale of it's war-exhausted allies and tighten the British naval blockade even further by forcing Germany's neutral partners (Netherlands and Scandinavian nations) to stop normal trade and slowly suffocate the Germans into surrender.

American entry into the war is a particularly important factor when it came to German war plans for 1918, as Germany only has a limited window of time to win the war on the Western Front before the Americans would arrive in large numbers to turn the tide and coordinate subsequent Allied counter-offensives with late February or March as the only months to launch a big "all or nothing" campaign. Ludendorff himself specifically mentions these details in a memorandum in the November 1917 OHL meeting: "Our general situation requires that we should strike at the earliest moment, if possible at the end of February or beginning of March, before the Americans can throw strong forces into the scale." In addition, Germany was transferring its most experienced units to the Western Front with the collapse of Russia and thus another major front to focus on, which was another reason for launching the Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht. But as noted by historians, the Spring Offensive was launched primarily because of the impending arrival of American troops on the Western Front to turn the tide of the war itself. And ironically, the Spring Offensive would only accelerate the arrival of the Americans and their key role in battles like Cantigny, Belleau Wood, the Marne, Saint Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne, all of which brought about the downfall of the Central Powers and the victory of the Entente in general. Alongside the naval support, finances and morale boosts, America was strategically important to the Entente because it could provide a reliable source of manpower to overcome initial German numerical and rifle superiority, replenish Entente losses, plug the gaps and hold vulnerable lines, relieve the war-weary, exhausted armies and organize counter-offensives in ways the Central Powers could not. The Germans fully understood that the Spring Offensive hinged on winning the war before the Americans arrived, which of course failed.

But in KR? None of the above stuff ever occurred, with Germany sticking to prize law submarine warfare in accordance with international regulations since October 1916, the United States ultimately remaining neutral in World War I without any real justification to join the Entente, and the Entente still reeling from its setbacks and further issues. And these factors would affect German military planning in 1918...

How the Lack of American Presence on the Western Front Changes KR

When looking at the Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht and its immediate causes and other elements, it becomes clear that the offensive as we know it would be butterflied out of existence in KR, or rather, the Kaiserschlacht would not happen in the spring. Not only do the Germans not have to deal with the impending arrival of American soldiers to turn the tide, but they also don't feel the same desperation or sense that they are on the clock. And the domestic situation would not fully convince the Germans to launch the Kaiserschlacht in the spring, as it would be a bit different and did not fully convince them to do it in OTL either. Plus, the lack of American intervention would change the war in multiple ways and open up a can of worms for the Entente: Manpower shortages in Britain and France preventing major offensives, Britain reaching bankruptcy forcing them to abandon the gold standard and thus reducing its ability to pay for American war material, the German U-boats still remaining a threat to Allied shipping without the convoy system even under prize law rules, the loss of Russia as a major heavyweight to oppose the Central Powers, Italy struggling after Caporetto and the Entente armies and governments being war-weavy and exhausted alongside the Central Powers.

To the devs' credit, they are right to note that the Entente would not be able to launch the Spring Offensive themselves, since they lacked the manpower to do so and were in a defensive posture. But as for arguments regarding the domestic situation and blockade, that's something to address when looking at the devs' explanations which don't really hold up either:

  • "OTL, the Germans were more than convinced that their spring offensive would end the war - and in KRTL, without the US, they would be even more so, so no reason to wait until 1919 with that" - That was only because the Germans believed they could end the war before the Americans arrived in full force, they chose March as their date for their "all or nothing" offensive as discussed earlier. The lack of US means the central justification for launching the Kaiserschlacht wouldn't exist and the Germans have not much of a reason to launch it so soon either.
  • "in a world without USMW (at least not in spring 1918, wink) the Germans can’t just randomly wait a year longer to launch their offensive. The time is running against them due to the British blockade!" - This also misses another aspect of the domestic situation and the British blockade. While the domestic situation will be rough and the British blockade won't go away, there are two main aspects to consider here: (1) The success of prize law submarine warfare around this time and (2) The neutral markets for essential goods and resources to Germany. As even lehmanno and others have noted, prize law submarine warfare was more successful than unrestricted submarine warfare in terms of sinkings and adherence to international law and Wilson's "freedom of the seas" on top of not bringing America to join the Entente and it would stay as such until November 1918 where it's eventual stagnation and decline would lead Germany to restart unrestricted submarine warfare for the rest of the Weltkrieg. Within the timeframe of KR Germany in spring 1918, prize law submarine warfare is still ongoing and doing decently well at this point in the war and the Germans simply do not have the central justification to do the offensive either. Likewise, the British blockade would not go away, but it wouldn't be tightened even further because the United States is not there to pressure the Netherlands and Scandinavian nations to stop normal trade with Germany, alongside no USMW in 1917 to alienate the neutral markets or the success of the convoy system and North Sea Mining Barrage with American help. There's also the fact that Germany's calorie consumption actually went up in 1918 compared to 1917, and it did actually stabilize around pre-war levels, with the exception of the Turnip Winter of 1916-17 and summer 1918 based on a study of local food surveys. In that regard, the British blockade is still there but less airtight, and Germany still has neutral markets to get essential goods, coupled with no American intervention.

With the historical context and the different strategic situation in KR considered, it's highly unlikely the Spring Offensive would even be launched under the same circumstances and manner as OTL without the threat of American intervention turning the tide of the war. And this has major consequences for the war as well.

That is not to say that the Germans would be entirely idle and stick to a defensive strategy for 1918 either; After all, the Germans have already won a big campaign against Russia on the Eastern Front and are transferring troops elsewhere, mostly to the Western Front. With such a numerical and rifle strength superiority, the Germans sooner or later are going to launch a major offensive in the West. But without the impending arrival of the Americans, Germany does not have the central justification to launch the Kaiserschlacht in the spring. On the contrary, a major offensive in the summer is possible given the Germans' recent success in the East and numerical and rifle superiority in the West. Ideally, the Germans would use their extra months of preparation to launch a better-planned offensive to take Amiens and/or Compiegne to split the Entente forces and secure a peace deal/armistice by 1918, but this would be too early and would disrupt KR lore. So in the very unlikely event that the devs do a facelift of Germany lore and have the major offensive begin in summer June 1918 with German forces being able to penetrate deep into Entente lines, push back enemy forces and capture the town of Compiegne to cause panic amongst the Entente even if it doesn't full-on split the forces per se and later there is a failed Entente counter-offensive in the fall 1918 to push back the Germans which doesn't succeed and then a major German offensive is launched to end the war by January 1919 which becomes a major success that contributes to the end of the war that year alongside other favorable developments in other theatres of the war. As for America, I agree with the devs' explanations of why they remain neutral in World War I, with the political divisions within the population, though I'd add that they do not go to war because of the deadly American Flu (OTL's Spanish Flu) around this time and do not want to risk spreading the disease any further, even with Germany restarting unrestricted submarine warfare in November 1918.

But these were my thoughts on the worldbuilding decisions for KR.

What If Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation) Dubbed NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt?

Based on this post: What If Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation) Dubbed NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt? (Anime Dubs)

Introduction

As you know, Studio Gainax/Studio Trigger's Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is a famously raunchy, crude, vulgar and blasphemous series known for having a profane English dub filled with so many swears from most of its characters, courtesy of the Texas-based Funimation Entertainment (now Crunchyroll) in 2012 with a well-established cast comprised of Jamie Marchi as Panty Anarchy, Monica Rial as Stocking Anarchy, Christopher Sabat as Garterbelt, Colleen Clinkenbeard as Scanty Daemon, Cherami Leigh as Kneesocks Daemon, Joel McDonald as Briefers "Brief" Rock and Christopher Ayres as Corset, among others. This dub leaned heavily into its vulgar American parody identity, turning the series into a cult classic overseas with a healthy fanbase wanting more P&SG content, even as the series took a 15-year hiatus due to rights issues and the establishment of Studio Trigger. Since the series would inevitably get a second season at some point, it was expected that Funimation/Crunchyroll would do the dub, given their work on the acclaimed first season dub and the fact that they had already done Trigger's Space Patrol Luluco. However, whereas the original Japanese cast got nearly everyone to reprise their roles, Funimation, or rather Crunchyroll, would not get the rights to the dub of NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, but rather Amazon Prime Video, of all companies, chose to enlist the Burbank-based Pixelogic Media to do an entire recast and handle the series going forward comprised of Courtney Lin (Panty), Cristina Vee (Stocking), Daniel Walton (Garterbelt), Cat Protano (Scanty), Ryan Bartley (Kneesocks), Kieran Walton (Brief) and Keith Silverstein as Corset, with the new characters having LA area-based voice actors as well. If one was to guess as to why Amazon and not Crunchyroll got the rights to dub Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, it perhaps has to do with factors such as Amazon's greater infrastructure over Crunchyroll, the different Production Committee for Studio Trigger and the executives being sufficiently interested in the series. All of this meant that Amazon got the rights to the series before Crunchyroll could even bid for it or they tried but failed.

Needless to say, the recast made many fans unhappy with the decision, as many identified with the Funimation cast and the series in general and couldn't imagine anyone else voicing Panty, Stocking, Garterbelt, etc. Others were at least fine or willing to tolerate the new cast and give them the benefit of the doubt. In any case, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt became tied up with Amazon and unless things change, you can expect it to stay as such.

The What If?

But what if things were different? What if Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation) got the rights to NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and got the chance to continue the series under their watch? That means almost the entire cast reprises their roles and Funimation-specific actors voice the new characters with greater vocal continuity from the first season.

For this scenario to occur, we need Amazon to have no interest in Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and not care about the series whatsoever. Given that PS&G is a niche cult classic with a 15-year-long gap between the two seasons and is not an anime megafranchise either, it's plausible that Amazon simply does not develop enough interest for the series and focuses on other high-profile anime titles for their rapidly expanding catalog instead, leaving Crunchyroll to make a successful bid for the comedy cult classic they popularized and simulcast the series worldwide in multiple languages (similar to what Amazon did).

With Crunchyroll now dubbing NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, they use their existing connections to the first season to promote the new season, capitalize on nostalgia for older fans, and generate hype for new fans as well. And Jamie Marchi is brought on board to write the scripts for the second season to adapt the series to Gen Z, social media and new pop culture references, using her experience from the first season. NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is released to a positive reception and generates more attention and revenue for Crunchyroll alongside their other high-profile titles such as Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family.

As for the what if Crunchyroll dub cast of NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, here is what it would look like:

The Originals

  • Jamie Marchi as Panty Anarchy
  • Monica Rial as Stocking Anarchy
  • Bill Butts as Garterbelt - Since Christopher Sabat doesn't want to voice non-white characters anymore, the black Bill Butts gets the opportunity to voice Garterbelt himself using the same voice as Slidin' Go from My Hero Academia.
  • Joel McDonald as Briefers "Brief" Rock
  • Ian Sinclair as Chuck
  • Colleen Clinkenbeard as Scanty Daemon
  • Cherami Leigh as Kneesocks Daemon
  • Christopher Bevins as Fastener
  • Keith Silverstein as Corset - Same as the actual Pixelogic Media dub since Ayres is dead and Silverstein has worked for Funimation before.

The New Characters

  • Anariris Quinones as Gunsmith Bitch - Quinones brings out an excited, battle-heavy swagger to the gun-wielding Gunsmith Bitch, reminiscent of her role as MHA's Mirko.
  • Ricco Fajardo as Polyester Newgen - The arrogant, cool guy angel is voiced by Funimation's Fajardo with a voice befitting of a character of such a background.
  • Zeno Robinson as Polytherune Newgen - The other half of the Newgen brothers is voiced by a black voice actor specifically Robinson, similar to how the Pixelogic Media dub had the black Corey Wilder voice him.
  • Mark Stoddard as God/Liniere - A Funimation voice acting veteran, Stoddard is suited to voice the big guy in Heaven.
  • Morgan Laure/Morgan Garrett as Silk - Laure knows how to voice warm, motherly characters like MHA's Rei Todoroki and the same applies here to Silk.
  • Patrick Seitz as Ramie - Seitz is the master of villains and heroes, and he is perfect to voice a duplicitous usurper like Ramie and to also add to the MHA connection (Endeavor) with both God (Dr. Garaki) and Silk (Rei).
  • Brina Palencia as Junior - Palencia is good at voicing young boy characters and this extends to Panty and Brief's son Junior.
  • Alexis Tipton as Bastard - The seemingly mysterious demon and companion of Junior is voiced by the talented Tipton.

From all this, the what if Crunchyroll dub of NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt becomes a true successor to Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and on par with the original Japanese version.

What If Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation) Dubbed NEW Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt?

What If NIS America and Bang Zoom Entertainment Dubbed the Danganronpa Anime Adaptations?

Introduction

So Danganronpa 2x2 will be coming next year with everyone reprising their roles and there's much to discuss about Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa. As we all know, the Danganronpa franchise has two anime adaptations made by Lerche: Danganronpa: The Animation (based on Trigger Happy Havoc) and Danganronpa 3 (a finale-sequel). Given how popular the games were, it should come as no surprise that they would get anime adaptations. The adaptations saw the original Japanese cast of both reprise their roles, including Megumi Ogata as Makoto Naegi and Yoko Hikasa as Kyoko Kirigiri, alongside newcomers such as Inori Minase as Ruruka Ando and Junichi Suwabe as Juzo Sakakura. The English dubs, however, were a much different story: Since 2013, the games are dubbed by the Los Angeles-based NIS America (a subsidiary of Nippon Ichi Software) in cooperation with Bang Zoom Entertainment and the anime adaptations are dubbed by the Texas-based Funimation and Crunchyroll. Of course, this has to do with three major factors: the selection process for anime adaptations and games being entirely different with Spike Chunsoft not entirely in control, Funimation and Crunchyroll's economic, streaming, and studio infrastructure dwarfing Bang Zoom/NIS America, and Funimation being a licensor of anime instead of being a work-for-hire subcontractor studio, unlike Bang Zoom. Additionally, Funimation and Crunchyroll probably developed just enough interest in Danganronpa to secure the licenses for the anime adaptations as part of their streaming portfolio before anyone else could. All of these factors are why the cast of Danganronpa: The Animation is entirely different (except Bryce Papenbrook as Makoto) and why the Goodbye Despair/2x2 characters have some actors reprising their roles and some recast alongside the new characters in Danganronpa 3 being almost comprised of Funimation-exclusive actors (most notably Ricco Fajardo as Kyosuke Munakata) and the use of "Super High School Level" and "Hope's Peak High School" as opposed to "Ultimate" and "Hope's Peak Academy."

Let's just say that the Bang Zoom/Funimation dub divide caused a split amongst the Danganronpa fanbase when it came to Danganronpa: The Animation as the dub performances had an off-brand rip-off feel that didn't really align with the games with some (https://www.reddit.com/r/Animedubs/comments/i8add2/comment/g17qg76/) even criticizing the localization and others just being fine with it (https://www.reddit.com/r/Animedubs/comments/i8add2/comment/g18c8fm/). But truthfully, I and others believe that Funimation has absolutely no business in dubbing any part of the Danganronpa franchise as they did not play a role in the localization of the franchise in America and overseas like NIS America and Bang Zoom nor did they help to popularize it in online circles like Something Awful and the Project Zetsubou fan dub. And the actual dub for Danganronpa: The Animation came off as a bargain-bin knockoff of a much superior dub for the games after release, with performances that were, at best, pale imitations of their game counterparts (Jessie Josh Grelle vs Jason Wishnov as Byakuya Togami, Caitlin Glass vs Erika Harlacher as Kyoko Kirigiri and Felicia Angrelle vs Cassandra Lee Morris as Aoi Asahina) and, at worst, lazy half-assed attempts that lacked the charm, spirit, and performance of the game actors with Christopher Sabat's forced tough guy schtick as Mondo Owada, Greg Ayres impersonating Brian Beacock as Monokuma, Tyson Rinehart's and Christopher Bevins' respective impersonations of Lucien Dodge as Hifumi Yamada and Kaiji Tang as Yasuhiro Hagakure, and Jamie Marchi's annoying "Evil Panty Anarchy" valley girl routine as Junko Enoshima being the worst offenders. Rachael Robinson's Sakura Ogami, compared to Jessica Gee-George, is about the one good performance that is on par with the original. The Danganronpa 3 dub performances for certain Goodbye Despair recast characters are alright, but not that good, and the new characters by Funimation-exclusive are fine enough. But still, the Funimation dub for Danganronpa was not something many wanted or asked for, and it couldn't really surpass the legendary dub by NIS America/Bang Zoom, which could also apply to the anime adaptations as well given Bang Zoom's illustrious history and NIS America actually dubbing a couple of noteworthy anime like Toradora and Love-Live!. In any case, English-language fans of the Danganronpa franchise were left with two distinct dubs that would leave their mark for better or worse.

The What If?

But what if things had gone differently for the Danganronpa franchise? What if NIS America and Bang Zoom Entertainment acquired the license to dub Danganronpa: The Animation and Danganronpa 3 (here known as Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy)? That means everyone from the games reprises their roles in the anime adaptations; Funimation and Crunchyroll have zero involvement with Danganronpa; And no Funimation-exclusive actors in any roles whatsoever (not counting bicoastal actors).

The best way for this scenario to happen is in the slate of title acquisitions from Funimation and Crunchyroll and overall interest in 2013. You see, Funimation and Crunchyroll were in the process of getting a lot of different anime titles for dubbing, streaming, and/or distributing on top of Funimation expanding its in-house studio infrastructure. The list of title acquisitions by Funimation and Crunchyroll was quite significant, such as: Attack on Titan, Date A Live, The Devil is a Part-Timer!, Free!, A Certain Scientific Railgun S, Rebuild of Evangelion, Lupin III, Wolf Children, Senran Kagura, Blood-C, Hyperdimension Neptunia (another NIS America-dubbed game), Code Geass, Brothers Conflict, Witch Hunter Robin, Angel Links, My-HiME/My Otome, Minaki-ke, Hal, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, AKIRA, The Visions of Escaflowne, etc. That's quite a number of significant titles. There's also the fact that Danganronpa hadn't even come out yet in 2013 and wouldn't be released stateside until next year, so it was a bit niche and untested as well. Given those factors, it's plausible that the executives at Funimation and Crunchyroll are simply too focused on securing the rights to these prominent, established titles for their streaming portfolio and never really develop any interest in Danganronpa as a whole. Thus, the licenses for Danganronpa: The Animation and Danganronpa 3 end up with the people in charge at NIS America and Bang Zoom later on, after they make a significant bid. On that note, NIS America getting the Danganronpa anime adaptations means they would not shut down their anime operations branch but instead continue and expand it by holding onto the license to Love-Live! and dubbing some of their older titles like Kimi no Todake, Anohana and Wagnaria alongside further acquisitions of newer titles over the years, but that's a different story.

So NIS America is dubbing not only the Danganronpa games but also the anime adaptations starting in 2013 in cooperation with Bang Zoom. As expected, NIS America promotes corporate synergy between the games and the anime adaptations with merchandise, DVD box-sets, streaming deals and other promotional materials. The addition of Danganronpa to NIS America's burgeoning anime dubbing operations is a good business opportunity that will generate revenue and attention. Everything goes well for Danganronpa: The Animation with a well-produced dub and Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy is a success as well. The Danganronpa franchise is synonymous solely with NIS America and Bang Zoom.

But as for the what if hypothetical NIS America/Bang Zoom dub of the Danganronpa anime adaptations, here is what they would be like:

Danganronpa: The Animation (2013/2015)

Just like the original Japanese version, the hypothetical dub has everyone from Trigger Happy Havoc reprising their roles as their characters in the anime adaptation, such as:

  • Bryce Papenbrook as Makoto Naegi
  • Erika Harlacher as Kyoko Kirigiri
  • Jason Wishnov as Byakuya Togami
  • Cassandra Lee Morris as Aoi Asahina
  • Kaiji Tang as Yasuhiro Hagakure
  • Amanda Celine Miller as Toko Fukawa, Junko Enoshima and Mukuro Ikusaba
  • Erin Fitzgerald as Genocide Jack and Junko Enoshima's select personalities
  • Brian Beacock as Monokuma
  • Dorothy Elias-Fahn as Sayaka Maizono, Chihiro Fujisaki and Alter Ego
  • Grant George as Leon Kuwata
  • Keith Silverstein as Mondo Owada, Daiya Owada and Jin Kirigiri
  • Sean Chiplock as Kiyotaka Ishimaru
  • Lucien Dodge as Hifumi Yamada
  • Marieve Herington as Taeko Yasuhiro/Celestia Ludenberg

The obvious difference here is that the hypothetical NIS America/Bang Zoom dub would have stronger connections to the games and there would be no forced "Evil Panty Anarchy" valley girl routine for Junko or "tough guy" schtick for Mondo Owada. So yeah, this version of the dub resembles it's original Japanese version.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy (2016)

So this is where things get more interesting. As an anime finale-sequel split into three parts (Despair Arc, Hope Arc, Future Arc), it means not only the return of characters from Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair but also the introduction of a new cast.

As expected, the game actors reprise their roles as the DR1 and DR2 characters. For DR2, they include:

  • Johnny Yong Bosch as Hajime Hinata/Izuru Kamakura (Same as the actual dub)
  • Christine Marie Cabanos as Chiaki Nanami (Same as the actual dub)
  • Wendee Lee as Akane Owari
  • Derek Stephen Prince as Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
  • Chris Tergliaferra as Gundham Tanaka
  • Kira Buckland as Hiyoko Saionji (Same as the actual dub)
  • Julie Ann Taylor as Ibuki Mioda
  • Kyle Hebert as Kazuichi Soda (Same as the actual dub)
  • Carrie Keranen as Mahiru Koizumi (Same as the actual dub)
  • Stephanie Sheh as Mikan Tsumiki (Same as the actual dub)
  • Bryce Papenbrook as Nagito Komaeda (Same as the actual dub)
  • Patrick Seitz as Nekomaru Nidai (Same as the actual dub)
  • Janice Kawaye as Peko Pekoyama
  • Jason Wishnov as the Ultimate Impostor
  • Natalie Hoover as Sonia Nevermind (Same as the actual dub)
  • Todd Haberkorn as Teruteru Hanamura (Same as the actual dub)
  • Rebecca Forstadt as Usami/Monomi

Then, we get into the new characters of the Despair, Hope and Future Arcs. Since they are a colorful cast of characters, that means finding the appropriate actors, drawing upon the Los Angeles-based pool of talent around 2016. This is who I believe would be the voice actors for the new characters in the NIS America/Bang Zoom dub:

  • Kyle McCarley as Kyosuke Munakata (Former Ultimate Student Council President) - Given that he was a rising star in the LA anime dubbing scene who started his career in 2015, McCarley would have been cast in such a big role and his ability to play both heroes and villains with his performance as Munakata being a prototype version of Ryo Asuka/Satan from Devilman Crybaby and Simon Laurent from Infinity Train when he later voices those characters down the line.
  • Richard Epcar as Kazuo Tengan (Chairman of Future Foundation) - Kazuo isn't exactly a well-written character even as an antagonist but regardless Epcar is a voice acting veteran whose talents are needed for a secret mastermind behind the Final Killing Game and his performance as Gentarou Hongou from Spike Chunsoft's Zero Escape provides the perfect vocal template.
  • Laura Post as Chisa Yukizome (Former Ultimate Housekeeper) - She can play both heroes and villains and do high-pitched or deep-voiced women as her performances as Sumire Yoshizawa from Persona 5 and Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill can attest, so all of this would apply well to a conflicted character like Yukizome, drawing upon Post's other performances.
  • Liam O'Brien as Koichi Kizakura (Ultimate Talent Scout) - Since Tang would be reprising his role as Yasuhiro, he would not voice Koichi but instead another deep-voiced voice actor would do this role and it would be an LA anime dubbing veteran like O'Brien using his role as Orlando Haddick from Catherine as an example given his similar appearances and style, coupled with him appearing in Zero Escape as Dio.
  • Zach Aguilar as Ryota Mitarai (Former Ultimate Animator) - Aguilar was a fresh face in anime dubbing circa 2016, and his youthful appearance and voice are best suited to a character as broken but well-meaning and timid as Mitarai, with Koichi Hirose from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as the vocal model.
  • Ray Chase as Juzo Sakakura (Former Ultimate Boxer) - Chase is good at deep-voiced tough guys such as Heishiro Mitsurugi from Soulcalibur and Bruno Bucciarati from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and the same applies here to Sakakura, using Mitsurugi as the vocal template.
  • Max Mittelman as Sonosuke Izayoi (Former Ultimate Blacksmith) - Mittelman is new talent and has voiced tough and brash characters in anime or Japanese video games before and Izayoi is both of those things, so expect Ryuji Sakamoto from Persona 5 to give an idea of what this version of Izayoi would sound look like.
  • Brianna Knickerbocker as Ruruka Ando (Former Ultimate Confectionist) - Similar to McCarley, Knickerbocker was a rising star in the LA dubbing scene since 2015 and a character with a cutesy appearance, voice and Talent like Ruruka would fit the type of characters she usually voices but with a much darker twist as she's a killer who ends up murdering her love interest Izayoi during the Final Killing Game, like a more villainous version of Flammie Speeddraw from Rokka of the Seven Braves and Chisaki Hiradira from A Lull in the Sea (an actual NIS America-dubbed anime).
  • Erin Fitzgerald and Amanda Celine Miller/Bennett Abara (young) as Seiko Kimura (Former Ultimate Pharmacist) - The only one of the Former Ultimates with the same voice actors as the Funimation anime dub since both Fitzgerald and Miller have voiced multiple Danganronpa characters and thus they would be kept in this specific role as Seiko.
  • Abby Trott as Daisaku Bandai (Former Ultimate Farmer) - This Afro tough guy with a surprisingly girly voice would have a voice actor who does high-pitched girls and Trott is the perfect candidate with Demon Slayer's Nezuko Kamado as the vocal template.
  • Jamieson Price as The Great Gozu (Former Ultimate Wrestler) - Price is the master of deep-voiced, powerful and imposing characters, so he would be right at home with the Great Gozu who embodies the same archetype as those characters and the fact that Price appeared in Zero Escape as old Sigma Klim.
  • Rebecca Forstadt as Miaya Gekkogahara (Former Ultimate Therapist) - Since both Monomi and Miaya share a voice actor, Forstadt would voice the two characters and because the real Miaya died a while ago and the Miaya we see in the anime is a robot controlled by Monaca Towa (Cristina Valenzuela/Cristina Vee).

And for the other characters of note that appear in either the Despair, Hope and/or Future Arcs:

  • Lauren Landa as Komaru Naegi - Yes, Komaru is still recast here because her game voice actor Cherami Leigh was getting married and thus unavailable to reprise her role at the time, so she will be replaced with another voice actor and it would be Lauren Landa (Leigh's Sailor Moon contemporary) with her role as Leia Rolando from Tales of Xillia to serve as a close vocal match.
  • Mela Lee as Natsumi Kuzuryu - Since Prince is a much older voice actor than Dismuke and reprises his role as Fuyuhiko in this scenario, this means a voice actress whose age is closer to Prince himself and Mela would fit the role of the arrogant but insecure Natsumi, with her performance being similar to her role as Ishtar in Fate/Grand Order.
  • Michelle Ruff as Sato - I chose Ruff for the role of Sato not only because Luci Christian's performance as Sato sounds similar to her typical vocal range, but also because Ruff herself has voiced multiple characters in Danganronpa, much like Fitzgerald and Miller.
  • The Student Council Members (excluding Daiki Kubo and Shoji Yuto) - Given that the Funimation anime dub used established voice actors for the Student Council Members in the First Killing Game, the same thing would happen with the what if NIS America/Bang Zoom dub. The specific voice actors would include: Xanthe Huynh as Aiko Umesawa (Alluka Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter; since Morris is voicing Aoi), Christian LaMonte as Asukasei Kino (same as the Funimation dub due to being a bicoastal actor), Chris Cason as Soshun Murasame (same as the Funimation dub like LaMonte), Karen Strassman as Karen Kisaragi (Phi from Zero Escape), Sarah Anne Williams as Kiriko Nishizawa (Nonon Jakuzure from Kill la Kill), Reba Buhr as Tsubasa Kamii (Milo from Revisions), Ryan Bartley as Kotomi Ibuka (Ram from Re/Zero), Erik Scott Kimrer as Ryota Simeta (Gowther from Seven Deadly Sins), Vic Mignogna as Sosuke Ichino (same as the actual dub due to Mignogna's ties to Bang Zoom), Anne Yatco as Suzuko Kashiwagi (Nobara Kugisaki from Jujutsu Kaisen), Taliesin Jaffe as Taro Kurosaki (same as the actual dub) and Jalen K. Cassell as Tomohiko Goryoku (Junya Kaneshiro from Persona 5)

From all this, the NIS America/Bang Zoom dub of the Danganronpa anime adaptations would transform the franchise's English-language market presence into a unified, multimedia collective with a single, specific cast on par with the original Japanese-language version.

The Two Italies: A Kaiserreich Italy Rework (Miscelleanous)

The China-Taiwan conflict was something I already had in mind when it came to writing the KR Italy rework proposal as it shares the major civil war, successful socialist revolution, geography, shared founding figure (Giuseppe Garibaldi/Sun Yat-sen) and evanchist nationalism aspects.

Incidentally, not long after I published the proposal, r/Uytye has been working on an KR Italy rework submod titled Italia Reborn which shares a number of similarities to my proposal but with distinct differences such as Austrian intervention in the Italian Civil War, the Austrian-backed Italian Republic and Sardinia co-existing alongside the Italian Socialist Republic, Gabriele D'Annunzio joining forces with revolutionary socialists and Mussolini in a ruling coalition with trade unions. I've taken note of the mod and it has inspired me to write down an Italy rework doc at some point. But still, I am sticking to my vision as much as I can. So thanks for the support and feedback.

Update on the Status of The Fire Rises: Wrath of God

So it's been a while since the latest teaser for the Army of God from The Fire Rises: Wrath of God was published, courtesy of yours truly. There is certainly anticipation for the project as a submod that adds a Christian theocracy faction/path for America during the Second American Civil War (specifically the Army of God), and we've been working our best to complete it since its official announcement in 2025. To note, the essential premise and aspects of the submod still exist, with some alterations based on feedback from other users and the dev team. We've already completed much of the GFX for the starting focus tree, the bridge focus tree, the military focus tree, the economic focus tree, the New Apostles focus tree and the Pilgrims focus tree, as well as coding in the starting and bridge focus trees themselves. So we've made a decent amount of progress.

But right now, we're facing a slowdown among devs, as some are not particularly active at the moment, partly due to real-life matters. We are almost close to completing the Redeemers focus tree though my GFX guy Reverse is still absent for the time being. This is also somewhat of a concern, as having a slowdown from too many devs can cripple a submod's project and prevent it from reaching full-scale completion. We very much need not only more active devs but also for those to stop being too tied down with other matters to get back to work and complete this submod. We've put a significant amount of effort into making Wrath of God come to fruition and we can't have too many devs be absent and do nothing for long periods of time. We need more devs actively engaged with the mod so that we can take more steps toward an official release. And given that the Army of God is a popularly requested faction for the Second American Civil War in The Fire Rises, we want the submod to be complete.

On a related note, here's a Discord link to the mod for those who want to apply and help out:

  • Multiple pantheons co-exist with one another on Earth, from Abrahamic to Mesopotamian.
  • Panty and Stocking are sent by Garterbelt to investigate the Nightmares
  • Corset, Scanty and Kneesocks are working with Thomas Mutton (Dumuzid), Catherine, Ishtar and Nergal to use the Nightmares to advance their own agenda and eliminate "unfaithful" men
  • The Nightmares are Ghosts created by the antagonists to go after Vincent and other men in Daten City

The Two Italies: A Kaisererich Italy Rework Proposal (Part 2)

Link to Part 1 here

Pre-War Setup

Italian Socialist Republic (RSI)

Like the pre-rework Socialist Republic of Italy, the Italian Socialist Republic is a revolutionary republic and founding member of the Third Internationale seeking to bring the entire Italian Peninsula under the red flag. Gameplay-wise, however, the RSI would play like a mix of its pre-rework counterpart and the reworked France and Britain in terms of its political paths, leaders and mechanics. This also extends to the RSI's military and economic strength: It has spent a couple of years modernizing it's military and economy thanks to the rearmament program and close ties to Syndicalist France and Britain, with the potential to rival Austria-Hungary under the right leadership.

More importantly, the starting situation has also been changed up here: Instead of the trade unions dominating under Giuseppe Giuletti, the Italian Socialist Republic is now dominated by a governing coalition comprised of the Fascio d'Azione Rivoluzionaria and the Italian Socialist Party led by Benito Mussolini. Its political factions are split among traditional parties, trade unions, and workers' councils, not too dissimilar to it's French and British counterparts. Mussolini himself plays a similar role for the RSI as Boris Savinkov for Russia or Kurt von Schleicher for Germany: the recently elected authoritarian leader whose fate plays a major role in the RSI's paths and gameplay. This is very important in selecting the RSI's system of governance and the fate of socialist democracy.

Speaking of political factions, the major factions for the RSI are:

  • Fascists (Fasci d'Azione Rivoluzionaria; Totalist) - A national syndicalist party founded and led by Benito Mussolini, the Fasci d'Azione Rivoluzionaria, or simply the Fascists, are a radical organization known for it's nationalistic, militaristic, anti-capitalist and anti-democratic ideology with an emphasis on a strongman leader, complete control over all institutions and pan-Italian unity across the Mediterranean, collectively labeled as an Italian "national socialism" built around a synthesis of class and nation. The Fascists are the leading political organization behind the ideology of Totalism through the Totalist Charter with strong connections to Britain's Maximists and France's Sorelians, sharing similar beliefs as the latter two and, in particular, serving as a political inspiration of sorts for the Maximists themselves. Notable members include Alcide de Ambris, Edmondo Rossoni, Flippo Corrodini and Michele Bianchi.
  • Maximalists (Italian Socialist Party; Syndicalist) - The leading political faction of the PSI, the Maximalists have represented the party's revolutionary core since the 1920 elections and the Italian Civil War. The Maximalists are socialists who seek revolution as a means of establishing a new society and the abolition of what they perceive as "bourgeois" ideas or culture taking heavy inspiration from the French model, with the party in charge of political institutions and the trade unions helping to run the economy and a heavy emphasis on traditional party politics. The faction is split between two groups in the overall execution of the socialist revolution and Italian nationalism: the Syndicalist-Maximalists led by former President Nicola Bombacci, who represent a total commitment to syndicalist principles and a more authoritarian form of government, and the True Maximalists led by Amadeo Bordiga, who represent a more internationalistic, vanguardist interpretation of Italian socialism inspired by Marxism with personal autonomy in economic matters independent of the government. Notable members from both groups include Antonio Graziadei, Luigi Polano, Ercole Bucco and Anselmo Marabini from the Syndicalist-Maximalists and Pietro Nenni, Angelica Balabanoff, Ugo Coccia and Rodolfo Morandi from the True Maximalists.
  • Ordinovists (Italian Socialist Party; Radical Socialist) - Led by Antonio Gramsci of L'Ordine Nuovo, the Ordinovists represent the council communist wing of the PSI and seek to combine traditional party politics with management by local workers' councils rather than unions, inspired by Marxist theory. The Ordinovistas believe that the SRI must become a nationwide socialist factory, with every loyal citizen an essential producer, and that cultural hegemony must be attained through control of institutions, as well as the party working more closely with the workers' councils for the cause of Italian socialism. Notable members include Angelo Tasca, Palmiro Togliatti and Umberto Terracini.
  • Anarchists and Unionists (Italian Syndicalist Union/Confederation of General Labor; Syndicalist) - The main factions of the Italian Syndicalist Union, the Anarchists led by Alberto Meschi and the Unionists led by Giuseppe di Vittorio, represent the two opposing currents within the organization. The Anarchists are anarcho-syndicalists influenced by the teachings of the late Errico Malatesta and want to reorganize the RSI as a decentralized workers' confederation led entirely by syndicates, acting in opposition to traditional party politics and centralization. The Unionists comprise labour activists and organizers who want the USI, the CGL, and its associated organizations to adhere more closely to the traditional trade union model with some form of centralization to help run the country under syndicalist principles. Notable members include Armando Borghi, Ettore Bonometti and Camillo Berneri for the Anarchists and Oreste Lizzadri, Angelo Faggi and Emilio Caneveri for the Unionists.
  • Actionists (Action Party; Radical Socialist): A small but vocal socialist party in the Chamber of Labour led by Carlo and Nello Rosselli, the Action Party or the Actionists are an organization that advocates for a more humanistic, liberal form of Italian socialism. Like their contemporaries, they are firm believers of the revolution and want to see it fully realized across Italy, albeit with a more democratic and pluralistic approach. Notable members include Emilio Lussu and Gaetano Salvemini. Unlike the other factions, however, the Actionists are not a playable path and cannot come to power compared to it's pre-rework counterpart due to being less influential than the radical syndicalists and socialists, but can nevertheless cooperate with other factions like the Anarchists for a common cause, similar to Britain's Vanguardists.

For gameplay mechanics, the RSI has a political mechanic that generates decisions to gain support, propaganda and stability depending on the faction in charge replacing Risorigemento, an economic mechanic to develop the national economy athrough various projects, a military mechanic for developing/training the Red Army and a foreign policy mechanic involving the RSI's support for France and Britain and socialist insurgencies around the world (Spain, America, Argentina, India, China), given it's key status as a founding member of the Third Internationale and desire to export syndicalism for strategic reasons.

At the start of 1936, President Benito Mussolini will move to solidify his grip over the Italian Socialist Republic by introducing a new Socialist Constitution to replace the 1924 Constitution. The Socialist Constitution or the Fascist Constitution will officially restructure the Presidency into a more centralized position, with all genuine political power now vested in the President himself, reform the Regional Council Exchanges into the technocratic National Technical Councils of Labour and greater state control over the Union Federations and workers' councils. The Fascist Constitution is intended to be the coup de grâce of Mussolini's four-year process of complete control, as it will ensure that the Fascists will reorganize the RSI to suit their whims and establish an authoritarian dictatorship. Mussolini promises the representatives of the Chamber of Labour that the new constitiution is intended to uphold stability and order and falsely reassures his colleagues that he will put a stop to radical Blackshirt violence and preserve socialist democracy. The Fascist Constitution is strongly supported by the FAR and the PSI's Maximalist-Syndicalists, who hold a majority in the People's Assembly, but is opposed by the PSI's Ordinovists and the USI's Anarchists, with the True Maximalists, Unionists and workers' councils on the fence regarding their autonomy under Mussolini.

From there, the player will take a focus to begin enacting the Fascist Constitution and complete the other focuses. However, the success of Mussolini's government and the Fascist Constitution depends on whether the player has achieved enough political support (6 or more) in the Chamber of Labour and this leads to two main outcomes for the Socialist Republic of Italy:

- Fascist Constitution Approved: The Fascist Revolution (Mussolini): The default path should the player achieve 6 or more Political Stability, it involves Benito Mussolini consolidating power over much of Italy by securing a majority of votes to pass the Fascist Constitution in the Chamber of Labour and subsequently reorganizing the Italian Socialist Republic into a one-party Totalist dictatorship. Mussolini will dissolve the position of Chief and the Council of Ministers to replace both with a single Presidency, with Mussolini himself as President; change the RSI's flag and emblem to incorporate the fasces; and the FAR will become the Republican Fascist Party (PFR) with the PSI's Maximalist-Syndicalists reduced into a rump political partner. As one would expect, the Fascist-led Italian Socialist Republic will suppress opposition through the secret police and Blackshirts, establish the PFR as the only political party in charge, state-sanctioned control over the trade unions, the workers' councils being reorganized to include only PFR representatives and establish the Grand Council of Fascism and the National Assembly, all of which are aimed at creating a centralized totalitarian state where the Party, the Military and the Unions are one. It's focus tree is essentially a mix of pre-rework Fascist SRI's focus tree and the Savinkov Russia focus tree with focuses like forming the National Guard. Fascist national spirits will be generated to represent the dictatorship. Also, unlike in previous versions, Mussolini is the sole Fascist leader for the RSI and will continue to do so should he succeed in consolidating his regime.

- Fascist Constitution Rejected: Should the player have less than 6 Political Stability, Mussolini's power will diminish, and he will be overthrown in a military coup by elements of the Italian Red Army loyal to the opposition, resulting in him being placed under arrest and later executed for treason. A new provisional government in the Chamber of Labour will be established to oversee the democratic transition through a special election. There are four post-Mussolini paths for the Italian Socialist Republic, each with its own respective focus trees and national spirits, which are:

  • "The Italian Road to Socialism" (Gramsci): The council communist path if the player selects Antonio Gramsci as President and the Ordinovists take over the PSI. This path involves the party moving towards a council-based democracy and empowering the local workers' councils in the RSI's day-to-day governance. Likewise, Gramsci's Ordinovists will restructure the Republic into a giant socialist factory, where the loyal citizen is a producer for the state, and promote socialist cultural hegemony in Italy and Western Europe. Gramsci's path can be considered a more democratic path than Mussolini's, as it allows genuinely free elections and competition whilst still adhering to traditional party politics.
  • "A Fresh Start" (Nenni): The orthodox syndicalist path if the player selects Pietro Nenni as President with the PSI's True Maximalists returning to the party's pre-1933 politics modeled after Syndicalist France's Centrists to distance themselves from Mussolini. This path involves Nenni reorienting the PSI away from Mussolini's grasp and into an orthodox French-style syndicalist federation with free elections and genuine democracy. As a leading Maximalist theorist given leadership at Bordiga's behest, Nenni seeks to reinvigorate the party's commitment to international socialist revolution and to uphold democracy in line with their own distinct approach.
  • "A Truly Free Italy" (Meschi): The anarcho-syndicalist path if the player selects Alberto Meschi as President and the USI's Anarchists are in charge. This path has Meschi reform the Republic into the Italian Workers Confederation, a decentralized federation of free and sovereign communes, with committee-based collective political power-sharing between Meschi himself and the Council of the People. The USI will empower trade unions/syndicates and federations to lead the country with an emphasis on worker self-management, collective-based economics, committee democracy and mutual aid between syndicates. Think Spain's CNT-FAI and you get an idea of what to expect from Meschi's USI.
  • "The Worker's Destiny" (Di Vittorio): The trade union path if the player selects Giuseppe di Vittorio as President and the Unionists take control of the USI. This path has Di Vittorio bringing the USI closer to orthodox syndicalist principles and giving the unions greater control over the RSI. Furthermore, President Di Vittorio will keep some form of centralization intact for the Republic (including the Council of Ministers) and seek to consolidate power around the USI, the CGL and associated unions led by union bosses rather than the workers. As one might expect from a syndicalist-run society, Di Vittorio's USI will preserve a centrally planned economy alongside the utilization of existing institutions like the Chamber of Labour and union-centric democracy. Pretty much the trade unionist path for the RSI.

Regardless of who leads the Italian Socialist Republic, the ultimate goal is the triumph of Italian and Western socialism and the reclamation of Italian-speaking lands across Europe to avenge it's defeat when the Second Weltkrieg starts.

Sardinia (Kingdom of Italy)

Sardinia or the Kingdom of Italy is essentially a mix of base KR Sardinia and Italian Republic with the former's geographic position and Savoyard monarchy and the latter's politics and subpaths. Moreover, Sardinia is a full member of the Entente, as in older versions of the mod, because it is the Italian government-in-exile and represents the pre-revolutionary political order, similar to Canada and National France. In keeping up with the parallels, Sardinia is essentially the Taiwan to the RSI's China. It's also very much reliant on National France for it's economy and eventual military plan against the RSI, though it maintains a small but well-trained army and navy and a decent economy.

The starting situation is different from base KR Sardinia and the Italian Republic as Sardinia has King Amedeo I and Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi in charge at the start in 1936. The major political parties of Sardinia, as mentioned before, include the PPI, the PDSI, the ANI, and the PLI. Whichever party comes out on top will be able to reshape Sardinia according to its vision.

As for the parties themselves:

  • Italian People's Party (PPI; Social Conservative): An openly Christian party currently led by Alcide de Gasperi, the Italian People's Party is dedicated to representing the interests of the Vatican in the Sardinian political sphere and advocates for the enforcement of Catholic values in the public space alongside support for the conservative business class, traditional gender roles and private property rights, the result of the party's rightward shift after the Italian Civil War and marginalization of it's left-leaning reformist elements. The party enjoys strong support from many sectors of Sardinia's deeply Catholic population and seeks to combine civic governance with Christianity. Notable members include Stefano Cavazzini, Mario Scelba, Antonio Segni, and Luigi Sturzo.
  • Italian Social Democratic Party (PDSI; Social Democrat): A social-democratic party founded and led by Ivanoe Bonomi, the Italian Social Democratic Party is the remnant of Italy's reformist socialists and social democrats who refused to join their revolutionary socialist counterparts during the Italian Civil War. The PDSI promotes a moderate socialist ideology known as "Social Democracy" to advance public reforms, such as women's suffrage, expanding the welfare state and worker outreach, as an alternative to the RSI's revolutionary syndicalism. Notable members include Meuccio Ruini, Alberto Beneduce, Arturo Labriola and Claudio Treves.
  • Italian Liberal Party (PLI; Market Liberal): The successor to the pre-war Liberals and led by Luigi Einaudi, the Italian Liberal Party is centered around the liberal traditions of Italy and Western Europe since the 19th century and seeks to uphold them for the modern era. The Liberals are strong proponents of parliamentary democracy and will fight to ensure that it is upheld in both Sardinia and on the Italian mainland. Notable members include Marcello Soleri, Benedetto Croce and Enrico de Nicola.
  • Italian Nationalist Association (ANI; National Populist): A far-right ultranationalist group under the leadership of Costanzo Ciano, the Italian Nationalist Association represents a rising radical current in Sardinian politics. Unlike the other parties, the ANI is totalitarian, corporatist, anti-democratic and anti-socialist, pushing for the creation of a strong centralized state under a single leader who can restore Italian glory across the Mediterranean and return to the pre-revolutionary status quo with all traditional institutions subordinated to the state. Notable members include Luigi Federzoni, Francesco Coppola, Ezio Maria Gray and Maurizio Maraviglia.

Mechanics-wise, Sardinia has a political mechanic which tracks political influence and support within the Senate by party (PPI, PDSI, ANI, PLI and others) and allows the player the opportunity to lobby or target a specific party to boost their chances of electoral victory, as well as it changing depending on which party wins the election. In addition, there is an economic mechanic that involves expanding essential industries and securing investment/support from French companies, a military mechanic to train the armed forces and assist FMC cells in the RSI and an Entente foreign policy mechanic involving diplomatic visits and matters with the likes of National France, Canada and others (i.e. Portugal). Like the RSI, Sardinia can also intervene in overseas conflicts, such as in Spain and in America. Besides the mechanics, it's focus tree functions like a mix of base KR Sardinia and the Italian Republic.

Similar to the Italian Republic from pre-rework KR Italy, Sardinia is holding a snap election in 1936 in the wake of Black Monday to keep government stability and elect the next Prime Minister, with the King's approval. The candidates include the PPI's Stefano Cavazzini, the PDSI's Ivanoe Bonomi, the PLI's Luigi Einaudi and the ANI's Costanzo Ciano. Each of these four men is seeking the top post to either remodel or preserve Sardinian society and to prepare for the eventual reclamation of the mainland. The parties are in a tight race for the premiership, and the winner will be determined at the ballot box. It is a highly contested election that will determine the fate of Sardinia itself.

Depending on the player's decisions, Sardinia can elect the following parties and leaders:

- ANI in Power (Ciano): This path involves the ANI taking over the Sardinian government through election or force to establish a one-party totalitarian dictatorship that is essentially Fascist Italy meets Francoist Spain in terms of ideology and structure. Much like its pre-rework counterpart, the ANI can come to power in two distinct scenarios: one in which they win the 1936 elections, and one in which they successfully launch the March on Cagliari, with the support of King Amedeo I and the military in both examples. In any case, Constazo Ciano will be appointed Prime Minister and declare himself "Duce" (Leader) followed by the reorganization of the Kingdom of Italy to fit the ANI's vision with a strong party apparatus, all political opposition outlawed through the "White Terror," the abolition of elections, the legalization of the Blueshirts as the official paramilitry force of the country, the establishment of OVRA as the country's secret police, a corporatist economic policy and the National Council of Corporations and Delegates as the country's new legislature. ANI-related national spirits will pop up to represent their control over Sardinia, similar to Fascist RSI. In essence, the ANI seeks to create an all-encompassing dictatorship to remove all traces of revolutionary syndicalism from the Italian Peninsula by any means necessary, easily being the most dictatorial member of the Entente (surpassing even National France's Pétainist and Action Française paths). But regardless, Constazo Ciano will pass away eventually in 1939 and his son Gian Galeazzo Ciano will become the new Duce afterward. In any case, Sardinia will enter a new age of tyranny and repression.

- Democracy Triumphs: Should any of the democratic parties win the 1936 elections and/or the military choose to suppress the March on Cagliari, Sardinia will stay as a constitutional monarchy and preserve its democratic system, with the ANI officially outlawed for good and the next set of elections held in 1941. It opens up three main subpaths with their own political focus trees and national spirits, which include:

  • "The Fortress of Catholicism" (Cavazzini): Chosen if the player selects Stefano Cavazzini as Prime Minister, this path focuses on creating a conservative Christian democracy in Europe. Cavazzini's PPI will promote ties between the government and the Vatican to spread democracy and Political Catholicism to bring down the RSI. As mentioned previously, these policies include stronger connections with the Vatican, support for conservative business elites and property rights and an emphasis on traditional gender roles. The PPI continues to hold onto power in this scenario even if it allows other parties to compete. Overall, a conservative Christian democratic path for Sardinia.
  • "Reform and Prosperity" (Bonomi): Chosen if the player selects Ivanoe Bonomi as Prime Minister, this path makes Sardinia the bastion of social democracy in Europe, a bulwark against revolutionary socialism. Under Bonomi's leadership, the PDSI will expand the welfare state, forge closer worker cooperation with the monarchy and protect constitutional rights for all. The PDSI changes Italian politics with the rise of social democracy and a moderate form of socialism in contrast to the otherwise syndicalist-dominated Western Europe. It's a le wholesum path all things considered.
  • "The Liberal Tradition" (Einaudi): Chosen if the player selects Luigi Einaudi as Prime Minister, this path sees a Liberal resurgence across Sardinia, washing away the stain of Giolitti's past failures. Einaudi's PLI focuses on upholding constitutional rights under the Statuto Albertino, secular governance whilst keeping a friendly relationship with the Vatican and a liberist laissez-faire approach to economics. It is very much a democracy-oriented path, as the PLI seeks to protect not just the Savoyard monarchy but also the idea of parliamentary democracy from radical forces both inside and outside Italy. It is essentially a liberal, free Italy as one might say.

Likewise, the 1941 elections held during the Second Weltkrieg will bring about the next slate of candidates:

  • Stefano Cavazzini (Italian People's Party)
  • Ivanoe Bonomi or Meuccio Ruini (Italian Social Democratic Party)
  • Luigi Einaudi or Marcello Soleri (Italian Liberal Party)

Whether it is a dictatorship or a democracy, Sardinia is bound by one goal: the national reclamation of the Italian mainland from the Syndicalists.

The Second Weltkrieg

When the Second Weltkrieg begins, the two Italies will join the conflict on behalf of their respective alliances: the Italian Socialist Republic for the Third Internationale and the Kingdom of Italy for the Entente. This makes the Italian front yet another important theatre of the Second Weltkrieg, much like the First, with both Italian governments racing to unify the entire Italian Peninsula under their banners. In addition, Austria-Hungary will mobilize to defend its heartlands and the Veneto from any Italian incursions. In any case, Italy will see the flames of the Second Weltkrieg spread over to the Peninsula and Sardinia.

For the RSI, they will launch a "special military operation" into the Veneto with the assistance of Syndicalist France. If Austria-Hungary is still around and federalizes into the Danubian Federation/United States of Greater Austria, it will ask for assistance from Germany to stop the Franco-Italian advance and the RSI will have to go up against the former's sizable military garrison in the Veneto as a gate challenge for the player seeking to fully unify Italy. This also extends to Austria-Hungary having a greater chance of federalizing and reforming after the 1937 Ausgleich, taking the Austria-Hungary rework into account. Alternatively, if Austria-Hungary did collapse and Germany annexed Austria, then the RSI will attack a largely defenseless Venice led by Giuseppe Volpi instead, before moving on to Illyria and later Germany. The RSI also faces the prospect of a double assault by Sardinia and National France alongside a furious defense by a federalized Austria-Hungary, so they must take Veneto and advance quickly. Alternatively, if Austria-Hungary had disbanded before the war, it will be much easier for the RSI. In any case, the RSI represents the Third Internationale's main southern flank against the Austro-German front.

For Sardinia, they will launch the national reclamation of the Italian mainland, supported by National France and FMC partisan cells within the RSI. The reclamation will involve the Sardinian and National French militaries landing in Sicily and then taking the fight to the mainland with FMC units being added to the Sardinians as well. This ensures that the Entente would have an opening into the Mediterranean and could pin down the Third Internationale in a two-front struggle, alongside a potential assault by a federalized Austria-Hungary. Conversely, if Austria-Hungary dissolves, it's much harder to do so. Sardinia is essentially the Entente's key to securing a foothold in the Mediterranean.

When the Second Weltkrieg concludes, Italy has two main outcomes depending on the winners:

  • Third Internationale Victory: The Italian Socialist Republic will take not just Veneto but also Sardinia, Trentino, South Tyrol, Istria, Fiume, Trieste, Dalmatia, Malta and Corsica to form a strong Mediterranean socialist nation.
  • Entente Victory: Sardinia will re-establish the Kingdom of Italy on the mainland and absorb all of the former RSI's lands into a single Italian nation. Additionally, the Kingdom will negotiate with either Austria-Hungary or Germany to return the Veneto and ensure national unification on the basis of a shared opposition to the Syndicalist threat and the relinquishment of any other territorial claims to Italian-majority areas.

Starting National Spirits

Italian Socialist Republic (RSI)

- Socialist Rearmament: Italy's disastrous performance in the First Weltkrieg has made Italian leaders aware of the significant issues regarding the quality of its military and economy, so much so that the RSI has undergone an ambitious rearmanent programme since the late 1920s to make the Italian Red Army into a formidable fighting force in the Mediterranean through expansion, acquisition of key technologies and support from France and Britain. (Effects - Recruitable Population: +5.00%, War Support: +7.00%, Division Attack: +10.00%, Division Defense: +10.00% and Production Efficiency Growth: +10.00%)

- Italian Chetniks: Formed a few years after the Italian Civil War, the Clandestine Military Front (nicknamed the "Italian Chetniks") is a Sardinian-backed paramilitary organization of Royalist partisans in mainland Italy who form an effective stay-behind unit to help the House of Savoy return to power. Operating primarily in the conservative southern areas of the country, the FMC remains a relatively small but powerful agent of reaction embedded within our territories. (Effects - Recruitable Population Factor: -5%, Stability: -5.00% and War Support: -5.00%)

- Rising Authoritarianism: Since 1933, the Socialist Republic has been governed by President Mussolini, ruling as the leader of a coalition between the Fascists and the PSI's Maximalist-Syndicalists and invoking the memory of Risorgimento and Mazzini's Roman Republic. In spite of the propaganda, however, Mussolini has undertaken a series of authoritarian measures to consolidate his power, and some fear what he will do next. (Effects - Daily Political Power Cost: +0.25, War Support: +5.00% and Daily Totalist Support: +0.01)

Sardinia (Kingdom of Italy)

- French Influence: No nation has been more vital to the political, military and economic development of the Italian government-in-exile in Sardinia than the French Republic. The French Republic has played an outsized role in Sardinian affairs through its large share of trade, heavy investment in mining and agriculture, involvement in military matters, and direct influence in the halls of power, to the point that Sardinia has become a French client state to the dismay of some even within our own government. (Effects - Resource Gain Efficiency: +5.00% and War Support: +5.00%)

- Professional Military: The Regio Esercito has formed the institutional backbone of Sardinia alongside the House of Savoy, the Vatican and the Conservative Business Class. They have provided a sense of security and stability on the island to keep the peace and suppress internal secessionist or socialist opposition, and have spent the last few years remaking themselves into a small but well-trained fighting force prepared for the reclamation. (Effects - War Support: +5.00%, Division Attack: +10.00%, Division Defense: +10.00% and Division Limit: +5)

The Two Italies: A Kaiserreich Italy Rework Proposal (Part 1)

Introduction

The topic of an Italy rework or revamp has been a point of discussion for a while and some like myself have been making such proposals here for a while. It's no secret that KR Italy is outdated and inaccurate, a remnant of the mod's wackier legacy era. It's filled to the brim with both inaccurate and implausible elements that don't make much sense in KR's setting: Giuseppe Giulutti being the leader of the Socialist Republic of Italy when there are more prominent socialist politicians who could fill this role? The restoration of the Two Sicilies under the House of Bourbon, when they were already discredited over a century ago? The Two Sicilies' political parties being more right-leaning compared to in-game? The Vatican powerful enough to exercise power over Rome and other areas despite being subordinated to Italian rule since 1870? Austria-Hungary in any position to decide the fate of Italy by forming the Italian Federation, despite being just as battered and worn out after winning the Weltkrieg as Germany? These are the most egregious examples of KR Italy's many inaccuracies and flaws. And as the mod moves in a more plausible, grounded direction with greater verisimilitude, Italy desperately needs a major rework. In particular, the whole Balkanized Italy setup doesn't make much sense and needs to be replaced with something better.

As for KR Italy specifically, it makes no sense for them to be in a balkanized frozen civil war state for multiple reasons:

  • Italy's geography doesn't support the idea of a frozen civil war balkanized country as it's not large in population and geography in the same way as China and India. It's more similar to Spain and that country had a civil war that ended in the Nationalists taking over the entire country after winning against the Republicans in three years.
  • At the start, the Italian Republicans would control the industrialized and populous North, giving them a major advantage over the Italian Royalists and any other opposing factions in the civil war. The Republicans also possess greater industry, population, and political support than the Royalists, and would sweep through much of the country, backed by military support from many disillusioned Weltkrieg veterans and defectors.
  • The threat of revolution or civil war in OTL's Italy came from socialist and syndicalist groups such as the workers' councils and the Red Guards during the Biennio Rosso from 1919-20. This means that any Italian republican faction would be dominated by radical syndicalists, socialists, and anarchists who want to overthrow the old "bourgeois order" and replace it with a socialist republic with no room for any liberal or conservative elements to participate.
  • Austria-Hungary is very much worn out and battered after winning the Weltkrieg and is in a state of recovery by this point. They are in no position to help any anti-socialist faction in the Italian Civil War, let alone create the Italian Federation.
  • Even in OTL and in KR, Italy saw militant strikes and protests by socialist groups against the war in places like Milan and Turin as early as 1917, in addition to mass desertions and even some collective acts of indiscipline from soldiers in the Italian Army after Caporetto. Likewise, the Italian Socialist Party received the most votes of any political party in the 1919 election, and the threat of revolution in Italy came from revolutionary socialist groups such as the workers' councils and the Red Guards, which launched strikes and seized control of factories during the aforementioned Biennio Rosso (1919-1920). Finally, the PSI was under the Maximalists, who favored the overthrow of the existing government in favor of a new socialist society and adopted such a platform by October 1919, even more so in KR, given the success of the Syndicalist revolution in France.
  • Italy has a strong tradition of socialist politics, as the PSI's success in the post-war election, Bienno Rossio can attest and the PCdI can attest, and socialist trade unions have vocal, visible followings, such as the General Confederation of Labour (CGdL) and the Italian Syndicalist Union (USI), something that would become more apparent in KR, with the Italian Socialists following in the footsteps of the Syndicalists in France and united in their opposition to the monarchy and "bourgeois order."
  • Finally, Italian national identity and culture have been firmly entrenched in the minds of many Italians in the North, the South, and Sardinia for decades since Giuseppe Garibaldi's Risorgimento in 1861, not to mention that the Bourbons were kicked out of Italy and became irrelevant and the Papacy had been a microstate subservient to the Italian state. There wouldn't be any strong regional identities, such as the Papal States or the Two Sicilies, by the early 20th century.

Overall, Italy's geography, the widespread influence and popularity of socialism and mutinous soldiers supporting socialism make the idea of a frozen civil-war balkanized nation impossible by 1936. Thus, the concept must be cut entirely. What do I propose to replace it with? Well, the idea of a Split Italy would still be retained, but it would be fundamentally different to better reflect New KR's move towards historical groundedness and versimilitude. More importantly, the proposal draws inspiration from Italy's rich socialist history and revolutionary sentiment within the PSI and among the workers through specific books and articles, as well as from similar proposals with adjustments, Italy's northern-southern divide, rework proposals for the Third Internationale (France and Britain) and Progress Reports for other nations. Basically, there would be two Italian governments: the Italian Socialist Republic (comprising much of the Italian Peninsula and Sicily), and the Kingdom of Italy aka Sardinia (comprising only Sardinia itself, similar to current KR's Sardinia). Think of the new Italy setup as like OTL's People's Republic of China in the mainland and OTL's Republic of China in Taiwan and you get the idea.

As for the lore and the rest of the setup, bear with me as there are going to be essential details on what KR Italy will be like in this hypothetical rework in a two-part proposal:

Italian History (1919-1936)

The Civil War

Italy's participation in the Weltkrieg on the side of the Entente was nothing short of a disaster. Not only did Italy fail to secure the Italian-majority territories of Austria-Hungary that had been promised in the Treaty of London, but it also suffered humiliating defeats at Caporetto, Eritrea and especially Trento. The war left many Italians dissatisfied and bitter towards the government and the current system.

After signing the Armistice of Venice with Austria-Hungary in August 1919, the Italian government not only had to deal with widespread discontent over the war and Austro-Hungarian occupation of Veneto but also had to return to peacetime to rebuild the economy and ratify a peace treaty, so it chose to hold elections in January 1920. Moreover, Vittorio Emanuele III had abdicated as King owing to his personal guilt over Italy's failure to win the war and the subsequent unpopularity, and was followed by Vittorio Emanuele Orlando's resignation as Prime Minister. The resignations of both the King and Vittorio meant the Italian government had to move quickly to find people to run the country. This resulted in the selection of cabinet minister and economist Francesco Saverio Nitti as Prime Minister, and of Emanuele Filberto as King Emanuele I. Still, protests against the Savoyard monarchy's decision to sign the armistice with Austria-Hungary and the initial temporary occupation of Veneto had begun shortly after its signing, becoming most common in the northern and central regions. The Italian government had also (reluctantly) relinquished control of Eritrea to Abyssinia, the North African colonial possessions of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania, and the newly independent Somalia in East Africa. Unsurprisingly, the discontent over the armistice, coupled with an economic crisis and territorial losses, led to widespread anti-monarchy sentiment and the rise of socialist organizations across the country, most notably the rapidly growing Italian Socialist Party (PSI) which won the 1920 elections with a strong majority in the Chamber of Deputies and led to the collapse of the Liberal-led governing coalition. However, the new government would not be led by the PSI; instead, it would be led by Nitti and the Italian Radical Party (PRI), which ran on the same ticket as the Liberals in the election. Nitti's ministry sought to maintain the existing government in Rome and work with other parties for this very purpose, whilst reviving the war-ravaged economy and keeping out any radical elements. But the PSI, led by Nicola Bombacci, was simply not content serving under Nitti and King Emanuele. The PSI, after all, largely opposed the monarchy's decision to enter the war on the Entente side in 1915 and hated the Savoyards for this reason. It was also known to harbor significant revolutionary sentiment from the Maximalists, a radical faction that called for the establishment of a socialist republic to replace the "bourgeois" monarchy. Moreover, the PSI held control over the Chamber of Deputies and was the most popular party, electorally speaking. The PSI itself would soon witness and participate in the rise of a radical revolution that would change Italian history forever.

Likewise, the protests over the armistice and dire economic conditions gradually escalated into revolutionary demonstrations across the cities and towns of northern and central Italy starting in March 1920, not long after the election, as industrial workers formed workers' councils and Red Guards, launched massive strikes, and clashed with monarchist-aligned authorities, inspired by the Syndicalist revolution in France. A general strike was first called in Turin that month, inspiring further protests and confrontations across northern and central Italy. Entire factories were seized and reorganized by the workers and the peasants would later join the demonstrations. Other demonstrations broke out in Italy's predominantly agricultural South with many returning veterans protesting against the government. The military and police struggled to put down the demonstrators and responded with violence, which in turn led to demonstrators being shot or killed, most notably in Milan in June, with several dead and others injured. Moreover, returning veterans would join the revolutionaries and serve as guardians, while some policemen would defect in response to the violence. The number of strikes and confrontations swelled over time, becoming more commonplace throughout northern and central Italy. Moreover, northern Italy had been the site of protests over the war and food shortages in Milan and Turin as early as 1917, organized in part by Italian socialist organizations, and of the Red Week of 1914 against militarism. The workers' councils and Red Guards became increasingly militant over time and caught the attention of both the PSI and the General Confederation of Labor (CGL), which were increasingly sympathetic to the socialist rebels for their revolutionary, anti-monarchist beliefs. The Italian Syndicalist Union (USI) would become the first major Italian socialist organization to officially endorse the workers' councils and Red Guards, followed by the PSI, the CGL and others. Additionally, the Fasci d'Azione Rivoluzionaria (FAR) saw a spike in membership through it's leader Benito Mussolini supporting a syndicalist-led "social revolution" and revolutionary overthrow of the parliamentary establishment shared with other socialist groups. The Italian socialist movement saw large-scale growth in its membership, with recruits sharing revolutionary, anti-monarchist sentiments. One segment of the PSI, the Ordinovists, led by newspaper editor Antonio Gramsci of L'Ordine Nuovo, advocated for a socialist republic led by workers' councils to replace the bourgeois monarchy and found a significant audience amongst Italian socialists. The outbreak of the French Civil War and the rise of Syndicalist revolutionaries in France provided inspiration for the PSI to decisively move to form a revolutionary united front with the CGL, the USI, the FAR and others to oppose the Nitti ministry by September 1920, coupled with the government's ruthless suppression of Italian laborers and veterans in places like Milan. If the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Veneto hadn't fully convinced the PSI and other socialist organizations that the monarchy was losing its right to exist, the subsequent suppression of workers and farmers did so. The PSI would adopt a new platform in Bologna by October, calling for the overthrow of bourgeois rule and the creation of a socialist society modeled after the French syndicalist revolutionaries. The moderate Reformists, led by party founder Filippo Turati, became increasingly marginalized under the PSI's revolutionary Maximalist leadership and would eventually leave the party after the Bologna congress. From now on, revolutionaries dominated both the PSI and the Italian socialist movement.

The PSI's open alignment with the socialist rebels and trade unions would set it on a collision course with the Italian government over the country's future. The PSI and the Italian socialist movement saw the monarchy as nothing more than a failed experiment and were ready to put an end to it once and for all. The fact that Nitti and the Savoyards failed to contain the unrest in northern and central Italy was also beneficial to the revolution, as was Nitti's eventual resignation in favor of moderate veteran politician Giovanni Giolitti as Prime Minister. The rise of the Federation of French Communes would give further justification for the PSI's revolutionary united front to launch a full-scale uprising. Conversely, the other parties saw the PSI's revolutionary platform as a radical threat to their way of life, as they wished to salvage the Kingdom from the scars of war and address its economic hardships amongst the workers. In any case, the opposing views on Italy's post-war future would culminate in open conflict. With the Maximalists leading the PSI and working with Italian socialist organizations, the time for revolution would soon come.

In February 1921, the PSI, alongside the USI, the CGL, the FAR, and others would launch a revolution starting in the north with socialist forces (consisting of the Red Guards and workers' councils) seizing control of Milan, Torino, and Florence, assisted by defectors from the Italian military and police. The PSI and its allies, under the leadership of Nicola Bombacci and anti-war socialist Giacinto Meniotti Serrati, would proclaim the formation of the Italian Socialist Republic in Torino and urged Italians to overthrow the old monarchy. In response, the Italian government, led by Giolitti and King Emanuele, would mobilize its forces to crush the socialist revolutionaries and deal with similar activity elsewhere. The socialists would do very much the same and plan major offensives into the rest of the country. The country would soon be split into two factions: The Republicans (comprised of Syndicalists, Anarchists and Fascists) and the Royalists (comprised of Democrats, Monarchists, the Vatican, and Nationalists). The Republicans would consolidate the Red Guards and workers' militias into the Italian Red Army, and the Royalists would preserve the Regio Esercito for the armed struggle. Thus began the Italian Civil War, one of the defining socialist revolutions of Western Europe alongside the French Civil War (1919-1920) and the British Revolution (1924-1925).

Throughout the Italian Civil War, the Republicans possessed significant advantages in industry, military, popular support and morale owing to their uncontested dominance over much of the North and Central areas since the PSI's victories during the 1919 election (excluding the Austrian-occupied Veneto). In contrast, the Royalists were largely confined to the rural, less industrialized South and bore the stigma of having lost the Weltkrieg, coupled with the suppression of political dissent and major defections within the military to Republican forces. These factors would ultimately decide the course of the conflict.

The Republicans would then launch a major offensive in April to seize the capital, Rome, against the Royalist government. This would soon turn into a prolonged struggle over the fate of the city dnd, by extension, the rest of the South, as Republican and Royalist forces clashed in the towns of Fiano Romano and Monterotondo, which were located not far from Rome itself and had been heavily fortified. The Battles of Fiano Romano and Monterotondo lasted for five months with heavy fighting between the Republican and Royalist armies. Eventually, the Italian Republicans would make a breakthrough and secure both by September. The Republican victories at Fiano Romano and Monterotondo opened a clear path for the revolutionaries to secure Rome and go further into the South. The news of socialist victories in Fiano Romano and Monterotondo would cause considerable panic in Rome as an exodus of citizens from the city occurred and the military and police were struggling to keep order. For the King and Giolitti, the very idea of the Republicans marching on Rome was a mortal blow to the Royalist war effort as it meant the loss of the most important city in Italy and socialist control being solidified even further. But with the Republicans having captured both towns and Rome in sight, the Royalist government had no choice but to evacuate elsewhere. For the rest of the war, the capital would be moved to Palermo, located in the monarchist stronghold of Sicily. Meanwhile, the Republicans would arrive in Rome to see a city that experienced chaos and Royalist suppression. Republican forces would occupy the Eternal City and raise the red flag. From that point on, Rome would remain under Republican control.

With Rome secure, the Republicans would plan further offensives against Royalist forces in the South. The Southern campaign would not be an easy endeavor, as the South was more sympathetic to Royalism than to Republicanism and voted for the Liberal-led coalition government, coupled with its relative lack of an industrial base or a strong socialist movement. Still, the lack of an industrial base in the South and the monarchy's unpopularity amongst returning veterans would help Republican forces seize the region and confront local resistance. It also helped that the Italian Republican government received official diplomatic recognition from the Federation of French Communes, which would become its most important ally by covertly sending military advisors and supplies to assist its Syndicalist comrades against the Royalists. Conversely, Austria-Hungary did not intervene despite occupying the Veneto, due to significant tensions among its various ethnic groups and constitutencies as well as being in a state of recovery after the Weltkrieg, though it did keep soldiers near the Italian-Austrian border in case the Republicans chose to attack.

In time, the Italian Republicans would gradually take over the rest of the South and push the Royalists out of the Peninsula thanks to their existing advantages. Republican forces would win crucial victories in battles such as Gaeta, Refrano, Naples, and Sidarno from November 1921 to July 1922. The Italian Royalists fought as hard as they could to hold onto their southern strongholds and won some small victories. But the Republican advantages proved too much for the Royalist armies, who were forced back elsewhere. By April 1923, the Republicans had taken full control of Sicily and thus successfully secured much of the Italian Peninsula under the red banner. By then, the Royalist government and its sympathizers, with assistance from the Italian military, carried out a full-scale evacuation to the island of Sardinia, the spiritual birthplace of the Kingdom of Italy and the House of Savoy.

After two years, the Italian Civil War had finally ended, changing the very fabric of Italian society forever. Western Europe saw the rise of another Syndicalist nation and the collapse of the old regime. There now existed two Italies with different visions of what the country should be: One a revolutionary socialist republic and one a traditionalist monarchy. These clashing visions would be fated to fight one another for the fate of Italy in the next decade.

Aftermath

The end of the Italian Civil War (1921-1923) led to the emergence of two opposing Italian nations: the Italian Socialist Republic in Rome and the Kingdom of Italy in Cagliari. Much as what happened in France and eventually in Britain, there were two rival governments claiming to be the true representatives of an entire nation. This would also extend to the post-war culture and development in the two Italies.

In the RSI, the Italian Socialist Party-led government would be organized along the lines of its ally, France, but tailored to the Italian experience, as set forth in the 1924 Socialist Constitution. The RSI would be a socialist federal republic with significant autonomy for specific regions and political participation by major parties, trade unions, and workers' councils with elections happening every five years. The RSI's title for the head of state would be "President of the Council of Ministers" and "Chief of the Council of Ministers," simply titled "President" to represent the collective role of the position much like in France. Elections would be held every four years and the Chairman would serve as long as they wished, provided they had the support of their coalition. The Italian Parliament was replaced by the Chamber of Labour, a bicameral legislature split into the People's Assembly and the Council of Labour Deputies, modeled after the French Popular Assembly. The first set of elections would be held in 1924, with PSI chairman Nicola Bombacci elected as President. In economic terms, the RSI would enact a sweeping, ambitious program of reforms to rebuild the Peninsula and Sicily into a self-described "socialist paradise." These reforms included the abolition of private property, a mixed economy through workers' councils and cartels, elected representation amongst the unions, the nationalization of businesses such as banks and factories, and land redistribution to the peasantry, with the use of the industrial centers of the North and the cooperation of peasant communities in the South to drive growth. As for culture, the RSI would serve as a revolutionary entity seeking to radically transform Italian society with an emphasis on Giuseppe Garibaldi's Risorgimento and the Italian Civil War as the basis for its new national identity. Likewise, the RSI was opposed to traditional institutions like the Roman Catholic Church and wealthy landowners and worked to weaken their influence over the country, most notably a policy of strict secularism through anti-clerical campaigns dismantling Catholic political power through bans on religious education, seizing church property and arrests of pro-Royalist clergy alongside the breakup of large estates in the South and subsequent land redistribution to the peasants, though Italy's strongly Catholic population meant that religions like Christianity were allowed to be practiced by it's citizens but without any genuine political power. All in all, the RSI represented a new kind of Italian society, one that was socialist, revolutionary and secular.

Conversely, the House of Savoy and the military focused on rebuilding pre-war Italian society on the island stronghold of Sardinia. The old institutions and laws, like the Statuto Albertino, were largely preserved, albeit with some modifications. The nation was officially a constitutional monarchy, ruled by the King, with the Prime Minister as head of government, responsible for the day-to-day running of the country, along with the cabinet and Parliament (comprising the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies). Additionally, the Vatican would re-establish its operations in Cagliari and would serve as an essential pillar of support for the Royalist government and for any dissident Catholics opposing the RSI from within. Though Sardinia possessed a distinct culture and language, the influx of Italian exiles from the mainland and the established Savoyard history facilitated the relatively seamless integration of the old government's structures (besides the ruthless suppression of Sardinian nationalists and autonomists). Economically, the government would focus on developing the mining and agricultural industries to export raw materials and feed its populace, as well as draining swamplands to create valuable farmland. More importantly, Sardinia promoted itself as the "true Italy" and as the protector of Italian tradition against the socialist Republicans, using traditional institutions to build its base of support. For the Royalists, the reclamation of the mainland would be their primary goal, one shared with the Entente exiles in British Canada and in French Africa.

The long-term geopolitical destinies of the two Italies would be determined not only by events in Europe in the 1920s and 30s but also by their respective governments' actions. Moreover, the RSI and Sardinia were closely linked to the rival French governments, who were equally interested in the fate of Italy itself: The French Federation for the Italian Socialist Republic and the French Republic for the Kingdom of Italy. Both nations were also part of the alliances of their French benefactors: The RSI and Syndicalist France co-founding the Third Internationale and Sardinia joining the Entente with National France. In turn, the RSI would receive support and recognition from Britain, and Sardinia would get backing from the Dominion of Canada (the official British government in exile). Soon, the Italian Peninsula became a key battleground in the war of European alliances between the Third Internationale, the Entente and the Reichspakt.

The Italian Socialist Republic's history would be largely dominated by the PSI and its alliance with syndicalist organizations such as the USI and the CGL, as well as by the rise of the nationalist FAR. The PSI was the dominant party of the republic, while the USI supplanted the CGL as Italy's leading trade union and the FAR expanded its operations and membership to become a powerful force in mainland Italian politics. Under the leadership of President Bombacci, the RSI became a revanchist, irredentist socialist republic focused on the full unification of Italy, the reclamation of the Veneto from the Austro-Hungarians, and the return of Italian-majority lands such as Trento, Trieste, Istria, and Dalmatia. In particular, the nations of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Sardinia were seen as the greatest enemies to the Italian people, the former two for their role in Italy's defeat in the Weltkrieg and the latter for representing the old regime. In the eyes of the RSI, Austria-Hungary and Germany were imperialist powers that had to be broken up into multiple socialist states, and Sardinia was to be brought back into the Italian fold to achieve national renewal, a goal widely embraced by Italian Socialists. The RSI's main focus would be on economic development and close foreign ties with the Third Internationale, as it would sign various trade and military agreements with Syndicalist France and Britain and organize diplomatic visits to Paris or London. These agreements allowed the Republic to acquire essential materials such as food and oil, establish reliable connections with its socialist allies against competing markets like Mitteleuropa, gain technical advice, and assist in the eventual rearmament of its military starting in the mid-to-late 1920s. The RSI would use these agreements and its existing industrial base to expand its factories and dockyards and to continue pushing for rearmament to establish a formidable military capable of challenging the Austro-Hungarians in the Veneto and the Adriatic Sea. On the political front, the PSI continued to lead the country and Bombacci was re-elected as President in 1929, but this would coincide with the FAR's growing political influence in the halls of Rome. Since the Italian Civil War, the FAR had been gaining more support among Italian syndicalists, who called for the reclamation of Veneto and other Italian-majority lands from the Austrians and the Sardinians. Moreover, Mussolini's charismatic leadership of the FAR, his war hero background, and his promises of a strong, united Italy under one leader and one vision appealed to many Italians angered by the Austrian occupation of the Veneto, the rival government in Sardinia and the desire for national renewal, as were his close ties and influence on British Maximist figure Oswald Mosley. The PSI's leader, Bombacci, also shared nationalistic leanings and thus sympathized with Mussolini's views, who saw his goals as very much like his own. Indeed, by the 1929 election, the FAR had made significant electoral gains, doubling its share of seats and votes in the Chamber of Labour and outperforming it's previous share of seats and votes from 1924. This would be a sign of things to come for Italian politics, as a nationalistic form of syndicalism became more popular and prominent, representing the Italian people's frustrations over its defeat in the Weltkrieg and demands for a unified, powerful "Great Italy." The PSI's Maximalists gravitated towards an alliance with the Fascists owing to their shared syndicalist and nationalist beliefs and Mussolini's past history with the group. As the Fascists grew in numbers and influence, they secretly organized meetings with the Maximalists, involving the leadership of both factions, such as Mussolini and Bombacci, between 1932 and 1933. The two sides agreed to put forth a joint ticket, with Mussolini himself as the candidate for both the Fascists and the Maximalists, on a platform combining revolutionary socialist sentiment with radical nationalism. This would ensure that Mussolini had a clear path to the Presidency. In the 1933 election, the FAR would have its best results yet, winning a relative majority of seats and votes thanks to its partnership with the PSI, and surpassing the USI/CGL. The Fascists would soon form a new governing coalition with the PSI's Maximalists and Mussolini was officially appointed as President not long after. Under Mussolini's leadership, the RSI has taken a more authoritarian and nationalistic direction with the office of the Presidency given far-reaching powers and greater authority over others, a change in election laws to allow the party with the most votes to receive two-thirds of all seats in the Chamber of Labour, the appointment of Fascist political commissars to indoctrinate the divided Italian Red Army and the FAR's Blackshirts or Fascist Squads being deputized as the RSI's official state militia, with eventual plans to introduce a new Socialist Constitution that will put Mussolini in a position of unprecedented dominance. The RSI's recent political direction has concerned some syndicalists about its very nature and has inspired others, though it remains to be seen whether the FAR will be able to push through its proposed Constitution or not in the Chamber of Labour.

For Sardinia, the House of Savoy and the military would work to ensure that order was maintained on the island and that any potential opposition was eliminated by force shortly after their arrival on the island. The competing political parties and factions of Sardinia were unified by their desire to reclaim the mainland from syndicalist rule, their anti-syndicalism, and their support for the Savoyard monarchy, but were divided over how to realize this vision. This vision would be contested by Sardinia's four main political parties: the Christian-conservative Italian People's Party (PPI), the social-democratic Italian Social Democratic Party (PDSI), the classical-liberal Italian Liberal Party (PLI) and the far-right Italian Nationalist Association (ANI). The first set of elections in Sardinia was held in 1925, resulting in a PPI-led government with Catholic politician Alcide de Gasperi elected as Prime Minister owing to it's conservative platform, support for the Savoyards and the Roman Catholic Church and the pre-war Liberals' failed leadership under Giolitti during the civil war, though the PDSI (led by Ivanoe Bonomi) and ANI (led by Constazo Ciano) made electoral gains as well due to the former's moderate social democratic platform and opposition to syndicalism and the latter's revanchist nationalism and calls for Italian unification. For the House of Savoy and King Emanuele I, the goal of returning to the mainland went far beyond the parties themselves and was essential to the long-term success and rejuvenation of the Kingdom of Italy beyond just Sardinia. This also extended to official support for Royalist cells, including the Fronte Militare Clandestino (FMC), a paramilitary organization dedicated to overthrowing the Republican government and re-establishing the Italian monarchy on the mainland. Moreover, Sardinia's hopes and aspirations became closely tied to the exiled French Republic in Africa, whose leadership saw the Sardinians as a reliable ally against the Syndicalists on the Italian mainland and in Western Europe, given its geographic proximity to National French-controlled Corsica and Malta. The National French role in Sardinian affairs would heavily affect its economic and military spheres, with French trade comprising the majority of imports, heavy investment in essential industries like mining and agriculture and cooperation between the armed forces of both nations. National France would also assist in the development of Sardinia's military through advisors and technology exchanges. But beneath the surface, Sardinia's political evolution was marked by the PPI's tenuous hold on the government and challenges from other parties in the 1928 and 1932 elections. The PPI in 1928, during the Great Depression, conceded some seats and votes to the likes of the PDSI and ANI, with smaller but no less significant gains by the PLI, though the PPI would rebound in 1932 and won or regained seats and votes. Finally, Emanuele I had passed away from natural causes in 1931 and his Amedeo I became the new King of the House of Savoy and Italy. Now, Sardinia stands at a political crossroads, with Christian conservatives, social democrats, ultranationalists, and liberals fighting over its very future, as the next election will determine who will form the new government with the support of King Amedeo himself.

In 1936, the two Italies are now on opposing political paths. The Italian Socialist Republic is witnessing the rise of a Totalist leader on par with Britain's Mosley, and the Kingdom of Italy is facing fierce competition among its parties over whether to preserve the current status quo or radically change it. Whatever the case, the choices made on the Italian mainland and in Sardinia will have consequences for Italy's future.
