Wind Waker HD now runs natively on PS5 - bring your own copy

I've ported The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD to jailbroken PS5s. It's a static recompilation of the Wii U game, not an emulator, built on ZeldaWWHDRecomp and rendering through Vulkan on the PS5's GPU.

There's no game in the download. You get a small builder kit (34 MB), point it at your own dump, and it builds the title for you with one command. It takes 15 to 60 minutes, then you FTP the folder to your PS5.

- 3x internal resolution

- DualSense button prompts

- Sound, saves and save states working

- 30-60 fps in the open world, 60 in menus and lighter scenes

Only the first island and the USA disc have been tested so far, so I'd love testers: tell me how far you get and what breaks.

**Download and instructions:** https://github.com/griches/PS5_WindWakerHD/releases

Thanks to ZeldaWWHDRecomp, and to Mihawk for the PS5 Vulkan stack.

Please don't share built copies. Build it from your own disc.

Quake III Arena on PS5 - a native port of Quake3e using Vulkan (open source)

I wanted Quake 3 on the PS5, - I absolutely love the game. I saw Mihawk's PS5 Vulkan stack on GitHub so thought I'd have a go. Quake3e already had a Vulkan renderer so it was the one to go for.

- Single player, local network and online server browser

- 4K, 1440p or 1080p, picked from the graphics menu

- DualSense controls, with every button rebindable in the controls menu and separate horizontal and vertical look sensitivity

- The PS5's on-screen keyboard for your name, server addresses and chat

- Show FPS toggle in the graphics menu

You need your own game data. pak0.pk3 comes from a copy of Quake III Arena you own (Steam, GOG or the CD) and pak1 to pak8 are id's free 1.32 point release. The README has the links and the install steps. Nothing from id or Sony is included.

I've only been able to test on my own console, at 4K on a 60Hz display. 120Hz is untested, so I'd appreciate hearing how it runs for you, with your model and firmware.

Repo and v1.0.0 download: https://github.com/griches/PS5_Quake3e

I'm adding it to the Prospero store as well, so it should show up there once it's been reviewed.

Huge thanks to Mihawk for the Vulkan stack and template, and to the Quake3e and ioquake3 folks.

If you have any issues or feature requests then please just let me know.

Samsung Smart TV owners + Stream Deck... Testers needed

I already have Smart Remote+ for LG TV on the Marketplace and a few people asked for a Samsung version.

I built my Samsung TV control library whilst I was on holiday earlier in the year and had access to a Samsung TV, but I no longer have access so haven't been able to test the Stream Deck implementation.

It talks to the TV directly over your local network. No cloud or account/SmartThings.

It does:

- Power toggle, plus separate Power On and Power Off

- Volume up / down (hold to repeat) and mute

- Volume dial on the Stream Deck + that shows the TV's actual level

- Navigation dial - turn for up/down, press for OK, tap for back, hold for home

- TV status on the + touch strip and the Neo Infobar

- Launch Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, Spotify, Plex, iPlayer and Rakuten

- Play / pause and a remote button key for everything else (d-pad, numbers, channel, colour keys…)

It can't:

Pick a specific HDMI input, turn the screen off, or change picture settings. Samsung just doesn't expose those locally, so they're not in there.

It's built on the same Samsung code as my phone apps, but I've only been able to test the plugin itself against a simulated TV so far, which is why I'm asking before I submit it.

If you have a Samsung TV from 2016 onwards and Stream Deck 7.6 or later, I'd really appreciate you giving it a go:

https://bouncingball.mobi/apps/files/smartremote-samsung-streamdeck-1.zip

Unzip it and double-click the file to install. Add any key, press Scan, then Connect, and select Allow on the TV when it asks. No PIN.

The things I'd most like to know:

- TV model and year

- Does it find the TV and connect?

- Does Power Toggle turn it on from fully off? (You'll need "Power On with Mobile" enabled in the TV's network settings.)

- Does the volume dial show a number, or just a dash?

If power misbehaves, there's a Power troubleshooting section in the power key's settings. Turn on logging, press the key, and paste me the output.

If you have any issues or feature requests then please just let me know. Happy to answer questions.

I made a standalone LG TV remote on the Cheap Yellow Display (ESP32-2432S028)

I built a touchscreen remote for LG webOS TVs on the ESP32-2432S028 "Cheap Yellow Display". It talks to the TV over Wi-Fi using the same WebSocket API LG's phone app uses, so nothing is installed on the TV.

Source (MIT): https://github.com/griches/smart-remote-plus-cyd

Short video: https://youtu.be/lyZZcVjdbX8

Disclosure: I also make Smart Remote+, a paid TV remote app for phones and desktops (https://www.bouncingball.mobi/). This is a port of its LG code.

The firmware is free and doesn't need the app.

Stack: Arduino under PlatformIO with the whole board config as build flags, TFT_eSPI on HSPI, XPT2046_Touchscreen on its own SPI bus, links2004 WebSockets, ArduinoJson 7, NVS for everything persistent. No LVGL: the UI is a 4x3 grid of 64 px RGB565 icons in PROGMEM, drawn straight to the panel with pushImage, so a framebuffer wasn't needed.

The TV side: webOS runs a JSON-over-WebSocket service on port 3001 (TLS, self-signed) with a plain fallback on 3000 for old firmware. You register with a manifest, the TV shows a PIN, you store the client key. D-pad and back/home go over a second "pointer input" WebSocket the TV hands you, so it's two TLS sockets per TV, which is where the RAM goes. Discovery is SSDP M-SEARCH plus a fetch of the UPnP XML for the friendly name. Power isn't a toggle: it asks getPowerState, then sends turnOff or Wake-on-LAN.

All networking is on its own FreeRTOS task on core 0. A TV that is off makes connect() block for seconds, and I didn't want the touch UI to freeze. The UI posts commands to a queue and reads state via atomics.

Happy to answer questions.

Lost my Apple TV. Found it.

I lost an Apple TV in my house and it has been driving me mad.

It’s not connected to a TV or anything, but I could see it on the network.

“Find My” doesn’t work at locating an Apple TV unit, and I didn’t have a controller to check for connectivity.

I built this small terminal app that could look at Wi-Fi debugging data to determine how close it was to the device. I did try wild shark first, but that wasn’t yielding any results.

Every two seconds, it would make a beep sound depending on the proximity, felt like something from Aliens.

Result was good and finally found the device.

If you win and grab the sprite the person dropped you should extract it

Grabbing a sprite off the game winning kill should extract it. You leave the game with it, it should count.

Best app for TV control

I have an app that I make that controls LG TVs with Siri support, Apple Watch and Widgets. I'm currently expanding it to Sony Bravia TVs and I'm having some issues with the different versions and what seems to be supported.

Are there any apps you'd recommend that I can look at to see how they handle certain things?

Online Sprite Tracker

I've been using a very thoughtfully created screenshot from TikTok for marking out which sprites I had collected and which ones I hadn't, but it was getting a bit messy and difficult to maintain so I made this to help people manage their collection.

Would an free app that speaks a description of whatever's currently on your TV screen be useful or a gimmick?

I'm a sighted developer, so I don't know if this is useful.

I've been tinkering with an app and I'm not sure if it's actually worth continuing, so I figured I'd just ask the people who'd know.

The idea is it connects to an LG TV on the same Wi-Fi, grabs a still of whatever's on the screen, and uses the on-device AI on a recent iPhone or Mac to describe it out loud.

Either you press a button when you want a description, or leave it running and it re-describes every X seconds.

I've also got it to lean toward different things depending on what you're doing, reading menu options and which one's selected, the score during sport, that kind of thing.

It exposes Siri shortcuts so you can incorporate the functionality with other apps, or functionality you want to build yourself.

I should be clear about what it isn't: it's describing snapshots, not narrating along with the action, so it's nothing like proper audio description. I was more thinking about all the stuff that has no description at all, live TV, random YouTube, games, and especially fiddly TV menus.

What you'd need is an LG TV and a fairly new iPhone/iPad/Mac with Apple Intelligence on, both on the same Wi-Fi. The AI runs on the device, nothing gets sent anywhere.

If it's close to useful but not quite, what's missing? Is it worth me carrying on with it?

I appreciate your time and input.

I added TPC/GSR auto-dimming control to Smart Remote+

I make an LG TV remote app, Smart Remote+ (iOS/watchOS/Mac/Android) that I know a few of you here use. The update that just shipped has a few things this sub specifically has been asking about for a while, so figured I'd post the details. Appreciate the sub has no advertising, but this is a feature/problem I see being spoken about a fair bit.

You can now toggle TPC and GSR off from the app, the two settings behind the dimming on static scenes / pause screens / game HUDs.

- 2020 models (CX/GX) and newer only, the internal service these calls talk to doesn't exist on older firmware. On older OLEDs it's still the service menu route... the app can open In-Start/Ez-Adjust for you, but you're changing it manually there.

- These settings exist for burn-in protection. The app puts a warning in front of the first disable and there's a one-tap restore. ABL (the full-screen brightness limiter on bright content) is a hardware power limit and nothing can turn that off, this is TPC/GSR only.

The rest of the update:

- Scenes - one-tap presets, e.g. "Movie Night" = HDMI 2 + Filmmaker + OLED light 30 + energy saving off + sound to ARC. Works from widgets/watch/Siri/Shortcuts too.

- Picture & Energy section - sliders for OLED Light/Brightness/Contrast/Colour that show the TV's actual current values (these four are the only keys the TV exposes for reading), plus Energy Saving and TruMotion buttons. Energy Saving → Off also kills the other annoying dimming source.

- Sound Output - TV speakers / ARC / optical / Bluetooth switching from the phone.

- Picture Mode - one-tap presets incl. Filmmaker and the Expert modes.

- The free CLI version also got lgtv dimming off if you'd rather script it (pip install lgtvremote-cli).

The iOS/iPadOS,watchOS and Android versions are out now, with the macOS version still in review. The app is free to use, with a £2.99 lifetime unlock.

Android folks, is there much appetite for controlling your LG TV from an Android watch?

I've got a watchOS app that controls LG TVs from the wrist, volume, pause, navigation, that kind of thing and I'm planning what to build next.

Wondering whether a Wear OS / Galaxy Watch version is worth doing.

Do Android watch owners here ever wish they could mute or pause the TV from their wrist, or is that a niche of a niche?
