Just finished A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by Joyce. Most connected I’ve ever felt with a novel, and I’m forcing myself to save some Joyce for the future rather than rush through his works. Currently reading the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.
I watch a lot of Scorsese, Lynch, Tarantino, Kubrick… I’ve seen most Nolan even though I don’t even like him much. I’m more of a reader and my reading profile is much more emotional, reflective and thoughtful. I would like to see more movies along those lines. I’d also like some noir suggestions. I’ve recently seen The Killing and Sunset Boulevard and loved them.
This was my introduction to Joyce and it might be my favorite novel I’ve ever read, still processing. The story of a young man raised extremely catholic, his discovery of sin followed by his pain and regret, his attempt to reinvent himself as the most perfect child of god imaginable, only to eventually follow his passion for art and its exploration.
This was the most beautifully written book I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to read my next Joyce novel. There were so many parts that felt so extremely relatable to my upbringing and coming to terms with my disbelief in religion. The long descriptions of hell and purgatory were absolutely brutal, and made me actually fear hell for a second despite being an atheist. His descriptions of the discipline of his senses was felt through the pages. His last meaningful conversation with Cranly was incredible, and so much more than I expected. I can go on and on but I’d love to hear what anyone else feels about this book, or what parts stuck out to you.
Just finished surviving and there’s just no one like this guy. You have people performing and doing a horrible job of hiding it (The winner) and you have Brandon performing so god damn perfectly and hilariously, that even though you know he’s being performative, you still enjoy it and kind of almost believe it.
At least that’s how I felt. His absolute meltdown about his time being wasted because they all had idols was hilarious. Watching the cast and crew react to him is hilarious. He makes every production he’s on so much better and even if he’s fucking around he still genuinely cares and tries unlike a lot of these oafs.
Also it was my first Kubrick, for some odd reason.
I’ve mainly only used ChatGpt for my AI needs. I know their image creating has gotten better over time but now if I buy the $20 subscription don’t I still have limits? What’s the best thing for me to use to pump out 30-50 images in one sitting? Ironically I asked ChatGPT this but I didn’t consider the answer very helpful
When I start the console it takes FOREVER to fully connect to the internet. Like it will say I’m online but if I try to play a game it says I don’t own it. I’m talking maybe 5 minutes. When i click on games they don’t start. I will click over and over until minutes later they will launch. Sometimes if I launch an app like Peacock it will cause the game to immediately launch but not always. When I go to install apps the download will freeze at 0% for 30 mins or so and then finally start. Everything is slow, everything feels broken. I don’t want to pay for a series X at this point with price hikes. Has anyone experienced similar problems and know any fixes? AI tells me stupid things like hard reset but nothing I haven’t tried.
For example, no Scorcese I’ve seen em all. I’m working on Lynch so I don’t need any of his stuff. If it’s a mob movie I’ve probably seen it. I want to expand my horizons
Left are my favorite authors. Right are my special/favorite editions I have found. 99% of these purchased used.
I’ve found answers to most things, and I know Lynch doesn’t speak on the meaning of this movie but some things I have come up with nothing.
When he’s having an affair with the girl in the … tub? When they go under, what’s being represented?
When the cheeks lady has the little babies falling from above, what does this symbolize? I think she represents a figure in heaven that he reaches when he dies at the end, but what’s going on with the babies?
What’s with the pile of dirt and stick that grew in the scene when his head falls off?
These are the main ones I’m not finding answers to. If you have others to share please do because I’m sure I missed some and it’s fun reading interpretations. Greatly enjoyed the film still.
As I’ve explored more and more classic literature, some books I can definitely understand most of what is being portrayed and some books I’m clueless until afterwards.
When I read the Sound and the Fury the first time I was pretty lost and gave up eventually. The second time around I had AI give me a brief idea of the time skips and how the book is presented and it made me love reading it. But for some reason I didnt pick up on that the first time.
I just started A Portrait of the Artists as a Young Man. After about 30 pages I started looking into Lit Charts and the connections to colors and objects leading to time skips/other memories didn’t click with me, even though I knew the colors were significant beforehand.
When I read Metamorphosis by Kafka I quickly thought it was about depression, eventually the novel went away from the direct correlation I had imagined, but then when I finished I read how the novel can be interpreted so many ways which made me absolutely love it.
The first time I read Lonesome Dove, i tried over and over to predict what was going to happen, including Augustus and Cal’s separate endings, and I couldn’t have been more wrong before going and reading what the actual deeper theme of the novel is.
Does this take anything away from you? I know it’s a skill and I know I’m growing as a reader and getting better at it, but sometimes I feel stupid when I think a book is 3/5 until I read about everything I missed afterwards, making it a 5/5. I feel like I’m taking away something from the experience because I couldn’t understand it as I read.
What do you guys think?
