METRO 2039 | Reveal Showcase video from last month
I finally got around to watching the 2039 showcase video that was posted on YouTube last month, and I have to admit, it left me somewhat concerned.
Around the 8-minute mark, the developers mentioned that their original plans for this next chapter changed in 2020, citing the war in Ukraine as a major influence. The showcase also included several nationalist slogans and political remarks, which caught me off guard.
One of the things that made the Metro series so compelling was its atmosphere, storytelling, and connection to the original novels. Historically, a lot of games, movies, and TV adaptations that drifted too far from their source material — especially when modern politics or ideology become a central focus — ended up dividing the audience, and did not do so well.
If the story is going to explore real-world political themes, I hope it approaches them with nuance and fairness rather than presenting only one perspective.
At the end of the day, I still hope the developers remain faithful to the spirit of the original Metro works, and that my concerns ultimately prove unnecessary.
Just my thoughts.
