Let FD sleep downstairs?

Single foster parent with my first placement. It's only respite, she is scheduled to go home next Friday.

The first two nights my FD (11y/o) had anxiety at bed time and ended up sleeping in a tent on the floor (with a cushion under her and blankets). Both nights I went to bed before she fell asleep. I told her she could sleep anywhere in the room as long as a)she stayed in the room and b) she slept.

Last night same thing, except this morning I found her sleeping downstairs on the couch with the TV on.

She had said she usually falls asleep to rh TV, but I won't put one in her room. I gave her a sound machine, but apparently that wasn't enough.

What do you suggest? Enforce her sleeping in the bedroom? How to keep her from sneaking down in the middle of the night?

She's a good kid, and she didn't make a mess or ear a bunch of junk or anything. Just turned on cartoons. I don't know how long she was up watching tv, but it'a the weekend, so I'm less worried about that.

Edited to add: what I am worried about is her impulsivity. Who knows what she'll get a wild hair about and get into. Her mom also lives less than a mile from me, and she knows how to walk there. She hasn't shown signs of wanting to sneak out, but it's in the back of my mind.

Work Accommodations that Made a Difference

Hi All,

First time parent, single and currently 11w pregnant.

I work for a very small (4 employees) nonprofit in the US, and we have no parental benefits set up because no one has become a parent before while working here. I'm in a position to ask for pretty much any benefit I need, but I don't know what will help the most.

What did your company provide that made a difference in your pre- or post-natal experience?

Currently I'm remote 4 days a week and in office 1 day. My state will cover about 50% of my salary for 2 weeks prenatal and 8 weeks after birth.

Is a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DCFSA) worth it? Or should I take the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC) instead?

Having a Girl - help me match up first and middle names

Hi All,

I just found out I'm having a girl, and I need to start narrowing down my list of names. I have a few first names I really like, and a few middle names I also like, but can't decide on the combinations that work the best. My last name is similar to Lowry.

First names: Lily, Adrienne, Charlotte, Caroline, Samantha, Camille, Violet, Rosemary, Cora

Middle names: Family names - Cary, Renee, Jean, Leigh. Other names - Jade, Marie, Grace

Oreo Truffles with dietary restrictions

I'm going to a BBQ this evening and the host is celiac (yes, diagnosed), dairy-free and has a severe tree nut allergy. I'm making a dessert.

Since the event is today, I don't have time to run around and source a ton of alternative ingredients, so I'm trying to be a little creative.

This is the recipe I'm starting with: https://wholefoodfor7.com/gluten-free-dairy-free-lemon-oreo-truffles/

Ingredients:

30 cookies Gluten-free Golden Oreos 1 12-ounce package

3 ounces dairy-free cream cheese cut into rough cubes

1.5 teaspoons lemon extract

2 tablespoons lemon zest from a large lemon, divided

1 cup dairy-free white chocolate chips

I'm fairly confident I can get GF oreos and GF/non dairy white chocolate, but I don't really trust dairy-alternative cream cheese. I'm thinking there has to be another binder I can use. Coconut cream? Eggs (yolks, whites or whole eggs?)

I'm open to other ideas as well, if you have a go-to dessert recipe that is gluten, dairy, and nut-free. The whole Internet seems to think pavlova is the correct answer, but meringue is probably the only dessert on the whole planet that I don't like.

Amazing resource on IVF "add ons"

This database is in the news today in the US. It's a group of Australian scientists who did a literature review of the effectiveness of various additional tests/procedures related to IVF.

It includes things like acupuncture, embryo glue, PGT-A, etc. Fascinating stuff. Though I will admit my main takeaway is that more research is needed on all of it. A lot of their findings are "maybe, but the study that's been done wasn't really that great".

More Of This!

I think one of the coolest things about the UFL is that all the players have pretty unique stories. Some of them have Superbowl rings, others have inspirational "never give up on your dreams" stories. Cornell Powell being the first player in history to have won a Superbowl, an NCAA championship and a UFL championship is cool stuff.

And this is just so damn cute: https://www.espn.com/united-football-league/story/\_/id/49002139/ufl-dc-defenders-andre-mintze-pto-unretire

I really want the UFL, or at least the individual teams to highlight these players more!

Biking on Bainbridge Island - Recommendations?

I have 24hrs in Seattle after a conference next week (Thurs - Fri) and want to spend most of it on Bainbridge Island. Would love specific advice on the following, but any suggestions/other info I need to know would also be great!

- Bike rental - rent in Seattle or on the Island? Any specific shops you trust? I don't need a top of the line racing bike, but something better than a beach cruiser would be nice.

- Recommended bike route? I found this on an old post: https://www.obatik.com/assets/Images/Biking/2014chillyhilly.pdf. I'm guessing it's about 30 miles total, which is probably my upper limit.

- Food/drink? I'm a very adventurous eater and prefer the hole-in-the-wall that's been there for 3 generations over the fancy new restaurant with a decorated chef.

- The current plan is to find an AirBnB or hotel on Bainbridge Island itself. Any recommendations?

Thank you!
