Where should an outdoorsy person in their 20s live around Troy?

Hey! I recently moved to the Troy area for work and my current lease ends in January, so I’m starting to explore where I might want to live next. I’ll probably be looking for at least a 1-year lease.
Ideally I’d like to stay within ~20 minutes of Troy for work, but I’m willing to stretch that a little for the right area.

I’m in my early 20s and not really a bars/restaurants/nightlife person. I’d much rather be somewhere with good parks and trails for running, nature, climbing, hiking, camping, kayaking/paddleboarding, etc. I know the really amazing outdoors are farther north/UP, but I’d love somewhere that at least makes it easy to be outside regularly.

I’m also really hoping to find an outdoorsy community here — climbing friends, run/hiking groups, people who do weekend camping trips or go explore different parts of Michigan, etc. I’d love to get more into climbing in particular.
I’ve heard Royal Oak mentioned a lot for people in their 20s, but nightlife isn’t really important to me. I’ve also been looking at Rochester/Rochester Hills and areas north of Troy, but I’m very new to Michigan and honestly don’t know where the outdoorsy younger crowd tends to be.

If you were in your 20s, worked in Troy, and prioritized nature/outdoor activities + finding an active community, where would you live?

Also, any recommendations for climbing gyms, outdoor clubs, hiking/camping groups, run clubs, kayaking groups, or just good ways to meet people with similar interests would be VERY appreciated.

Best dealership for a used car in Troy, Mi ? Looking for good prices + trustworthy service

I recently moved to Troy and I’m looking to buy a used SUV, probably a Mazda, around $17,000.
What dealerships around Troy / Royal Oak / Madison Heights / Metro Detroit would you actually recommend for buying used?

I’m willing to drive farther if the dealership is worth it. I’m mainly looking for:

Competitive/cheap pricing without a bunch of hidden fees
Honest salespeople who aren’t super pushy
Good quality used cars
Good after-sale/customer service
A service department that is actually trustworthy
No weird mandatory add-ons
Willing to let me get an independent pre-purchase inspection

I’m new to Michigan, so I don’t really know which dealerships have a good reputation here and which ones I should avoid.

I’m planning to keep the car for at least 4 years and do quite a bit of highway/long-distance driving, so I’d rather buy from somewhere reputable than just find the absolute cheapest listing.

Which dealerships have you personally had a good experience with, and are there any I should absolutely avoid?

Which used Mazda SUV should I buy around $17k?

I just moved to Troy, Michigan and I’m looking for a used SUV around $17,000. I’m leaning toward Mazda because I really like how they look and especially their more premium-looking interiors.
I’m fine with going a few years older if that’s the more reliable choice. Ideally, I’d like something with 35,000 miles or less that can reliably last me at least the next 4 years.

I’ll be driving in Michigan year-round, so I need something that can handle the winters, snow, heavy traffic, and regular highway driving. I also plan on traveling quite a bit and want to be able to do 8+ hour round trips without worrying about the car.
I would also really like a panoramic sunroof if I can get one within my budget.
For Mazda SUVs, what year, model, and trim would you recommend?

I’ve heard some newer Mazdas can have issues, so I’m not necessarily looking for the newest year. I’d rather get an older, proven model with low mileage if it’s going to be more reliable.
What years/models would you specifically look for or avoid for reliability, long road trips, Michigan winters, and keeping it for 4+ years?

Affordable apartment recommendations in Royal Oak for someone working in Troy?

Hi! I’m relocating to the area for a new job in Troy and need to find housing ASAP. I start work Monday, so I’m hoping to move in this weekend if possible.
I’m in my early 20s and have been considering Royal Oak because I’ve heard it’s a nice area for young professionals, but I’m having trouble figuring out which apartments are actually good and reasonably priced.
I’m primarily looking for a studio or 1 bedroom. Furnished would be amazing since I’m relocating on very short notice, but unfurnished is completely fine too. I’d also be open to a room/shared apartment, particularly if there’s an established roommate-matching setup.
My priorities are a safe area, decent management, and a reasonable commute to Troy. A basic gym and somewhere nearby to run would be great too.
Does anyone have specific apartment communities they’d recommend or places I should avoid? I’d also really appreciate any leads on subleases, lease takeovers, or places with immediate availability.
Thank you!!

Apartment recommendations in Rochester Hills near Troy? Moving ASAP

Hi! I’m relocating to the area for a new job in Troy and need to find housing ASAP. I start work Monday, so I’m hoping to move in this weekend if possible.
I’m looking at Rochester Hills because it seems like a nice area while still being reasonably close to Troy.
I’m primarily looking for a studio or 1-bedroom, ideally around $1,500/month or less. Furnished would be amazing since I’m relocating on such short notice, but unfurnished is completely fine too. I’d also be open to a room/shared apartment, especially if there’s an apartment community with roommate matching.
I’m in my early 20s and mainly looking for somewhere safe, well managed, and ideally within about a 10–20 minute drive of Troy. A basic gym and nearby parks or trails would be a plus.
Does anyone have specific apartment communities they’d recommend or places I should avoid? I’d also love to hear about any subleases, lease takeovers, or places with immediate availability.
Thank you!!

Best off-campus housing near Oakland University/Troy? Need to move ASAP

Hi! I’m relocating to the area for a new job in Troy and need to find housing ASAP. I start work Monday, so I’m hoping to move in this weekend if possible.
I’ve been looking around Oakland University because it seems close enough to Troy, and I figured there may be more affordable off-campus housing options that I haven’t found on Zillow.
I’m primarily looking for a studio or 1-bedroom, but I’m also open to a room/shared apartment, especially if there’s an apartment community that offers roommate matching.
Furnished would be ideal since I’m relocating on very short notice, but unfurnished is completely fine too.
For those familiar with OU, what are the best off-campus apartment communities around campus? Ideally, I’d like somewhere within roughly a 10–20 minute drive of Troy, safe, reasonably priced, and well managed.
I’d especially appreciate specific apartment names, places with immediate availability, subleases or lease takeovers, or places I should avoid.
Thank you!!

Need apartment recommendations near Troy (starting work Monday)

Hi everyone!

I’m relocating to the Troy area next week for a new job and am completely new to the area, so I’d really appreciate some local advice.

I’m in my early 20s and I’m looking for a place with about a 10–20 minute commute to my office in Troy, although I’d be perfectly happy living in Troy or any nearby area with a reasonable commute.

Ideally, I’m looking for a 1-bedroom or studio, but I’m also open to shared housing if it’s through an apartment community that offers a roommate matching program. I’m just not looking to find roommates on my own.

My priorities are:
Safe neighborhood
Good management
Budget up to around $1,500/month
Basic gym
Nice parks or running trails nearby

A furnished apartment would definitely be a bonus since I’m relocating, but it’s not a requirement.

If you were moving to the area today, where would you choose to live? I’d also love recommendations for apartment communities with good management, as well as any places I should avoid.

Thanks so much!
