Could the benefits of magnesium be coincidental?
Magnesium supplements are alkalizing in the body. Could this be why they are of benefit to some despite no apparent presence of a magnesium deficiency?

I've seen an improvement from the inclusion of a bunch of baby broccoli (broccolini or shoots) in my evening meal. I have no idea why. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Is it powerfully anti-oxidant? Is it the soluble v insoluble fibre? Folate? Hoping if I can understand this I might see a big improvement in my associated insomnia.
I often read that you should get up and go to another room and do something, but it is never suggested what. Invariably I end up reading but that feels wrong. The other night I was having a shocker and randomly made breakfast porridge at 4 in the morning. It felt like a better use for my brain and I caught a few hours afterwards. Has anyone else tried baking in the middle of the night? What else can you do in the middle of the night, especially without disturbing others?
After trying everything I stumbled across a reference to folate deficiency by an Australian gastroenterologist and found that it aligned with my daily food/sleep diary. Studies show that low blood folate can cause severe trouble falling asleep.
You routinely see claims that in western countries folate deficiency is rare as it is added to bread products and cereals, but if you don't actually eat a lot of these and or green leafy vegetables you almost certainly are deficient.
Supplements of folate can actually cause insomnia, so try eating eggs (not too many for females, but 6 a day is fine for men), or multiple bananas or a litre of milk in the afternoon and see if this helps you. Spinach is a great source but can cause irritation if taken in large quantities.
After five years of chronic insomnia this is the only thing I have found that helps.
