How to Game?

Hey everyone. I’m relatively new to Linux in general, ~12months, and I recently switched to NixOS.

My goal is to use NixOS as my daily driver and finally ditch Windows. So far everything is going well; I can install all the programs I need and work just fine. I’d like to game on NixOS, but I can’t seem to sort out how to get my video card to cooperate with it.

I have an Nvidia RTX 4070 Super, and no matter what I’ve tried so far (I won’t share out of complete embarrassment) I still see 0% usage of my GPU on the system monitor.

At this point I need to swallow my pride and ask for help. Can someone point in the right direction? I’d appreciate any advice because I want to stay on NixOS but I’m getting a little frustrated.

Update:

I got it to worked now, but I had to reinstall NixOS and then tried this again.

Why do something so drastic as a reinstall? I had just remembered that there was an error during the initial install. Everything else seemed to work normally so I just moved on and forgot about the error message entirely.

But then weird things kept happening, like warnings about missing dependencies when I tried to add:

```
services.xserver.videoDrivers = [ "nvidia" ];
hardware.nvidia.open = true;
config.boot.kernelPackages.nvidiaPackages.beta;
```

I’m sorry I forgot all about the installing error, but yes this got my GPU to actually engage. And now I can move on and finally try the distro that has fascinated me for months now.

Thank you, everyone for your help.

Like 3D VTTs but think they take too long to set up

I’ve been running TTRPGs on VTTs for the better part of a decade now and I’ve mostly run those games in 3D VTTs.

My experience with 3D VTTs is pretty mixed. Tabletop Simulator (TTS) would be filled with broken links and colliders. TaleSpire (TS) is beautiful and fun, but it takes so long to build what I want. Dungeon Alchemist (DA) is not a VTT, and is stuck in one genre. RPG Engine (RPG-E) is great and so customizable, but I couldn’t quite get my head around the UI.

Enter RPG Stories (RPG-S). There are no broken links to any of the assets. You can create random environments in seconds, and then spend the remaining time tweaking it or other game prepping activities. It is a real VTT with multiplayer and dice rolling. And the UI is less cumbersome.

Obviously these are all opinions based on my own experiences. If you love running games on TTS, TS, RPG-E, I’ll be the first to say you should use what you like. But I’ve seen a lot of posts saying that 3D is just too dang complicated to be worth it. If this describes you, you should really look at this short video going over what RPG-S can already do, and what they plan to add with their latest kickstarter campaign.

I’ve been running World of Darkness, Blades in the Dark, and Cyberpunk Red in RPG-S and I can say it is the best experience I’ve ever had with any VTT.

Hey everyone. For those interested in a 3D VTT, for full play or just map building for a different VTT, RPG Stories is launching a new kickstarter campaign to bring even more features.

Currently you can run almost any game on RPG stories because it is system agnostic. However, this new campaign aims to bring new features like integrated character sheets, even better ST controls, and the ability to make your own procedural generating map tool.

The launch party video will be starting soon. Feel free to check it out and see what you think:

Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I are so excited to be expecting our second child; a baby boy in November. But I’ll admit we are having a harder time coming up with names for a boy than we did with a girl.

So far we like the name Malcolm, but I definitely want some more options. We’re not limited to western names, but we’d like to avoid biblical names or super common names. If the name starts with an “M” sound, or has five letters, that’s even better.

So I am replaying Bloodlines 1 right now, and a nagging question about Requiem comes to mind, because I never kept up with the books.

In Requiem there are no antediluvians, as such. There are just Vampires with higher and lower blood potency, but that’s it, right? And then, at the highest blood potency, they can only drink from other Vampires, which risks blood bonds.

So what solution do higher blood potency Vampires have besides torpor?

Because it sounds like the most powerful Vampires are actually the ones with lower blood potency, that can call on their blood bonded “friends”, with the highest blood potency. Like some kind of twisted Pokemon battle, but with Vampires.

Since Brave launched their new browser, and it’s completely free on Linux, is there a discussion of moving the default browser to Brave Origin?

I’m just trying it out now and it seems to be working great. I’ve used Brave for a couple of years and it is my preferred browser.

Has anyone else tried Brave Origin? It’s still early days for me, but I like it.
