Volunteer opportunities for a day or two

Hello, I am in Geneva on a short term contract for a few weeks, and I was wondering if there are some good "day volunteering" type of things I can participate in over the weekends. In the US, I would think of like a soup kitchen or homeless shelter or even a community trash clean up or something. I don't know if this is a normal thing where you can just go for a day or a few hours to help out without any kind of a commitment.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Open to all causes. Would I need to arrange in advance or I can just show up?

Also, my French is not great (I can be polite) so I don't know if that limits me in any way.

Thank you for your suggestions!

And apologies in advance if there is a delay in response, getting ready for work this morning :)

Person on my 6 am flight checked a bag and didn’t show up to the plane.

Didn’t sleep well all week long, had 20 min of sleep last night.

Now we are delayed 45 minutes, a) originally to find the person, b) to unload their luggage.

Im very likely going to miss my connection and the lack of sleep is making me enraged.

WHY DO PEOPLE NOT BOARD THE FLIGHT. idiots.

Edit: we are now taxiing away, so no more updates. Yes, as I said before in the absence of injury, sickness, or death I am still infuriated and my flair is still accurate that I want a hotdog.

UPDATE: I did make the connection, although I was a crazy person running through schiphol airport. If you find a left AirPod, it’s mine. And say hello to my luggage which is still there. It will arrive to my hotel around 6 pm so hopefully I can find a hot dog in the mean time. Thanks for letting me vent my infuriations!

New Chitose Airport to Kutchan Station help

Can someone help me understand how to purchase a ticket for the trains for New Chitose Airport -> Otaru, and then Otaru -> Kutchan? I am on the JR East website and cannot see Kutchan as an arrival station, either by searching station or line.

I am traveling in early November (still before the ski season), would I need to buy a ticket in advance or should I just buy the ticket at the station? I know you can only buy tickets one month in advance online, but I am just looking now so I understand the system and don't get frazzled when I do need to buy it.

Also, I land at New Chitose Airport around 12 noon, and if the schedules remain the same, I am aiming to take the 13:50 train to Otaru, arriving at Kutchan around 16:50. The (almost) 2 hours should be ok for me to clear immigration, get my luggage and take the train?

Thank you very much for your help! I am really appreciate it.

how to handle aging parents

Hi guys, long time lurker. Taiwanese/Chinese American here, my parents are fully retired.

In the last 20 years, my dad has been fully retired (ahead of my mom), and he has basically just decided to live his best life through 20+ hours of YouTube watching a day. Sometimes he will participate in conversation with the rest of the family, most times, when least expected, he will burst and explode and ruin everyone's week. it's miserable. he's an absolute dick. he goes to my sister's place of work (in the medical field) just to yell at her because he made user errors with a new health thing his doctor forced him onto.

to say that my parents hate each other so much right now sounds excessive, but there is so much negative energy because of my dad, his explosiveness, and the fact that my mom is still clinging onto the retired life that she wanted him to have (be productive, help her out around the house) versus what she got (a lazy YouTube, now far right bum).

Question, and this is real - how do you guys deal with the WILDLY infuriating things that our aging parents are doing? We are trying to be supportive, but it's so difficult.

For example, me and my sister cannot make a suggestion that will make their lives easier (they don't listen to us, they'd rather hear it from a loud speaker in a wet market or have a friend tell them about it, than to listen to us).

I also think finances are going to be a nightmare in the future, because they refuse to do estate planning bc "they dont want anyone to know their true worth". I think wrestling control in the future once their faculties do truly become impaired is going to be a nightmare too.

I'm hoping someone with experience with generational trauma, geriatric psychiatry, etc, can give me some advice on what the PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE to support my parents are, because they resist everything my sister and I try to do. Is there some subtle hint way of suggesting things that my overthinking brain just bulldozes through?

thanks in advance for everyone's advice and support.

Good local places to eat nearby

Hello Taiwan subreddit. Longtime lurker. Going to Taiwan later in the year with my parents, who are originally from there but haven’t lived for decades.

Normally we stay in a specific part and always the same hotel and suddenly one of my parents found out about this place, and now that’s where we are staying.

Green World Hotel Grand Nanjing

104臺北市中山區力行里南京東路三段8號

https://maps.app.goo.gl/sqoWAf3Wh3wpA6T18?g\_st=ipc

It looks like a business hotel and my parents are fully retired so I don’t get it. But.

Can you all give me any recommendations of local spots to eat or cafes to hang out nearby? For example, I wanna have local breakfast at somewhere small and family run nearby.

Thanks !

Feeling lost, my IG algorithm knows

Hi everyone, not quite sure what sub to post this in and I settled very generally on spirituality.

I would say that I am spiritual, i know things about my past life. I also recognize that we are not our physical selves, and I try to live with that sense knowing that nothing in this life is permanent.

But also I have been lost for years. Every time I think I have a direction, the world beats me down and says that’s not the one for you, and I will show you loss and pain more than you thought you could handle. And guess what, you will survive.

Or, you think you need someone to help you survive? I’ll prove to you that no one will be there and you will still survive. This sounds outwardly negative but when I meditate, I’m told that these things happen because I can survive them.

Nowadays, I’ve been without work for a year. Everyone around me likes to assume it’s been a leisurely year. Lately my instagram has been feeding me so many things about manifestation, quantum leaping, secret codes, quantum hacks, secret frequencies etc etc. “if you see this video on a Thursday, send it to yourself to claim that whatever energy”

I feel like bc instagram is shoving it into my face that I’m just living in the wrong timeline or just that I’ve manifested negativity in my life, it’s causing me more discomfort and more pain bc the quantity of them is so overwhelming. I don’t know what to believe. I try not to take too much stock into what’s pushed to me on social media but on some days when I’m stuck in flight mode, all I do is scroll and all it does it tell me I just need to claim this energy.

It’s easy to think oh, I’ve experienced all this negativity bc I’m on the wrong timeline or whatever instagram is feeding me. But I also don’t believe that social media is a conduit to this new and positive timeline.

Just wanted to see if anyone else’s algorithm is pushing this to them, and what their genuine thoughts on these timeline leaps, manifestation, secret codes and everything.

Thank you to anyone taking this post seriously.

My sink plug is stuck

I normally pop it in and out but it is stuck in the “in” position. Do I need any tools to unstick this and what is the easiest way?

Replies may be delayed as this happened when I was one foot out the door, as expected.

But thank you in advance for your sinking expertise!

Just wanted to check if anyone had their vertuo machine start leaking out of the spout like this. It’s been a few days and I ran the descaling solution through it thinking that would help. Not really …

It doesn’t start dribbling out until the last 10-15 seconds of the brew, so at first you think it’s fixed but it’s definitely not.

Can I take it apart from somewhere to clean the spout? Is it a goner? Any advice or tips welcome … I have 150 more pods coming this week 😂

Hi everyone! My US passport is already the “extended” version, where the additional pages have been added in. I just realized I only have a few pages left and the current one does not expire for another three years.

For some reason I remember you can’t “extend the extension” so I can’t add more pages. Does anyone know that for sure? Or Should I apply for a second passport or request a new one?

Any googling has been overshadowed by today’s commemorative passport announcement so… Reddit it is.

Thank you all so much!
