Thought my PS5 controller was dead forever… turned out the charging issue was way more annoying than I expected

A few days ago my PS5 controller randomly stopped charging and I genuinely thought the battery was cooked. I plugged it in after gaming, came back later, and it was still sitting at 1 bar. Then the battery icon started showing that weird little question mark thing and the controller would only charge if I held the cable at a certain angle like it was some ancient phone charger from 2012.

At first I blamed the controller itself because the cable still charged my headset fine, but then I noticed the front USB port on the PS5 was acting weird too. Tried the back port and suddenly it started charging for like 10 minutes before disconnecting again. That sent me down a full rabbit hole trying to figure out if the problem was the console, the cable, the controller port, the battery, or some software bug.

I ended up trying basically everything people suggest online. Different USB-C cable, different USB ports, charging from a wall adapter instead of the console, even charging through a power strip USB slot just to test it. Weirdly enough, some cables would connect the controller but not actually charge it. Another cable worked but only while the PS5 was fully on. In Rest Mode it just stopped getting power completely.

Then I found out there’s an actual setting buried in the PS5 menus that controls whether USB ports stay powered during Rest Mode. Mine was apparently set too low somehow, so the controller would barely charge while the console slept. Changed that and it helped a bit, but the controller still kept disconnecting randomly.

The thing that REALLY surprised me was how much dust and tiny debris can get stuck inside the controller charging port. I looked inside with my phone flashlight and there was compacted lint jammed in there. Carefully cleaned it out with a toothpick and compressed air and suddenly the cable clicked in properly again instead of wobbling around.

I also did the little hard reset thing on the back of the controller with a paperclip because apparently these controllers can just bug out firmware-wise. Didn’t even know that reset button existed until now. After holding it for a few seconds and reconnecting it to the PS5, the charging became way more consistent.

Right now it’s mostly fixed, but honestly this whole thing made me realize how annoying it is trying to diagnose charging issues because literally every part of the setup can fail in similar ways. Bad cable, weak USB port, dirty connector, dead battery, broken charging IC, weird Rest Mode settings, firmware glitch… they all look almost identical at first.

The most confusing part was that the controller still worked perfectly while plugged in, but died instantly the second I unplugged it. That made me think the battery was fully dead, but apparently a bad charging connection can cause the exact same symptom.

I’m curious how many people here had this happen and what the actual fix ended up being for you. Also wondering if using normal phone wall chargers long term is safe because I’ve seen people argue about voltage stuff nonstop. Some people say any basic 5V charger is fine, others act like you’ll fry the controller instantly.

And honestly if this dies again I might just send it in for repair because these controllers are way too expensive to keep replacing every year.

GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, but a new comment from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick suggests Rockstar’s original internal target may have been much earlier than fans realized.

In an interview about his career, Zelnick said GTA 6 is “about 18 months behind the original date,” which points to an internal plan that may have aimed for early 2025, possibly months before the public fall 2025 window that was first announced.

The game has already gone through multiple delays, first moving from fall 2025 to May 2026, then from May to November 2026. Even so, Zelnick has repeatedly defended giving Rockstar the time it needs, saying Take-Two wants to provide its teams with the financial and human resources required to reach “perfection.” That word carries a lot of weight here, because GTA 6 is not just another big release. It is widely treated as the most anticipated game in the industry, with expectations so high that even pricing has become a major debate.

Reports have claimed Take-Two may have spent between $1 billion and $1.5 billion on GTA 6 so far, though Zelnick has only confirmed that the game was “expensive.” For comparison, many major AAA budgets sit in the hundreds of millions, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War reportedly cost around $700 million across its life cycle. Despite the long wait, Zelnick sounded confident about the current date when asked about uncertainty around launch, simply saying, “November 19, I know. It was announced.” Do you think Rockstar’s pursuit of perfection will make GTA 6 worth the wait?

Prices are going up again. Glad I play multiplayer on PC. Gabe would never charge a fee for online multiplayer.

Sony PlayStation Network accounts are being stolen very easily right now, even with extra security like 2FA or a passkey.

The problem is not stolen passwords or a big data leak, but attackers who call or chat with PlayStation Support and trick the team using just your public PlayStation username and one old payment detail, such as the last four digits of a card or an old order number.

Once successful, they can change your email, turn off security, reset your password, and lock you out.

This has happened to normal players and famous ones too

Sony has known about this for months but has not fixed it yet.

To protect your account:

  • hide your PlayStation username from social media bios and pictures
  • remove saved payment cards or use virtual cards with low limits
  • check your account often for new sign-ins

What video game deserved Way More Hype??

For me, it's Days Gone.

Not sure I’d call it more hype. It’s more that people finally started acknowledging it was a great game that deserved a sequel.

When GameStop officially closes down. You're all going to miss it.

I know people love clowning on GameStop now, but the day those stores officially disappear is going to feel weird as hell.

Yeah, the prices were sometimes trash. Yeah, the trade-in values were borderline insulting. And yeah, half the employees looked dead inside after dealing with screaming parents and sweaty dudes arguing about frame rates all day. But honestly? GameStop was part of gaming culture for a lot of us.

There was something special about walking into a store packed wall-to-wall with game cases, posters, random collectibles, and that loud-ass “coming soon” trailer playing on the TV above the counter. Midnight launches actually felt exciting back then. You’d stand in line with strangers talking about games for hours like you all knew each other.

Now everything is digital. Preload. Download. Done. Convenient? Sure. But soulless.

Kids growing up now probably won’t understand the feeling of saving money for weeks just to walk into GameStop and finally grab the game you’ve been obsessing over. Or spending 45 minutes browsing even when you had no money at all.

People keep saying “who cares, just buy online,” but when the last GameStop closes, a lot of you are gonna realize you didn’t just lose a store. You lost one of the last real gaming hangout spots.
