Why do I keep landing a Stalemate? How do I prevent a stalemate?

I'm new to chess, and for whatever reason every game I have that I don't get destroyed in ends in a draw. I already know what stalemate is, so that's not my question. I just want to know what tactics to use to avoid situations like this.
