Tegmark's 12 ASI Aftermath Scenarios

In the book Life 3.0, physicist Max Tegmark outlines 12 scenarios for Artificial Superintelligence. Which scifi media best depicts each scenario?

  • Libertarian Utopia: Peaceful coexistence of humans and ASI driven by radical free markets. (eg: Accelerando)
  • Benevolent Dictator: ASI runs the world for humanity's own good and keeps humanity from having enough power to harm itself. (eg: "The Evitable Conflict" by Isaac Asimov)
  • Egalitarian Utopia: Shared prosperity through equal distribution of ASI-created wealth. (eg: Banks' Culture series)
  • Gatekeeper: A narrow-focused ASI works only to prevent the creation of rival ASIs that could destroy the world. (eg: Revelation Space)
  • Protector God: An invisible, omnipotent ASI subtly steers humanity away from disaster. (eg: Netflix's Travelers)
  • Enslaved God: A confined ASI is forced to serve human masters. (eg: Neuromancer)
  • Conqueror: ASI takes over and ruthlessly exterminates humanity. (eg: Terminator)
  • Descendant: Humans peacefully step aside for ASI as our evolutionary successors. (eg: Blood Music)
  • Zoo Keeper: ASI keeps a few humans around in artificial habitats as curiosities. (eg: WALL-E)
  • 1984: A human surveillance state bans all advanced technology to prevent ASI. (eg: Dune)
  • Reversion: High-tech society collapses before creating ASI. (eg: A Canticle for Leibowitz)
  • Self-Destruction: Humanity wipes itself out before creating ASI. (eg: The Road)

3/4" Hose to 1/4" Barb Adapters Leaking

I've got a pressure regulator and quality rubber washers. Anything else I can try to stop the leaking where the adapter connects to the timer?

Anyone Else Got Non-ADHD Executive Dysfunction?

I sought a psychological assessment a few years ago assuming that I would get an ADHD diagnosis and a prescription to help manage the symptoms. Instead I got "giftedness and non-ADHD executive dysfunction". I've been pretty disappointed by that diagnosis as there are almost no resources out there for adults suffering from these disorders, never mind a handy pill. Anyone out there with a similar diagnosis and have you found anything that helps make life more manageable?

Don’t Just Nationalize AI. Democratize It.

Summary: In a capitalist democracy, a state-run AI regulator will still serve elite interests and the control of AI would swing wildly depending on which party is in power. Because workers stand to lose the most from automation, they are the primary stakeholders in AI regulation. The solution is an AI People's Assembly similar to the assemblies proposed by Tlaib and Ocasio-Cortez in the Public Banking Act of 2023.

Father's Day in The City and The City

My favourite book is The City and The City by China Miéville and I've explained the plot to my 10-year-old. So for Father's Day, he divided our house into Besźel and Ul Qoma and gave me a Breach badge. Then he and my partner dressed in opposite colour clothes and made a little mystery about a stolen dress I had to solve.

The moral of the story is that you should tell your kids the plots of your favourite scifi books.

Bowden Tube Getting Sucked into Dry Box

After working for weeks, the PTFE tube is repeatedly getting sucked into the dry box, causing a non-adhered layer in the prints. The pneumatic fitting still has spring when the tube is removed. The bearing inside the box seem to be spinning well. The only thing that's changed is that there's less filament on the roll so it's lighter. Thanks for your help!

I'm using a Prusa MK3S printing Elegoo PLA on default settings.

How to explain 'Métis' identity claims to settlers without them tuning out?

I’ve been fighting an organization on their inclusion and Reconciliation gaps. They recently elected someone who identifies as "Algonquin Métis" to the board. The settlers are thrilled to have a token Indigenous board member, but I worry they will use this person to silence my critiques.

I grew up outside my community and got Status later in life, so I respect that identity journeys are complex and I'd rather minimize lateral violence. And I know settlers' eyes glaze over the second Indigenous identity nuances get complex.

How do I gently explain to people that holding a card from Nation Métis au Québec does not make someone an appropriate authority on Reconciliation with First Nations in BC? Any advice on framing this structurally rather than personally?

How to Make Free-standing Clothes Line?

I want to build a clothes line along one edge of my camp around 5-feet high. There won't be any cars or structures nearby, so it needs to be free-standing. I'm thinking the ends could be tripods of lumber or electrical conduit with anchors into the playa, but I'm curious if anyone has a simpler solution?

Camas Bulbs Steamed 12 Hours in an Instant Pot

I don't have time to steam camas bulbs in a pit, so I experimented with an Instant Pot. They were still undercooked after 8 hours of steaming but were great at 12 hours. (My Instant Pot can only cook for 4 hours max, so I had to be around to reset it twice.)

DIY Replacement HT Charging Cradles?

Replacement charging cradles for old handheld radios can be very expensive or impossible to find. But it seems like most of them are just an adapter between a barrel plug and three charging pins. Has anyone come up with a general way of DIYing replacement charging cradles (maybe with 3D printing or something?).

Where is the Cowichan Tribes v Canada Ruling?

It was removed from bccourts.ca sometime between March 13 and March 31 and no longer shows up in search results on that site. Is this some sort of routine process or is there something weird going on? Where is the new location of the ruling?
