What does this quote from Gabe really boil down to today
People like to share this quote from Gabe regarding piracy, but what does it actually mean for games if it were to be followed/utilized.
What should a legit purchase of a game provide to make that copy offer a superior experience over a pirated one? Some notable features/services from legit copies include:
- Ease of purchase
- Multiplayer servers
- Free game save cloud storage
- Seamless update installation
- Verifying game file integrity
If studios wanted to provide a service that's better than what pirates are receiving, what do you think should be done? How do we make a singleplayer-only game provide better service than the pirated copy? This quote may have been more relevant in the past years when it was stated, but it's still brought up today as a strong statement alongside events involving DRM, specifically Denuvo.
I understand people will pirate for the sake of being a pirate, so putting that point aside, what does this quote really boil down to today? Should every game have some form of online functionality? I hope I didn't come off as knocking this, as I'm genuinely curious.
