*(SPOILERS)*
Promising Young Woman (2020) - It’s heavily implied that Cassie lost her best friend Nina to suicide. The word “rape” is never used once in the film but that’s what happened to Nina; she was assaulted after drinking at a party during medical school. Cassie spends her free time “preying” on potential sexual predators, pretending to be drunk and then confronting them about their true intentions. Before the film’s third act, Cassie decides it’s finally time for her to move on after chatting with Nina’s mother. An old colleague from medical school turns up, and informs her that a video was spread around (though she doesn’t use Nina’s name). When Cassie decides to play the video, we the viewers only hear audio. It consists of party music and drunken cheers; you never hear Nina. But based on Cassie’s reaction, it’s horrific, disgusting, and heartbreaking all at once.
Se7en (1995) - A serial killer has been murdering people based on the Seven Deadly Sins. Detectives William Somerset and David Mills finally catch their John Doe, who informs them that the final victims can be found at a location out in the desert. Somerset intervenes a delivery truck, and the driver informs him that he was told to drop off a package. With Mills several yards away, Somerset decides to open the package and, after recovering from his own disbelief, realizes the severity of their situation. We never see what’s in the box. John Doe then tells the younger detective that he stopped by his apartment earlier in the day, and paid his wife a visit. The viewer starts to piece it together, all while Somerset is running towards Mills and begging him to drop his gun. John Doe then reveals to everyone: “I took a souvenir… her pretty head.” (The scene of ‘What’s in the box?’ has been meme’d to hell, but Morgan Freeman’s expression says it all and proves why he’s one hell of an actor.)
Rosemary’s Baby (1968) - After being psychologically tormented by unseen forces, and suspecting that her neighbors are up to no good, Rosemary finally gives birth to her baby. In the film’s climax, Rosemary awakens and demands to see her child. The neighbors don’t stop her (and their nonchalantness confuses Rosemary). Upon pulling back the curtain to her baby’s bassinet, Rosemary goes into shock. We never see the newborn but are instead treated to Mia Farrow screaming the classic line, “What have you done to its eyes?!” The neighbors (now confirmed to be a Satanic cult) tell her this is a time to celebrate, thus revealing that Rosemary had been carrying the Antichrist all along.
Smile (2022) - Kind of cheating with this one, as it’s quite obvious what’s transpiring. After believing that Rose has beaten the demon of a psychological curse, we’re led into a false ending. Joel, a police detective and Rose’s ex-boyfriend, arrives to check on her. She turns around, smiling with a blank stare, and proceeds to set herself on fire. (The entire fight she had with the demon was just another one of its tricks.) Though you can catch a glimpse of Rose burning alive through the reflection of Joel’s eyes, his expression might as well convey what most of the audience was feeling.
