those who have beat driving anxiety: how long did it take to get comfy behind the wheel?

i'm 20. i have had anxiety centered around cars for forever. for a long time i couldn't even ride in them as a passenger. i have come a longgg way though, and got my license a year ago and just bought a car.

i am now driving alone, without anyone else in the car, for the first time ever, and it is horrifying. i still dread my drive to work every day and i've been doing it for two weeks now. i always thought the fear and anxiety would go away once i finally did it but it hasn't. for those of you that got through this, how long did it take to finally feel comfortable and calm behind the wheel?

how safe do you find the chevy sonic to be?

hi, i'm 20 years old, looking to finally purchase my first car and begin driving. i have largely avoided it for years due to severe driving anxiety and fear of car accidents.

i am between a 2015 chevy sonic and a 2009 toyota rav 4. i want to pick the sonic because i love how it looks but i'm worried because its more compact than the rav 4.

i've watched the crash tests and looked at the safety ratings and everything but i want personal anecdotes for maximum reassurance lol. those of you that have crashed in this car, how well did it protect you? thank you in advance

edit: thanks for the advice everyone. i ended up going with the rav4 as many of you advised me to LOL.

can someone explain if i'm actually screwed by these new rules?

i'm going into my sophomore year of college. i'm a first generation student so figuring out financial aid is already a struggle for me and my family.

i spent my freshman year at a cheap local university but they don't offer my major so i have to transfer now. well in the process of doing transfer applications i've discovered the COA of every school in my state is 30k or above. i can't afford that at all whatsoever and neither can my parents, so i accepted i was gonna have to take out loans and graduate with debt.

my parents are capped at 20k per year now and i'm capped at 6,500 to my understanding. that's fine, i can probably pay the remaining difference.

but my parents are capped at 65k total? it will take me 4 more years to get my degree. my parents will cap out before i graduate. then what? my only option left is private loans, right? i've heard that you should avoid private loans at all costs. i feel as if i literally just cannot go to college after reading all of this.

seeking advice on starting a DSA chapter from those who have done it

hi guys. i am a dues-paying member but don't make it to many meetings and events because my closest chapter is over an hour away. there is no chapter covering my region in southeast ohio.

i want to start one. i've consulted the pathway on the website to doing so already. i have one issue: i live in a small, predominantly right-wing MAGA-forever city. i have never encountered another socialist in the 20 years i've lived here, even on the nearby college campus.

i apologize if this seems like a silly question but to those of you who have started chapters - particularly under similar circumstances - how did you find enough people interested to get started? how did you grow your number of members? thank you.

how is the engineering program?

hi everyone, i just finished my freshman year and am trying to figure out where to transfer to. i am majoring in civil engineering. OSU was my first choice as it seemed to be the obvious one but i've had a nightmare of a time dealing with them and they have no aid or housing for me. now i'm trying to weigh out my other options, so how do any current or past engineering students feel about the program? is there decent access to scholarships and undergrad research?

also, what's the housing situation like here? can sophomores and juniors live in the dorms if they choose or is space too limited? my biggest dealbreaker with OSU is that i can't live on campus and i don't want to get my hopes up here if it'll be the same LOL.

opinion on 3-2 programs?

hi everyone, i am trying to decide which university in my state to get my degree at. i'm noticing that a lot of them don't offer a traditional 4-year engineering degree, instead they offer a 3-2 program where you get a BA from the university and then attend a more "elite" partner school to get an engineering degree.

this is an interesting idea to me, but i'm unsure if it's any better or worse than just ... doing a normal 4-year program. like, would it make me more employable or less employable, is it just a waste of time? does anyone who has done one of these programs or who is in one currently have any opinion or experience? thank you.

is civil engineering a good option?

i am currently trying to figure out my college major and the career path i want to commit to. i just finished up my freshman year on a pre-engineering track.

i'm very passionate about a few different things. improving transportation across america (railways, subways, bikeways, etc) to transition away from car-dependent society. along with this, improving the walkability of cities and towns. i am also passionate about creating more housing to alleviate homelessness, and creating beautiful and accessible buildings and public spaces. i am also very interested in working in sustainability to help the environment.

essentially my interest in engineering is very intertwined with my "political" views. i think that civil engineering is the most obvious option but what i really want to know is, will i really get to work on these things that i want to? will it be possible for me to find a decent job doing these things with a civil engineering degree? or am i romanticizing this degree/field too much? if anyone has any experience with engineering in these areas, please tell me how you did it and what it's like. thank you

how is OU for engineering?

i am looking to transfer from my current university for my sophomore year. i was going to transfer to OSU, but they told me after i accepted the other that they have no housing left, so i'm trying to weigh my other options.

can anyone let me know their experience with the engineering program at OU? specifically civil but any insight helps. i want to be able to do undergrad research and have access to decent internships and networking. thank you.

off campus housing recs?

hi, i am an incoming sophomore engineering transfer and i was denied on-campus housing. i really cannot afford to pay monthly rent but i have no other options LOL. i have never lived on my own before, i did not live in a dorm my freshman year and just commuted, so i'm incredibly lost. i've learned there is off-campus housing that is still restricted to students only and am looking for one of these options but really i just want whatever is as cheap as possible. can you guys give me any guidance, recommendations, or advice? thank you.

guy offering congo square tour - scam?

currently visiting new orleans with my boyfriend who grew up here. we were hanging out in congo square earlier and this guy introduced himself to us as "creole boogie" and talked to us for a few mins. he was super nice, but then he offered to give us a "tour" of the park for twenty mins. he said it would be free and we could give a small donation at the end if we liked.

i heard a lot about the amount of hustlers/scammers down here before i visited so i was on edge and assumed it was probably some kind of scam and he would get pushy at the end for the money. i lied and told him we'd come back later and that worked. but my boyfriend said he didn't think it was anything malicious. is anyone familiar with this guy or this trick?

i've been pondering the pros and cons of the rise of reselling - specifically secondhand clothing - the past few days.

on one hand, it drives up thrift store prices, it takes clothes from actual low-income shoppers, etc. many resellers significantly overcharge. it's condemned by most leftists i know.

on the other hand, there is no shortage of secondhand clothing in the world, to the extent that roughly 80% ends up in a landfill. when you consider these factors, doesn't reselling prevent more clothes from ending up as environmental waste? and isn't it better to create a secondhand clothing ecosystem in which you can keep recycling items and buy things that put money into another working class human's pocket for rent and groceries rather than a corporation's?

just wondering what others think about it.
