Black screen/crashes
Hi everyone
Been dealing with intermittent GPU related crashes on my ASUS TUF 3080 (bought used from a miner in 2023). Sometimes it runs stress tests/games fine for hours at 360W+ board power, other times it blackscreens or crashes in less than 2 minutes. PC occasionally won’t boot (GPU lights off) until I do a full power drain.
At first I thought it was a temperature issue since I originally had similar crashing problems when I first got the card (it would quickly hit over 100c and power off.) Since then I’ve repasted around 2 years ago with Arctic MX6 and currently the temps are fine considering my cases airflow with GPU around 70c and hotspot at 80-85c at max load).
Then I reset all my graphics drivers + updated vbios and still have the same issues. I’ve noticed it mostly when playing games such as BeamNG or MSFS 2024 (though it also happens with stuff like kombustor or cinebench gpu tests)
The weird part is it could be running a game perfectly fine for like 15 minutes then you leave and come back 10 mins later and it is crashed (the rgb glitches out, audio glitches sometimes, the display signal is gone, and the pc needs to be fully reset)
Currently I believe (and hope) that the problem is my psu setup not my gpu finally giving up. I’ll admit, I’m running a cheap off brand (Gamemax) 700w power supply that I was able to get from a friend when I had nothing else (the catch is that one of the 8pin pcie connectors on the psu side had melted during its use in mining with a 3080ti connected to it) Now I know how stupid it is to use that power supply but back in that time I didn’t really care as I wanted to just use my pc with the gpu I saved up to buy. Since my 3080 has 2 connectors for power I used the non melted 8 pcie 8pin and for the other one I used a somewhat sketchy cpu eps to dual pcie cable adapter. That ended up being the setup for 2+ years until now when I’m facing these problems.
I’ve provided a picture of gpu z while running msi kombustor and then a picture of earlier today after a crash where the pc would not post and had a gpu light (notice the gpu rgb lights are all off). After another power drain it boots back up but I haven’t tested anything heavy as I want to stop risking it.
