How would you adapt a Keto diet for someone who can't eat greens?

Hi,

I'm now 3 weeks into my keto diet and am over the 'hump'. I'm taking the suggested supplements and that seems to have helped a lot.

I've noticed that a lot of people recommend eating green leafy vegetables like spinach for nutrients. I have a medical issue though that means i'm intolerant to pretty much all of them - including things like broccoli. Right now the only vegetables i'm eating are mushrooms, tomatoes, avocados and cauliflower. I want to add pickles to my diet but I haven't found any low in sugar in the UK yet.

Does anyone have any tips on substitutes?

Carb difference between US and UK food/drink?

I know that this sub is US-centric, and reading some of the general advice I was wondering if there might be differences in carb levels with UK products.

For one thing, you have to be careful with cheap meat in the UK. I picked up a pack of pork sausages in my supermarket and only realised when I got home that they had 5g carb each.

I see advice about not having milk in hot drinks, but it's 4.7g of carbs per 100ml here. A splash of milk in tea/coffee isn't a big deal.

There's advice to eat pickles to help with sodium levels, but the jar I bought has 11g carbs per 100g. Again, ok really if you're having one or two put you'd have to be careful.

Or am I just not looking at this right?

This sub has shifted from amusing piss-taking to toxic obsession

I've enjoyed posting in this sub over the past year or so. Endlessly repeating XFM quotes and collectively shaking our heads at the crap that Ricky has been putting out. It's supposed to be fun remembering the radio show, combined with sadness over the career trajectory of someone we all once loved.

But people have frankly lost their minds since the Alley Cats stuff started up. Binge watching the show the moment it came out just so you could come on here and say how shit it is. People reposting absolutely everything that Ricky says to promote it along with some kind of insult.

Get off the internet for a couple of days. Calm down and enjoy life a bit. Then come back and post about little monkey fellas.

Sick of it.

Why do I have to manually update so many apps?

Hi,

I'm getting increasingly fed up of opening up an app I need, only to find that it requires an update. This then usually means I have to log back in - which means I probably have to reset my password because whatever password holder i'm using refuses to acknowledge that i've ever used that app.

Usually this all happens whilst i'm at a till/checkout/service point and there's an angry queue behind me.

I'm constantly (like, every week) going into the app screen on Google Play and refreshing to see what apps need to be updated. But for some reason the above still happens.

Is there a solution?

Do you see Ricky's 'decline' as understandable?

I agree with like 90% of the criticism that Ricky gets on here. Some of it goes too far, especially those trying to make out he was 'shit' from the start. I still think the guy is naturally funny. But the path he's gone down in the past 15 years or so is depressing.

Yet - it's completely understandable. Imagine being in his shoes with all that fame, money, awards, gushing admiration? How on earth do you stay 'humble' in that scenario? Ricky was always clearly . . well, Ricky. And this is what happens when an egotist is given worldwide validation.

When his career went on a bit of a downturn in the 2010s, he pulled out Brent again. Which causes a rift with Merchant and didn't really work. So, he then decides to jump into 100% self-indulgent comedy where he's basically just being himself with no filter - and the masses loved it. We can all point out how creatively shit it is - but he's basically now the most commercially successful comedian in the UK, if not the world.

I'm not surprised that he doesn't listen to us saucer drinkers.

I need a new phone for around £400-£500. Non-gamer, casual photo taking.

Hi. I'm open to all brands. I would rank my preferences something like:

  1. Screen
  2. Battery Life
  3. Camera
  4. Performance
  5. Build
  6. OS/Updates
  7. Storage

I currently have a Samsung A54. It's pretty good, the camera isn't the best though - i've been comparing photos I took with my Note 9 years ago and they don't come close to the quality. I don't need wireless charging. Is NFC now standard with all phones?

Thanks for any help.

Could someone explain the value of solar energy in my circumstances?

I've kind of ignored the solar issue up until now. Mainly due to having a roofer friend who's very negative about panels as he says it makes the cost of potential repairs extremely high.

But I thought I would look at it today and I got a quote from Octopus:

  • I live in 2 bed terraced house in Yorkshire.
  • I used 1,800 kWh/£600ish of electricity last year.
  • Octopus quoted me about £8.8k for solar installation, with repayments at £114 a month (I guess over 8 years?)
  • They said it would 'save' me about £100 a month (which I assume means them actually paying me for excess energy?)
  • I don't have an EV and have no intention in the future to get one (I'll probably stop driving when my current car becomes uneconomical).

So, am i right in thinking that this is a net cost to me over 8 years, with the added risk that I do actually need to reinstall them if there's a problem with my roof. But then afterwards i'm getting free energy plush maybe £600 a year on top?

Thanks

Are these two separate sets of lights?

https://maps.app.goo.gl/VSZrC9zyTh4SgrLHA

I got a bit lost when out driving the other day and found myself going through this junction. At the time I was genuinely unsure if it was a single set of lights or two. Looking at it again on Google i'm really unsure.

I'm sure i'll get a lot of stick for lack of highway code knowledge. But . . i'm here to learn.

Thanks

Anyone else a fan of this?

I've got the DVD off this and I love it. Not just because of the classic era set list, not just because of Ray Cooper, not just for the snippet of "I heard it the grapevine", but because it's a genuinely interesting window into the Soviet Union at that time.

What preparation should you take to make losing your phone less painful?

I left my mobile on the bus the other day and had a few hours of panic when I realised just how much of my life is tied to it. There's so much you can't do even online without the 2-factor authentication. I got it back, but it made me think of what I can do to prepare for this happening in the future.

I bought a spare sim card from the same mobile operator and have back up phones I could use.

Any other good advice?

There's a scientific theory that's been knocking around for a while that true consciousness/sentience can't be created from a computer programme, no matter how advanced. Rather, self awareness comes from some kind of quantum effect in the neurons in our brain that can't be replicated in code.

This is why Data (edit - and Lore of course) are the only known android with human-level awareness. Noonien Soong didn't simply recreate a human brain in code - he actually built an artificial neural network that is capable of the same quantum thinking.

Whereas, every artificial life form that requires a separate computer to run code is not actually self aware - all they do is mimic self awareness. Including the Doctor.

And that's why it's perfectly fine to make them work in the dilithium mines, steal their creative works and let Commander Riker plough them on a daily basis.

Hi,

I have a 5 year old moggy that I got from the rescue shelter a couple of years ago. I immediately took out pet insurance and i was surprised that it was only £6 a month (now £8). Checking all the details, it seems to cover emergency situations, but might be a bit lacking for on-going costs (which I'm ok with).

I keep hearing horror stories of vets now charging an absolute fortune for fairly minor care/treatment. A relative has spent almost £4k on her (to be fair, elderly) cat in the last year. So, I want to make sure that I'm actually covered should anything happen. I can deal with a hundred pounds here or there, but multiple thousands wouldn't be viable for me.

Obviously i've checked the coverage and it all seems sensible. But does anyone have any tips on what to look out for and what should definitely be included?

Thanks
