This Seems Like A Solo Hobby For Me-- How Do I Do It Safely?

A few friends and I went rafting three times this summer. We all had fun, and I want to get my own IK, but my friends don't. That's totally fine. I just don't have any whitewater friends. I want to get training next May and kayak down the Main Payette in Idaho. I also want to go down the Lochsa River in Northern Idaho- but my friends aren't interested, so I might just end up doing that alone through an outfitter.

If I'm not going with friends, what do I do? I'm going to end up doing it solo, which doesn't sound safe; so do I tag along with groups? I'm not in any clubs or anything. I also don't know how to shuttle myself to a put-in if I'm alone. What do I do?

Interaction with AIRE, and a kayak recommendation (and questions)

I don't know if this is applicable to this sub, but I had a great interaction with someone from AIRE. It's awesome how enthusiastic and helpful everyone is in this sport. I told the gentleman on the phone that I was interested in saving up for a couple of kayaks. He was genuinely excited to hear about the trips I've gone on this year, and he answered a lot of my questions-- we spoke for a while. Wonderful interaction. But that's not the main reason why I'm writing this.

He recommended the Tater for my first inflatable, as I told him I wanted some wiggle room and to put a thwart and foot rest in it. I also told him that I was interested in an outfitter after I finished graduate school, and he actually recommended the Lynx. He said that the Lynx is a more "sporty" kayak, and that it's very popular. He told me I'd enjoy it more and grow with it as a kayaker.

I'm not familiar with inflatable kayaks, but the Lynx and Outfitter look similar. I know the differences on paper, but how exactly does the Lynx feel more sporty? Do any of you have experience with either boat? What are your thoughts? I really appreciated my interaction with AIRE-- it was great!

High Float or Low Profile PFD?

Howdy. Sorry for all the posts, recently. I'm wanting to buy gear over the next few months before I can get training next May. I think I'll get an Aire Tater!

The thing is, I can't decide between the NRS Ninja, or the Big Water Guide PFD. I know the Big Water is Coast Guard certified. But I want to have something that I could EVENTUALLY use in class 4 rapids once I get the experience and a different boat, like the Aire Outfitter.

Is the Big Water overkill? Do you run the Ninja in class 4 rapids? I know that my favorite outfitter doesn't let you bring your own PFD unless it's Coast Guard certified. What do you think?

Does Anyone Remember The Demo Disc?

I remember before the Wii was released (I sound old lol), our family got some kind of demo disc from Best Buy. It was just a bunch of trailers for games on the Wii. It had a trailer for Twilight Princess, some weird Rayman game that included slapping rabbits, and Open Season...? Anyone else remember that?

How Do I Meet More People...?

I've gone rafting three times this year through the same rafting company along the Payette River in Idaho. Unfortunately I live three hours away in an area with hardly any whitewater- just lots of flat water along the Snake River.

I thought that maybe next year I could do it frequently enough to meet people, maybe even find a significant other who's into whitewater (LOL don't know how realistic that is). It would just be cool to make friends that would like to do it as much as I want to.

I took friends with me on those three trips, and while they enjoyed it, no one really wants to get gear and training-- only stick to guided trips. Fair enough, but I want to mingle with some real junkies!

Tried Class 4 Yesterday, I'm Hooked. Any Guided Trip Reccomendations in Idaho?

Went on the South Fork of the Payette River (Class 4) in Idaho yesterday-- that was awesome. Now I want something crazier. What is your favorite whitewater in Idaho to go on a guided rafting trip on? I hear that the Lochsa River is incredible!

I Want To Gain Weight, But Food Isn't Reinforcing???

Hi! I'm twenty-eight years old, male, and I've struggled with restrictive eating since I was in elementary school. I am wanting to start working out for muscle definition- but eating enough is pretty difficult. I work full time and am in grad school full time as well, but I just don't have a drive to eat. I can eat what I think is really delicious food-- and it doesn't feel reinforcing. I don't eat because I WANT to, I eat because I HAVE to, if that makes sense.

The best way I can put it is that food is fuel. I'm going to see my dietician in September, mostly to see what my behaviors should look like, such as eating X number of times per day and so on. Does anyone else feel the same way with food not being all that reinforcing?

How Do I Get Over This Regret?

Disclaimer: Even though I'm religious- I'm open to all input and advice. I hope it's not an issue.

28m, never dated. I've tried- just hasn't happened. Never been intimate with anyone. I'm Christian and want to wait for marriage. You can call it cope-- it partially is, honestly. The worst part is family and friends can say some stuff that cuts deep. Recently, a female coworker said "you're missing out on the best sex of your life. After 30, it's going to start to suck."

I admit that it hurt to hear that, especially since that coworker has never said anything mean like that. I don't like those comments. But now I am thinking "I'm missing out on sex."

I can't really ask anyone I know for advice on this because I don't get a practical answer. I get a "stop being a loser," or a biblical answer, of course. That's not bad- I just need a new way to think. I am doing good in life. I work with plenty of people, go to church, and am in grad school. Again, it just hasn't happened. But it's hitting my core. Am I really missing out on intimacy, that's just going to get worse the longer I'm alone? I'm open to any perspective.

I'm Giving Up Relationships to God- and I'm Happy!

28m, never dated. I longed to be married. I tried, but it really worked out. I tried dating apps (including Christian dating apps) on and off for ten years, and I never met anyone from an app.

I stayed in the Word. I have prayed for marriage since 2022. HOWEVER! Some good news: a lot of the suffering I had came from the world- the expectations others had, seeing relationships, etc. I finally gave up and said "Lord, if you want me to be married- you'll have to do it yourself, because I suck at this!" XD

I deleted all my dating apps and have stopped putting so much thought into it. Yes, I still long for marriage, and I still pray, but I leave it up to God. I've had a blessed year- and I'm growing closer to Jesus. I think God absolutely does not want me in a relationship, and I'm going to trust Him. That doesn't mean I no longer desire it-- I do! But I include God in that feeling, and I let Him know I still want it.

But I'm no longer depressed about it. I feel... fine! I'm just working on trusting Him. If He wants me to get married someday, it's up to Him. If I'm not meant for marriage, I'll rely on Him to carry me. I can say that the dating apps made me feel horrible. Holy, Upward, Christian Mingle-- they're all so... worldly. If they've worked for you-- wonderful! But for me, it's entirely up to God. In the meantime: I will finish grad school, work out, and grow closer to Him.

Early Game Ammo? (New Vegas)

I'm going to start a playthrough and get This Machine early. The only issue is that I can't think of a reliable spot to get a lot of 308 ammo early. The only merchants I know that carry a lot of ammo are the Khan's armory, and Bardon at Hoover Dam. Is there anywhere else that has a significant amount? All other merchants don't carry all that much.

Were There Any Groups Who Survived The War Not Using Vaults and Escaping Mutation?

I haven't jumped too deep into lore, but we're survivors who repopulated America exclusively vault dwellers, or did anyone survive the War not using vaults, and did not get irritated? I know the Enclave utilized the oil rig, but what about normal civilians?

How Do You Do Research For A Trip?

Hi! I saw an awesome video of someone going through the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Central Idaho! That is a dream trip! I noticed that the kayaker knew specific rapids, how to go through them, where the camping spots were, and where hot springs were located. It was awesome.

How exactly do you research a run before you get there? I'm assuming people download maps for their phones, but how do you do research in a run that may be new to you? What resources do you utilize?

Strength Training For Whitewater?

Hi. Sorry for so many posts so frequently, but while I'm in grad school, I want to go to the gym and get ready for the 2027 season. Aside from cardio, what strength exercises do you suggest I focus on? I can say that swimming wears me out to no end, and I don't have the strength to pull myself back into a raft, my guide had to pull me in.

I haven't been in the gym in a while, but I had some shoulder stuff that my physical therapist showed me how to work on, so I'll get back into it. Thank you for your input!

Very Stupid Question About Beginner Gear (IK)

In grad school and working additional hours to save up for gear. I want to save, then get training May 2027. I'm hoping to get enough PTO to take off a week or two, camp and get training, then run the Main Payette in Idaho (Class II and III) over and over again. Here's what I'm thinking:

Aire Spud

Paddle (open to suggestion)

Helmet

PFD (open to suggestion)

The tricky part: Do I skip a wetsuit and just save up for a dry suit? I made a post a few weeks ago and a few of you said how much of a difference a drysuit made for you guys. I Also don't know which drysuit would be good. I'm 6'1 and 145lbs. I Also don't know what to wear underneath a drysuit. Merino wool or synthetic? Thank you! I also am going to go on a trip down the South Fork of the Payette in August!

My Latest Trip, and Clothing Stuff (Class III)

Went with four friends along the Main Payette in Idaho, yesterday. We decided to go along on the same trip because it was two of us our first time, and we wanted to ease the others into it. Super fun stuff. We want to do the class IV trip next month. I had a few thoughts.

I was wearing a polyester shirt, polyester shorts, and it was 94 degrees F(reedom). I still got cold, but a wetsuit would have been overkill. Maybe I'll wear a polyester long sleeve and leggings for sun protection? Also, I was wearing swimming goggles, and not only did they not fit well and were uncomfortable, but the water also flooded them. My guide had what looked like ski goggles on. I'm just trying to keep the splashing water out of my eyes. What do you think?

I Suck At This Game (Vanilla), How Do I Get Better? ('Crons)

Been playing Dawn of War on and off for what-- fifteen years? Just got the Definitive Edition the other day. I've watched a couple videos, but I feel like I'm just not fast enough with build order. I fight against friends and my brother. I have a really bad habit of turtling, but am trying to stop.

Another issue I have is that I feel like I'm not understanding how to be good with Necrons after T3-- I feel like the destroyers are so weak. The troops are beefy, but slow. I got absolutely obliterated by a friend's Green Tide and I got demolished. If anyone has any pointers, or wouldn't mind letting me spectate on a match and teaching me, please DM me. Should I maybe change armies?

As A College Student In School- How Do I Apply Debt Reducing Habits and Methods?

Howdy! I'm new to The Money Guy show. Before this, I was aware of Ramsey's Debt Snowball and Seven Steps. My question is: as a college student currently in grad school, how do I tackle debt now if I 1. don't have the career (counseling) I am looking to get into and currently don't make a whole lot and 2. am watching the student debt I have grow as I take out more loans before I graduate?

Between undergrad and grad school, I was paying off my student loans for about 3 years. Since school has started, I'm working less to accommodate my full-time schedule, and I'm still taking out loans while not currently making payments. I only make $19 an hour and I'm working 40 hours over the summer, but 32 hours during the school year. I have two years left.

I will say this: whenever I get reimbursed by my school after the loan is approved and the classes are paid- I immediately pay back the loans with the money I receive. I am only using loans to pay for classes. Not books, bills, ect. What do I do?

Compact SUV? Or Larger Vehicle?

Hi! I'm currently saving up to buy an older CR-V or RAV-4 (no CVT). The problem is that The CRV only has a max tow weight of 1,500 lb. I looked around a bit, and there's really not much in terms of campers that weigh less than that. I wouldn't need anything fancy, I just need a bed and a shower (outdoor shower works fine). From what I've seen so far, there aren't very many options at all under that weight.

I like the idea of a compact SUV for the slightly better gas mileage, but do you think I should save up for something like a 4Runner, even though I would only be pulling around a camper a couple times a year if that? Or is there something that I'm missing. I enjoy tent camping, but I'm getting to the point where having a camper and a shower would be nice.

why do companies and organizations keep employees who piss everyone off???

What is even the point of keeping an employee like that? We have an employee where I work who everyone complains about, isn't productive, and makes everyone upset. They are confrontational, always moody, and aren't even great at their job. I work at a hospital, and a charge nurse we have is the literal worst. They will text you disrespectful things, are rude to doctors and techs, and management knows how bad this person is.

What's the deal? Are companies aching for people that bad? It would make sense if someone is a jerk, but they are amazing at their job. Our charge nurse doesn't even know what they're doing. I don't work specific days anymore specifically because this person is that much of a pain. One of our "core values," is compassion-- which this person lacks. What the heck?
