Printing a 16 hour part, and it crapped out at 15 hours!

I was printing a camera part, a rectangular extension tube with connecting arms, and it was looking pretty good when I checked this morning when I woke up. As I was sitting at this computer, I heard a noise that sounded like it came from outside the house and I got up to look, and then thought to check the printer. What I saw was that the Y axis had shifted by about 2 inches and it was now printing in mid-air. It hadn't even done one slice yet like this so I paused it to see if there is something I could do to correct it, but couldn't come up with anything. Does anybody know what I could've done?

I eventually just stopped it thinking I could salvage what I have, but then found that the supports were a mess, and supports are always a mess. I'm rethinking the design so maybe the arms are printed separately and attached, removing the need for the supports. For that matter the prototype for this was done this way but made out of spare parts from the original camera build. I wanted a clean piece. Maybe I'll just clean the prototype up and paint it black.

Lightroom Cloud Catalog folder on a Mac?

After running out of Time Machine space on my Mac, a different issue that I need to resolve, I found this folder and as far as I could tell it has every original file I've put in Lightroom cloud. I thought once I imported to a cloud folder, that was where the file would live, in the Adobe cloud, not my hard drive or external drive. I thought that was the entire point. I can access these pics on my other devices, that appears to work. But what are these files? They appear to be the original imports, as I can see my 4x5 film scans which are done as two passes then merged in LR cloud. I don't see the merged files there. They are in folders arranged by date and have the original names I gave them during scanning. It appears to be every photo I've ever put into LR and it is 125gb of space that I can't explain.

Do I need this? Is this a LR setting that can be changed? What exactly is stored in the cloud then? I'm totally confused, no surprise when dealing with Adobe.

I just checked preferences and the "store a copy of all originals" is unchecked, so why is it doing it?

Swiss Mountains from Pilatus, seven 645 shots stitched together [Fuji GA645zi, Portra 400]

This thing is huge, equivalent to 6x31, but with overlap and crop of course. It isn't quite seamless. Next time I'll lock in the camera settings so they are all taken the same. And it was handheld too. Tripods are for wimps!

My WillTravel 4x5 for 90mm adapted to take a 180mm

I was happy with my WT with the Schneider Super Angulon 90mm f8 on a metal helicoid. Everything is great. When I built it though I found that the focal distance on this lens was too long for the design. Morten offered to send me a design with a longer focal distance but I had already made a 9mm insert that would fit in the frame, with an equivalent 9mm frame extension. All glued together it worked perfectly. I got infinity focus at the stop and could go down to about 1 meter.

But that got me thinking, I could add another extension, this one removable, and with whichever lens I choose I make the extension to be the additional focal distance. I bought a bargain Symmar S 180 f5.6 and the difference in focal distance is 72.5mm from the 90mm lens. So I added that extension. The short answer is it worked! I used some of the original design pieces to create the connectors and the ground glass goes on just like it was on the camera body. The extension itself will fit into the camera body with the same groove as the film holders use. That groove is carried to the rear too so the film holders will snap into it.

The lenses are mounted on their own lens boards which screw into the helicoid just like any other screw mount lenses, and they are aligned so that the controls are where they should be when screwed in tight. I made the lens boards slightly wider than the helicoid so I could screw it in holding the rim.

In the pictures the extension is 3 pieces glued together, but I already have a 3D file that prints it as one piece. I'm still checking the focal distance and want to make sure it is the correct length before I print it. I have a feeling too that the helicoid does not have enough throw to get really close, but that should be easily resolved. What I really need to do is put it on a tripod and take real measurements and then make sure it is light tight. My tripod is currently holding my scanning camera that I meticulously aligned before the camera battery ran out of juice.

Is it worth it over just buying/making a full field camera? Well, it sure was cheap to do this. Other than the 3D filament it cost nothing. It is a bit clumsy, but all field cameras are.

ReflxLab Pro100 samples, WillTravel 4x5, Schneider SA 90 f8.

Some sample photos for a post below since we can't add photos to replies for some reason.

Grand Central is developed in C41 normally

The Chrysler Building is developed in E6. I tried to get the color right but couldn't. The slide itself though looks great even with the off color.

where to buy film in Tokyo, in particular Provia or Velvia?

Am I likely to find either of these in Tokyo now? I'm staying in Shinjuku so I'm near all the stores, but they look overwhelming. Are there one or two in particular to check? I'm not looking for equipment either since I already have more than I can ever use. I plan on buying all my film there as I have little on hand now and it doesn't make sense to buy at home (NYC) to bring it to the film capital of the world.

Need to reprint my WillTravel body.

My WillTravel‘s tripod adapter decided to stop holding in the petg body and the camera fell to the hard ground. it landed on the handle, which cracked off the body without damaging the main part of the camera or the lens. I’ve decided to reprint it and incorporate the items I added on, such as a longer back for my slightly longer lens, and add on some strap loops.

My other thought though is to build a full movements camera, or of course I could do both since filament is cheap. I could try to make a hybrid of the two but not sure how I’d do it.

I could probably have a WillTravel redone in a few days as I have all the parts. It takes a long time to print the body, and I’d have to fumble around with the changes I want in the design software.

Grand Central in color, [WillTravel 4x5, S-K Super Angulon 90mm f8, Reflx Pro100/Aerochrome 2460]. 11sec at f22

I wanted a different angle, directly opposite the flag, but that was a closed part of the restaurant you see upstairs on the right. This was shot from the Apple store.

Abandoned Els. Fuji GA645zi, CS800T

Some pics I took for the NYC railfan crowd. The el on top was abandoned in 1969 I believe, but had to be left standing because it is part of the structure of the operational section below.

TSA and large format film?

I've traveled with 35mm and 120 film and never had an issue with TSA, but how do you travel with large format film? You can't open the holders and you can't open the boxes and neither are immediately recognizable by the average person. We are a niche within a niche and are few and far between. Would TSA know what they were looking at?

13" roll paper for ET-8550?

I've been looking for roll paper to print some of my panoramas. I have a roll of Exhibition Canvas Satin and I've done a few but I think I want a smoother finish. I don't see where Epson has any of the more standard papers in rolls, at least not the ones directly supported for the ET-8550. I like the look of the Velvet Fine Art paper in 13x19 but want something longer. It doesn't look like Hahnemuhle produces any roll paper smaller than 17". I know Keith Cooper has done some roll paper, so I'll look at what he uses. In the meantime, any other sources?

Or maybe I just need a bigger printer? ;>)

Scan of Chrysler Bldg on V600. Aerocolor 2460 cross processed in E6.

A re-scan of my pic from yesterday of Aerocolor as a slide film. The color casts are just too weird for me. It may look OK at first glance but there are a lot of color artifacts, like the reddish stripes along the windows of the Chrysler building. I can't get rid of the purplish tint of everything.

While it may be cool that you can use this as slide film, the results so far hasn't been impressive. OTOH, my one C41 processed Aerocolor shot looks great. It is a small sample for both.

Chrysler Bldg, WillTravel 4x5, SK Super Angulon 90mm f8, Reflx Lab Pro 100/Aerocolor 2460, cross processed in E6

This is my first attempt at cross processing Aerocolor in E6. Reflx Labs says it is doable so I tried it. Exposed at ISO 100, so normal. In fact I didn't take the pic to cross process it but figured I'd give it a try since I had the chems. This is a phone pic of the positive on my CSLite. No processing except to crop.

Two shots came out blank on 4x5

I'm still running through my head what could've gone wrong, especially since they were independent shots but in the same film holder. I had the camera in my hand on a photo walk this past weekend in Queens/Brooklyn, had the lens cap off for that reason I'm pretty sure. I've fired the shutter at all speeds to see it working and it does. I don't have any light leak that I can see now or in the past. I took them from the film holder into my Paterson tank and sealed it in the dark bag last night, and then developed them today. The temp of the chemicals was around 70, slightly higher than the normal 68 but well within range and slightly adjusted the time. The only thing I can think of is bad developer but it was DD-X that I made and used for a single shot a few weeks ago. I suppose that could be it. The only other thought I had was that I took the film from the wrong film holder. They came out black, as if exposed to light, not clear as unexposed.

I've been doing my own development, C41, E6 and B&W, for a couple of years now and never had a single problem.

I'll do a couple of test shots tomorrow and develop immediately with fresh mixed DD-X.

Any other ideas?
