Grizz said goodbye to CKD on Friday

After a 4 year battle with CKD, HCM, hyperthyroidism, high BP and all the associated side effects, Grizz finally said he had enough. We agreed with his diagnosis. So did his vet. He passed on at home, in the backyard, in the sun. His favorite place. With dignity. No more pain, no, no more waiting.

I want to thank this community for all the help they gave Grizz over the years. Other than my vet, this was my main source for questions about these diseases. I really wish the best for all of you and your kitties.

Again thank you

Great explanation on sunbathing birds

As I watched the peculiar behavior of a robin sunbathe this morning, I asked myself, "Exactly what mechanism is working here to clean this bird?" The robin fanned one side of its tail, then stretched one wing. Then proceeded to clean one side of its body. Repeat. This article helped to explain it all.

Timing of medications with tummy meds

Greetings group: I have a cat with HCM and CKD who gets an the occasional upset tummy. I have psyllium fiber, cerenia, and famotidine for treatment based upon the problem ( constipation, nausea, acidic buildup). My question: How many hours before or after his daily medication should I give these tummy medications? Can they or should they be given with food?

Change in rebranded Chewy Cat Clay Litter?

Two cats have used the Chewy Clumping Cat Litter for a long time. Lately the issue is odor control as - there is none! I don't know if this is associated with the rebranding or related to something else - warmer weather, plastic litterboxes, or kitties themselves. I clean regularly and the litter smells right after I put fresh litter in and they use it. Any other experiences like this?

Hey Wildlife and Biologists - identify this shrew

This little guy was captured in my backyard by my cat. He is safe and free. Closest I can get is a Pacific shrew? Help me identify? I think there are a few of them in my backyard under the ferns. So adorable. My identification books are outdated and I don't see any of the shrews on WDFW matching up. All the dead specimens on Burke don't match either.

Leaf or Mason or Both?

Hi everyone - my first LF bee box and things just started past 2 weeks (Mason County WA). I see two bees - one small bee that enters with ease and a larger bee that seems to get stuck. Are they both Leafcutter or is this a late Mason? Look at all the pollen!

How warm can my shed get?

Thinking about putting the houses in my garden shed until October. My garden shed has no windows but it is in the shade. In July and August it can get pretty warm. How warm can the shed get before it's too warm or hot for the bees?

Our small garden doesn't need more compost this year but two of our bins are full. Where do you use your compost other than your garden? What type of soil benefits the most from compost? Anywhere I shouldn't add it? I have a large yard with many shrubs, trees and flowers.

Anyone have Mason bees squeezing into leafcutter tubes? Hilarious to watch. Wondering if the offspring will emerge the right size?
