Is my dog just not cut out to be a runner?

I have a 5 year old Goldendoodle that I wanted to have him start running with me as his vet and I believe he has some separation anxiety. I started bringing him with me on runs this spring, but he just doesn’t seem to have the energy for it. They were only 2 mile runs. The last time I ran with him, I was literally having to pull him to keep going as he just wanted to walk the last 1/2 mile. Finally just walked the last 1/4 mile so I thought okay, you clearly don’t want to do this and stopped bringing him with me. I would describe his energy level as either 0 or 100… nothing in between. I take him on walks after I get back from my run, but it’s with my 16.5 year old so it’s a max of 1 mile and very slow, but he acts like he just ran a marathon (or in his case, 2 miles…) when we get home. Lying sprawled out and panting. Meanwhile my 16.5 year old is walking around yet thinking “that was it?” He isn’t overweight and has the tall, lean poodle body. He doesn’t have any health issues, besides maybe the anxiety. I take them for walks in the morning before it gets hot.

This is just so different from my older dog who ran miles with me right from the start without issue. Has anyone had a dog that it took awhile to get them into running? Or is he really just not cut out to be a runner? I’m afraid to force him to do something he doesn’t want to do, but I do know how much running helped with my other dog both physically and mentally.

Previous Native deodorant users: What have you switched to?

I need to restock my deodorant and I’m so bummed Native got rid of their plastic free deodorant. :( Curious as to what others have switched to. Looking for input from people who actually used Native as I had tried a couple other plastic and aluminum free deodorants and they didn’t work as well as Native. Thanks!

Confused on how the disc should be positioned:Leaking on heavy days

I’m on my third cycle with menstrual discs and still can’t get them not to leak right away on my two heaviest days. I can only get a few hours if I’m lucky. My light to medium days are going okay without leaks. When I look up diagrams and videos on how to position it, they are different. Some show the disc angling back and others show it angling forward! Mine definitely angles forward and I know I have it hooked above the public bone as much as I can get it.

I’ve tried 3 different sizes now, 2 different firmness. I’m starting to think maybe my public bone sits too low and it’s sitting too much of an angle causing it to leak out the front. I angle toward my buttocks and can feel it slide back so I really think I have it positioned right and that’s maybe it’s just my anatomy. My only other thought is to try the smallest disc out there, Lumma short, as maybe all of them are just too large. I’ve already spent $75 on these darn things though so I’m afraid even that one isn’t going to work either. 😵‍💫

Worth it?

I hate how expensive Garmin fabric bands are, but I’ve tried some off Amazon (since that’s the only place that seems to sell compatible Garmin bands) and they are such poor quality. I can’t seem to find a fabric band that not dirt cheap but not stupidly expensive either. I have the Venu 3s so it needs to be the 18 mm size. Anyone use the Garmin Quick Release Fabric band and is the additional cost worth it or is the quality similar to the cheaper ones?

Needing a firmer disc

Currently on my second cycle using Lumma discs and I think I need a firmer disc, especially for my heavy days. Has anyone tried these discs and are they firm?

I know these are cheap, but I feel like I’ve already spent an arm and a leg trying cups, discs and reusable pads. 😵‍💫

How long to keep on?

Bought my senior boy Tiger Toes to help with mobility on our hardwood floors. For those who also use them or something similar, do you have them on your dog 24/7? I am thinking about taking them off at night to allow his feet to “breathe”. I’m a little worried his feet will get too warm and he’d develop a yeast or bacterial infection between his toes if I leave them on all the time. Rarely, he does wake up suddenly to poop and will struggle to get up and going quick enough to get out the dog door in time so I do feel like they would be beneficial at night as well. Thanks!

My newest and my retired running partners ❤️

Just started running with Thor this spring and he ran his first 5K today! Albert (2nd photo) is my 16 year old retired running partner who helped me train through multiple half and a couple of full marathons. I retired him from running when he was 10 years old, but take him for an easy walk when I get home from my runs with Thor. He still gets so excited when he sees put on my running gear. ❤️

Well now I’m stumped

I’m on my first cycle, day 4, with my new discs (Lumma large and medium). The first 2.5 days were amazing with it. No leaks whatsoever. Yesterday, it was leaking when I was going to the bathroom, but otherwise it didn’t leak at all. Now today, I am having a lot of leaking when I use the bathroom, but there’s also some in general so now I’m confused at what has changed all of a sudden. It’s happening with both size discs. I’ve noticed that I can get the discs in further than I could those first couple of days so maybe it’s getting pushed in too far now? I was scrolling through threads on this page to try to find an answer and read that “auto dumping” actually isn’t a thing and means the disc isn’t a proper fit? I can handle a little leaking, but I’m worried if I sneeze or laugh hard, it’s going to be catastrophic. 😅 Also, is it normal to have blood on the outside of the disc as well when it’s removed? I’ve been thinking that’s normal since the disc has to fold up again when it comes out so it’s probably just leaking around the disc, but maybe I’m not getting it in the right place after all and it’s falling behind the disc? Just doesn’t seem like there should be that much room to have it “not in the right place”! I have a high cervix. At my last pap, my doctor told me “it’s high and to the right” if that means anything! Thank you!

Only on day 2 and I’m already impressed! Got a question though.

I’m almost 38 and just heard about menstrual discs a month ago. I wish I would have discovered them so much sooner! I tried (multiple!) menstrual cups years ago and could not get those stupid things to work so I gave up and switched to reusable pads as I was trying to be more sustainable. My pads are difficult to travel with so I would use tampons instead, but hated that they aren’t sustainable and they leak easily. I took the quiz from Putacupinit.com and bought the recommended Lumma in both large and medium. The medium is so far working great! I have a very high cervix so I was recommended the large, but I was intimidated by the word “large” and got a medium too. 😅 It’s easy to insert and remove, I’m having no additional cramping, I can go to the bathroom fine and IT’S NOT LEAKING!!! I’m having the complete opposite experience compared to when I tried cups and it’s amazing!

My cycle is the heaviest on the 2nd and 3rd day, so I am wondering if there are any indicators when I need to empty it? Will start leaking?

Thanks for reading!

Menstrual cup vs disc

I tried menstrual cups many years ago but I have a very high cervix and could not get them to work. I tried a couple of different brands and styles but they always leaked bad. I gave up after about 1 year of trying then switched to just reusable pads. They are getting time to be replaced but I came across reusable menstrual discs and I’m wondering if this could be a potential replacement? Or will I most likely just have the same issues I did with the cup? I hate traveling with my usable pads and they are uncomfortable when I work out. Again, I have a very high cervix so looking for opinions for those who have one as well!

Thanks!

Discs for high cervix?

Many years ago, I tried using menstrual cups but could not get them to work as I have a very high cervix. I’ve been using reusable pads which have worked well, but I hate traveling with them and they aren’t the most comfortable. I came across menstrual discs and wondering if these could potentially work for me with my high cervix? If so, what brands do you recommend? Need to be reusable. I’m in the US.

Thanks!!

Joint supplements with Librela shot?

I took my 16 year old boy to the vet earlier this week to address his arthritis. The vet and I decided to trial the Librela shot with as needed carprofen. I know it is too soon to tell if the shot is going to help as the vet said it usually takes 2 shots to see a difference.

For those who have your dog on the Librela shot, I am curious if you are also giving them any sort of joint health supplements? I have been giving him Dasuquin for the past 5 years and the vet is obviously fine with it, but did say that there really isn’t substantial evidence to prove glucosamine helps with joint health. However, for being 16, he is moving around pretty darn well so I really think it has helped! He has never been overweight which I know helps too. I am considering adding in fish oil as I’ve read that can help with inflammation, but forgot to ask the vet about that. Just not sure if it’s necessary with the shot?

He has shown a somewhat significant decline in mobility over the past 6 months or so, but otherwise is a very happy, healthy pup! His blood work is perfect. I just want to give him the best care as he deserves it and I know it’s coming to the point where our time together is limited.❤️

I would love to hear your experience with the Librela shot as well as I’m hoping it really helps him!

Thanks!

Running multiple training days in a row

Hey ladies! Looking for some opinions.

Up until about 7 years ago, I was doing a lot of long distance running. Running 1 to 3 races a year of half marathons and 10K’s and even two full marathons. During this time, I was working an 8-5 job, which made training easy as I could run before or after work. I then changed jobs to working three 12 hour shifts. I changed jobs about halfway through training for my second full marathon and got completely burnt out trying to balance training with my new schedule and just the stress of learning a new job. After that race, I actually stopped running completely for about 2 years. I started running again but just causally with a max of 3 miles.

I would LOVE to run another half marathon, but here’s the concern. The days I work are often clustered together and I would only run on my days off so I would be running 3 days in a row. I currently will do that now, but again, I’m only running 2-3 miles. At my peak training, I could potentially be running 5, 10, 5 or 3, 12, 5 miles in a row (hopefully that makes sense!). I am wondering if thats a bad idea? Or do any of you run longer distances multiple days in a row without issue?

I work 5:30 am to 5:30/6 pm and I’m completely burnt out after work so I wouldn’t have enough energy to run on days I work. I was going to sign up for it last month before the price increased but chickened out. 😅

Thank you!

Edit: Just to clarify, I have a HM plan that I would follow which has me running 4 days a week. It’s just that 3 of those days are going to have to be in a row, which I never did this back when I was running HM’s consistently. I only ran 2 in a row and didn’t run the day before or after my weekly long run.

Thoughts on a hip brace?

Has anyone tried a brace like this to provide more stability in their dog’s hind end? My 16 year old has lost a lot of strength in his hind end due to muscle mass loss. He can still walk well and even jumps up on the couch yet, but he has a hard time just standing still as his hips sink down to the floor quickly, then he has a hard time pulling himself back up.

Are these meant to be on 24/7 or more just for when he is going to be active? Like when I take him on walks or places where he is going to be moving around a lot.

We go camping a lot in the summer and he struggled with mobility last season as he is moving around a lot more than normal. Thinking this may be good to put on him when we are camping.

I’ve had him on daily Dasuquin for the past 5 years, but I am going to call his vet and get him started on a pain medication too for his arthritis.

Thank you!

Possible to gain some strength back? Daily pain meds?

This is my sweet 16 year old boy Albert! As with any old dog, his back end strength is deteriorating quickly. I’m just wondering if there is anything more I can add to his life to help with this?

-I have been giving him daily Dasaquin since he was about 11 years old.

-I switched his diet to Purina Pro Plan Senior about 2 years ago. Mainly because his old food is no longer sold in stores, but the Pro Plan is a little higher in protein and calories. His appetite is great, but he has lost 5 lbs in the last year and I can tell it’s muscle mass in his back legs. I’ve increased his food portion slightly. He has never been overweight.

-He’s always been a very active pup! We used to run long distances together, but I retired him from running around age 10. Now I just take him on short 1 mile walks. We don’t get out much in the winter, but now that it’s starting to finally warm up, hoping to get him out 3-4 days a week again and maybe this will help? He does have a lot of room to roam during the day as we have a dog door that goes into a fenced in area outside.

- I’ve thought about putting him on a daily pain medication but not sure if it’s necessary? I brought it up to the vet but he wanted to do $350+ bloodwork on him first. I get it, but at the same time, he’s 16 years old. I just want him to be comfortable as I know the end is near no matter what. The vet was willing to give him a small supply of pain meds for as needed and I haven’t had to give him many as he doesn’t appear to be in pain. I know dogs are good at hiding pain so maybe it’s worth it?

-He has no troubles walking and can even still jump on to the couch with some good effort and concentration! It’s the worst when he is just standing as his hips fall to the ground pretty quickly. He then can have a hard time getting back up and he has fallen a few times. I do not let him go up and down stairs anymore as he has fallen a couple of times trying to go up them.

-I did ask his vet if there’s anything more I should be doing for him and he just said “just keep doing what you’re doing”, but I’m curious if anyone has other thoughts to help him gain some strength back!

Thank you!
