Welfare or Warfare: DSA's Coming Split 🇷🇺🇺🇦
The DSA's largest scope tends to be at the national level at broadest. While they are nominally anti-imperalism, they don't see it as all-encompassing and fundamental as we revolutionary socialists do, but rather an issue down the list of healthcare, education, social services, etc. They aren't ready to be met with the rest of the world saying "We've all had that, big whoop. Now are you going to give us back our gold from the Bank of England or what?" They haven't considered how the Scandanavian model relies on the spoils of Western imperialism, but if they actually want that or is just a deflection from reactionaries is yet to be seen.
DSA is on the right side with regards to Gaza and don't seem to be hawkish towards China, but the one issue that is bound to ruin everything they've (and we) have hoped and worked for is whether to continune to support Ukraine or not. The DSA will likely want try to have it both ways- build the welfare state while poking the bear. The "defense" budget of the U.S. already errodes prosperity at home, and now neoliberal hawks are trying to convince the European public to tighten our belts like here in the U.S. And you know what, it might just work! The U.S. spent 20 years in Afghanistan, the most expensive war in U.S. history, and did not say no to Ukraine 6 months later.
There will be one side of the DSA that says "lets just end this and go home." But the other half that says "Russia is a mindless imperial bulldozer" will find company with the remaining, connected neocons of both parties to continune the waste as well as denounce the anti-imperial faction as communists and foreign agents of Russia.
