All black, shoot on sight.

Coming back from a hiatus but I have found in a few sessions that all black means Rat. A couple were randoms, yet the one I had advantage on claimed "no, I have friends who need help" after firing a round in my direction. After stupidly following them they alerted some wasps and hornets then downed me, and got downed by some nearby raiders. So if you dress all black, I'll give you one warning, but attack if you try and get an advantage on me. Won't shoot first, but will shoot last.

The fate of Khan

I am not versed in white scars lore, but upon a discussion with a main, is Khan really just riding through the web way wrecking shop? I mean cool if true.

Tom Clancy: The Irish are fucking *Ninjas?!*

Watching Patriot games and reading Rainbow Six: You think the Irish are fucking Ninjas?! Like that is the greatest threat to western society is Irish Ninjas?! I grew up during that time and other than those two works did I ever for once consider them some sort of fucking ninja paramilitary international terrorist group.

3 things about our solar system that keep me up at night.

  1. Why does Venus rotate retrograde? I have heard both a massive impact that we can't see evidence of because it weirdly might just drop plate sized volumes of itself back into its lithosphere. Or something to do with its atmosphere being so thick. Or both?

  2. Uranus rotates on its side. Again possibly a massive impact?

  3. the Barycenter of Charon and Pluto being outside both bodies, so theoretically anything that got into it with the right velocity would just stay there?

Anyone with more schooling that knows the why, please chime in.

Edit: ty for all the great responses on point #3. I want to respond to them all, but the explanations below map it out far better than I ever could.

The Bud Courtaverse

I've been mocked on this, but I truly belive Dogma solidifies that there is a shared cinematic universe where Bud Court (and Alanis Morset) are god in everything they appear in. In Harold & Maude he is God having to come to terms with being someone who causes death merely through his existence. In Dogma he has to come to terms that despite just wanting a nice existence of playing skeeball and giving his tickets to children, demons still want him dead. And in Life Aquatic he is fully okay with being a bond company stooge who sticks his neck out to help Stevsie accept who he is, and tell Henessy "we uh, fucking stole it man."

Anyway great actor and I love when he pops up. Also H&M makes me cry every fucking time.

Partial /s But needed my terrible action military spec ops fix, and The Rock popped up. Is it possibly the most based Bruckheimer/Bay flick?

Idk why but this rewatch made me think a lot about the base premise. The antagonist is pissed the government is screwing widows out of pensions. But it is because these recon Marines died probably doing some horrendous shit in illegal ops. We see him sympathetically not wanting to slaughter what I can only assume is Seal Team Six (as they specialize in this though it is never stated). We see three different levels of the FBI: Goodspeed who is a nerd and the hero, Paxton as the "bad cop" west coast director who eventually covers for Goodspeed, and Womack who is a huge piece of shit as director. Sean Connery who let's face it, *is* James Bond and all he wants is to get to know his one illegitimate child (hard to belive with Bond) and is dissalusioned with the US. The Airforce general admitting "hey, this Thermite thing we spent a lot of money on probably won't work." And at the end the true bad guys are a bunch of stinted psychopath spec ops just wanting money, and short of that blood. And it ends with a weord mexican standoff of honor vs innocent lives.

The whole thing is preposterous as shit, but doesn't portray anyone with any overall aithority, or in the field command as competent or in control at all. Either way, interesting way to view a weird action movie.

What is the origin of the one lasgun is a flashlight saying?

I remember it as a chaos space marine warning. But it seems to be almost a rallying call, that one lasgun is a flashlight, but a thousand or a million are a force to be reckoned with. How often does this appear in lore. It is one of my favorite sayings as is portrayed in Space Marine 2, one guardsman and a Las gun may be nothing, but you get a group together and you have a force that will move worlds. It is quite against the idea that Astartes are the end all, be all of force. That a common man if synchronized can extrude a force great enough to keep even greater demons at bay. How many times does this appear in lore?

Earthquake?

Just heard a loud bang followed a minute later by house shaking (Cambria) 10:22am. Anyone else?

Edit: Given nothing on USGS (it definitely would have shown up by now), most everyone who heard or felt it being on or near the coast, F-18's doing their thing all morning, and that the right atmospheric conditions (the storm yesterday) can all combine to amplify sound over water, amending body to reflect that this was almost certainly just a sonic boom that natural conditions made extra boom-y.

I heard the jets but may have been mistaken that they were the cause. I can't be certain I heard a flight preceeding it (we are in a flight path after all) and I know I definitely heard them after it, though quite a while after. And just have gotten used to it. A family member who works in town said their whole building shook. There was a meteorite that was reported on the east coast today doing something similar? But I feel like if it was related then somebody would have reported seeing a fireball by now? I do stand by my original assessment that the initial boom did not sound like a sonic boom. I have heard those many times and it sounded off. More like an explosion. Just weird regardless.

Academy E4 and E5, perfection

I grew up on reruns of TOS, on TAS, on TNG, on DS9, and gladly consumed VOY, ENT, the movies and everything after. Academy 4 and 5 brought a flaming shuttlecraft that had no heading and only had one nacelle in for a *PERFECT* landing. I dgaf about "woke" or "DEI" those episodes captured the essence of what the IP can and should be. Taking lore and expanding it out to tell a deeply personal story that resonates on a level few other things do, while scratching the nostalgia itch and bringing to full circle unanswered and perhaps never asked questions in a satisfactory way that combined the old with the new perfectly. The IP isn't supposed to be about what is immediately possible, but what could be, despite all odds. It is the antethema to 40k in the best way possible (being a fan of both). The point of the above rant is Trek is humans if they *don't* abandon hope.

Take from that what you will, flame how you like. I stand firm in this resolve.

Black Stick Men

This is the best description for more or less my only Paranormal encounter, but one that haunts me to thus day. I was 4 or 5 years old, which means it happened in '87 or '88. I remember lying in bed in my first house I lived in where I had my own "room." It wasn't so much a room as a loft in an old converted garage made into an apartment that my grandfather built. There was tapping at my window, which I was immediately puzzled by as you would have needed a ladder to reach it. I tried to look out but just saw all consuming darkness with no light what so ever. I got up and went outside, somehow not waking my parents who had only just fallen asleep (and are *very* light sleepers).

I remember standing in front of one of our old storage sheds we kept random tools and such in, and reaching up to turn the cold old brass knob and climbing in. I wasn't sure of the time, but I distinctly remember the sky being and eerie deep blue above me. Like the exact moment the last even hint of light fades. I remember having to push myself up into the shed as it sat a few feet off the ground. There was no light inside but I could make out the interior just barely. I remember standing for a moment looking around but with the distinct feeling I was being watched.

Eventually I looked up to a portion near the peak of the angled roof where there was a triangular window. And perched inside the glass, not in the window but somehow inside the glass itself, there was a super spindly form of something anthropomoidal, but not human. It was black beyond description. It reflected no light but had the faintest wobble or shimmer at its edges, like a rudely animated figure, but with some sort of oil-on-water esq aura around it (I wish I could describe it better, but even back then I struggled to figure out just what I was seeing and describe it). The best analogy 4 year old me could come up with at the time was I was looking at Grover from Sesame Street, but pitch black and featurless.

It unfolded out of it's perch in the glass and with one gigantic step was directly in my face. I was paralyzed with something more dreadful than even fear. I tried to scream but nothing came out. As it did this its round head started to split open horizontally like a gigantic mouth and a blinding light of every color possible erupted from it in weird geometric patterns I can't really describe (triangles inside triangles spewing circles flashing in a never ending tunnel of color?) And a loud sound filled my head, like a million trumpets playing their lowest register in disharmony. It was a sound I felt more than heard.

I have no idea how much time passed. It felt like an eternity and a moment all at once. When I came to I was standing inside at my front door looking out the glass paynes. The sky was now orange, probably from the distant street lights coming on. I went back to bed, but just didn't feel right for quite awhile.

I tried describing it, but was always dismissed (especially that young). My entire life I had similar moments where I would find myself out wandering around dusk or close to night sometimes and either feel that same sensation, or caught a glimpse of something similar to that figure. I grew up in a quasi rual Forrested area next to a small creek. Deer were present but not common. Plus I knew what they looked like. We did have mountain lions and Coyotes, but they mostly stayed up in the hills.

Every once in a while I still have a moment where I get the feeling it is watching me. I had an horrible moment where someone at a party drugged my drink with something that gave me a similar experience. Except this time the night sky was a vivid green, and there were several of the entities around, and it felt more like I was intruding on their world than they were intruding on ours. It ended with me trying to fall asleep but one of them tapping on my window periodically.

Sometimes I'll have a lucid dream where either I find it, or it finds me. Not in any fantastical dreamscape, just in my bedroom, either at my window or by my bedside. I see it without opening my eyes. It still fills me with that same terror, but over the decades I've learned to fight against it, and even have the semblance of a conversation briefly with it. Not with words, more with feelings. Whatever it is, once I show it that I see it, but overcome my fear, it seems to become flustered and leaves.

Sometimes it does actually show up as someone or something else in dreams and nightmares. But it is pretty easy now to recognize it, call it out, and get rid of it.

I don't even pretend to know what it is, just the cryptid description of black stick man fits it the best. It seems to show up from the fall to the spring mostly, though I can't recall when that original encounter happened.

Anyway, it sounds absolutely and completely insane. And I fully realize and accept that it could be little more than standard human dread and fear, or my mind making up something that isn't there. But that does not make its effects any less real.

Good squash blossom batter and cheese recs?

Got ahold of a couple dozen zuck blossoms. Planning on stuffing with cheese, battering and deep frying. Need a good rec for which cheese to stuff them with and what batter to use. Have pretty much every batter from basic flour to tempura to rice and tapioca on hand. Have some fresg cheese curds (though was planning on poutine with them, and would rather not waste them) but also have access to a good cheese monger that has everything from local to French to mexican cheeses. What is ya'll's go-to for this dish?

Tying to find specific line on Lasguns

There was aa line I saw once on the effectiveness of Lasguns (possibly an Astartes talking to an Astra Militarum?) where one character derides the Lasgun as little more than a flashlight, and the Astra Militarum says something along the lines of "perhaps, but you get ten thousand (or maybe ten million) firing at once..."

Was this from like a book or codex? Or a fever dream?

Techmarine plasma main for Operations advice?

So got the game about a week ago, primaried techmarine bc I'm one of those dirty dirty AdMech fan/fembois. Capped out tonight at my first lvl 25 with all purples (plasma rifle, pistol, shoulder Canon, and a speedy axe). But I've been playing quick play on the two lowest difficulties. Perks are: Omnissian Axe Deflection as I tend to find myself wadding into groups of larger bros, Long-range barrage as I also find myself playing mob control at greater distances, Battlefield Repairs which I am sketchy about as idk which enemies are Majors+ and it seems to not be *too* helpful at lower level, Inexorable Salvo, Augmented Tarantula, and Fortifying Salvo as those seem the best for a more support/mob control role (when the goddamned turrets spawn), And Decap Strategum (again. Questioning how helpful it is at lower level).

Is there a better build I can run at low level Ops, and what is everyone's build for high level? I find my play style meshes pretty well as a TM melting mobs at range, setting up turrets to be a 4th man, and getting in the thick against big bois once in a while. Advice from an elder follower of the Omnissiah would be helpful though before I reset and move up a difficulty level.

Edit: Also, I have never ran across another Techmarine. Are there just none? Or am I playing a class generally considered to be shit?

We need to crowd source an Altar of Celine somewhere in Chicago so that the Wonks have a place to pilgrimage to and lay flowers and gifts in remembrance. Or gather on some anniversary.

Had a box from a year ago and finally got around to getting magnets for it and assembly. Holy *Fuk* was that an ordeal! I admire the complexity and attention to detail AdMech demands but JFC that box is something else! Every step I had to read, re read, and even then missed something. And the kit itself is so infuriating to assemble that I found myself on no less than four occasions. Had one robot sealed up in the chest when I realized I had forgotten to install the protocol chip (feel free to roast me here lore nerds, I forget what they are called). So I had a spare data chip. Thought I would glue that to my datasmith's backpack arm only to discover that due to it's awkward nature of gluing the top fingers, I didn't have room, also the left arm was offset. Pulled off the left arm, cleaned and re oriented and thought fine, I'll put the spare chip in the front arm. Used my tweezers and dropped the chip on my grey carpet, it is now lost to the warp. Decided to prop open the plate on the second robot after figuring out that due to the placement of the legs, which I foolishly didn't check the fit before gluing, that one would be in an upright and motionless state. So that one would be in reset mode as I glued the 2nd chip to the datasmith. The other robotics in a wild running stance so took both the bent "action arms" and attached to that one.

Despite the mistakes I think it adds a touch of comedy and motion to both, as well as the DS. Anyway, I'll post them when finished.

Just out of curiosity, how long does green stuff take to fully set? I messed up the polarity of the magnets and had to test one which pulled the magnet off hours later. I don't want to test again until fully set.
