Black Forest Ruby Dahlia cut from my garden and grown from seeds
Just stumbled across this sub after posting a pic of my Dahlias grown from seed on another sub. Someone commented that they looked like goth plants! So thought I’d share here too ❤️

I knew nothing about Dahlia’s (or growing plants) when I started in March this year. I bought a packet of Black Forest Ruby seeds and here’s what I’ve got in August. My first cut bouquet from my own garden 😍 They’re not perfect or even close to the beauty of other dahlias I’ve now learned about on this sub. But they’re here and they’re mine! What a labour of love. Can’t wait to grow a whole load of different Dahlia next year 😍 This sub has been amazing, so much advice and encouragement 🧡
Hi all, my child (m21) has returned home for a few weeks after losing his job and jeopardising his ability to stay away at college (no job, no way to pay). He’s embarrassed and ashamed of himself and it’s given him a motivation to change (for now). We have a strict boundary at home that he is welcome unless he uses/drinks. If he does, he leaves. So he’s home with his tail between his legs, withdrawing and emotionally all over the place.
I am grateful for his poor behaviour which resulted in the job loss. I am nervous about how long this will keep him motivated. I’m sure many of you understand the mixed emotions. However, I am finding it really difficult to observe just how warped his thinking is, even when he is sober. In some ways, it’s clearer when he’s sober than not! It’s a tough one to talk about to friends because it’s so difficult to articulate and explain. I suppose, it’s nuanced, and only a parent would pick up on these small things. It’s really is like having a much younger child at home. Does anyone else experience this when their young adult is sober?
Hi all, I came here quite a few weeks ago asking for suggestions on creating a privacy screen using climbing plants (link to original post for ref). I got some great suggestions and will be planting clematis/jasmine at the end of summer. In the meantime, I went with the sweet peas and a mix of nasturtiums, sunflowers and a couple of others. So this is a wee update post to show off my first trellis! It’s coming along great! Thanks for your suggestions everyone!
Hello fellow empty nesters. I have two young adults, one thriving and one who has struggled since he was around 16/17 years old. He’s 21 now and away from home. Things at home are peaceful but my nervous system is still all over the place. Constant worry. I’m having one of those days where I just feel a bit hopeless and can’t see things ever getting better for him. Have any of you had rough years with a young adult child who managed to turn things around? I’d love to hear something positive to ease my aching heart. 🧡
Hello! I (40s f) am a former competitive pool swimmer who’s been back at masters for a couple of years now. I live in a beautiful part of Scotland and am taking the plunge next week with a local open water group. I have a wetsuit but can’t swim effectively in it because it’s too buoyant and restrictive around the shoulder. I need a new wetsuit more suited to open water swimming. Water temp is 13.5 degrees Celsius. Can anyone recommend something that won’t break the bank? I’m think 3mm with as little buoyancy as possible. Many thanks!
I’m in Scotland and it’s been a wet spring/summer! Was starting to wonder if I’d ever see a bloom. The sun came out and voila! So did the flowers. First time dahlia grower so very happy atm 😁
It may not be much but I’ve finally got a flower! Grown from seed in March on the west coast of Scotland. We’ve been waiting on some sun to work its magic and today I finally have a pretty bloom to admire 😍
I’m crushed. Every morning I check on my plants. Today I found my healthiest and happiest dahlia in pieces. We had very strong winds overnight and my plant was snapped. It had 6 little buds and I was sp excited to see it bloom 😢 just came here to share with people who would understand my 💔 First photo was taken a couple of days ago. The rest are today’s photos of the damage
Tried to ask Reddit and got fucked off. Pals. How do ye fuck the hiccups off? Fuckin dying here buddies
Hello! First timer here from Scotland. I’ve grown a lot of dahlia from seed this year. I’ve posted two photos; one is doing great and the other has yellow leaves and looks to be struggling. They were potted in similar size pots at the same time and looked almost identical at that point. They sit next to another so they are experiencing the same weather conditions which, in fairness, has been mostly rain! I’m excited to see what I get from the first one but not sure what to do to help the other along. Any ideas from you dahlia enthusiasts? Also, when should I expect blooms?! TIA!
Edited to identify: Black Forest Ruby
Got to take ma lassie for her ‘prom’ dress tomorrow and I’ve no idea where to start! Can anyone give me some ideas for shops? So far I’m thinking Frasers and Debenhams but don’t know if they’ll cater for current teenage trends.
Hello! I’m a first time dahlia grower from seed. I’ve been hardening these off for two weeks. They’re out all day and still in at night atm because it’s been very cold here still. I’ve pinched the tops off because they were getting leggy and had three sets of true leaves. But I don’t know what to do with them now? They don’t look as robust as other seedlings I’m seeing on here. Will they be ready to be planted soon? Do they need planting up again before they go out? Any advice very welcome!
Husband and I are nearly 11 years together, the big D-day which was porn related was around 3.5 years ago. There were many smaller d-days in the preceding years and a problematic sex life - he wasn’t interested and eventually experienced PE and impotence as a very fit and healthy mid 30s guy. I felt so confused and hurt in those years until I discovered what was going on in secret.
He went for therapy, got an accountability app, disclosed the issue to his parents and read numerous books about PA. To my knowledge he hasn’t accessed porn since. He’s never had social media which is a blessing. A few weeks ago we were out and he blatantly ogled an attractive woman. I’ve never caught him doing anything like that before and it sent me in to a tail spin.
After D-day we started to figure out an intimate life together and things improved greatly for a while. But now that I’ve started to think about it, our sex life has become non-existent again. Life got in the way and I didn’t notice! So I’m reeling. We talked about it last night and he blamed the big stresses we had last year for getting in the way. I don’t buy it. There was always an excuse in the past.
He’s a good man and husband with an obvious caveat. He’s affectionate, kind, hardworking, considerate, full of life and pro-active. He has a rational understanding why ogling and porn are bad and can verbalise them with emotion. He feels ashamed but is starting to talk about fundamental differences between men and women. He is asking whether I have ever ogled, do my friends ogle men etc. Do I get turned on at the sight of a man’s body. Why do men like body parts and women seem to prefer connection. He seems to be working towards a view that men are biologically hardwired to be perverts (sorry, couldn’t help having a pop there).
My senses are tingling. Something isn’t right and I think I’m missing something. Wondering if he is simply white knuckling this now? Ogling is new, is this the new outlet for him now? He can’t look online now so will look in real life?
Ps Does anyone else get sick of hearing about their husbands male friends and colleagues and how normal it is for ALL of them to watch porn and ogle women? Makes me sick to my stomach.
Hello! Beginner gardener here. I have a trellis separating two spaces and would like to create a bit of privacy between them by planting something to grow upwards. Can you help with suggestions please? The planter boxes are about 1.3 metres wide each. Many thanks!
