Fat cells retain a biological ‘memory’ of obesity [1, 2, 3]. Even after substantial weight loss, fat tissue exhibits long-lasting cellular changes—modifications to DNA that control gene activity and because of this, previously obese cells remain functionally impaired so, they will store fat more rapidly, and directly contribute to accelerated weight regain.

By being obese it alters the fat cell so even when you lose weight and get to a healthy size, these cells retain chemical tags that dial up inflammatory pathways and dial down metabolism. [1, 2] Studies tracking gene expression (such as a landmark study published in Nature) found that fat cells and surrounding immune cells continue to behave abnormally for years after weight loss. [1, 2]

This cellular ‘memory’ causes fat tissue to function as if the body is still obese. If caloric intake increases, these cells attempt to return to their previous size at an accelerated rate. [1, 2, 3] Emerging research suggests that maintaining weight loss for an extended period—typically a year or more—allows fat tissue to regenerate healthy cells and gradually unlearn its obese genetic patterns. [1, 2] Understanding this "memory scar" is opening new doors for medical research. Scientists are now studying how to target these specific cellular memories to develop more sustainable weight-loss therapies. [1, 2, 3]

This just proves to me that the feeling you have like your fat is ‘hanging on for dear life’ and it is so resistant to weight loss probably has some merit. It just proves that the battle to maintain weight loss is a real fight with your fat cells. If you have to control protein and calories for multiple years after reaching goal to change these fat cells ‘memory’ will really require diet vigilance for several years and explains some of the statistics regarding regaining of significant weight being 30% or more.

Not the best news finding out the battle wages on for years but my experiences really support these findings.
