Obrigado.

Violet light and involuntary hand/arm movements during meditation

Hi everyone! I’d like to ask for input from more experienced meditators. During some meditation sessions, I see a weak violet light with my eyes closed. At times, I also see a very light blue color.
I also experience involuntary movements in my hands and arms. Sometimes they are small spasms; other times the movements are vertical, horizontal, or circular. I remain fully conscious during the whole experience. I am aware of what is happening, and I don’t feel confused or disconnected. I’m not trying to force these experiences, and I don’t want to label them too quickly. I’ve seen similar things described as kriyas, energy release, nervous system discharge, tension release, or simply body adjustments during meditation. For those with more experience, does this sound like something common in meditation? How would you interpret or approach it? Thank you.

Studying English in London

I’m a 39-year-old Brazilian planning to study English in London for 3 months. Any practical recommendations for areas or English schools where I can practise English outside class, avoid staying mostly in a Portuguese/Spanish-speaking student bubble, and keep costs reasonably under control? I’ve checked the wiki, but I’d appreciate any first-hand advice. Thanks!

Brighton or Bournemouth for an adult English course?

Hi everyone, I’m a 39-year-old Brazilian planning to study English in England for 3 months. I’m choosing between Brighton and Bournemouth. My priorities are: friendly city, adult/mature environment, good homestay, reasonable cost, and access to London.
Both cities seem beautiful and friendly to me, so I may be overthinking this as an adult. I’d really appreciate a neutral and honest opinion — maybe these criteria don’t make much difference in practice. Which city would you recommend, and why? Thanks!

Brighton x English Learning

Hi everyone,

I may be spending around three months in Brighton doing an intensive English course. My main goal is to improve my listening, speaking, and confidence in real conversations.

I’m not looking only for tourist activities. I’d like to find practical ways to interact with local people and hear real English outside the classroom — for example, talks, walking groups, volunteering opportunities, local events, hobby classes, business or networking events, and pubs or cafés where people are friendly to newcomers.

I’m in my late 30s and work in project management and consulting, so I’d be especially interested in adult or professional environments, not only student nightlife.

Any recommendations would be very welcome. Thanks!

Is it worth studying English in Stockholm as a foreigner?

Hi everyone,
I’m a foreigner considering spending a few months in Stockholm to improve my English, mainly for work and professional conversations.
I know Sweden has a very high level of English, but I’m not sure if Stockholm is a good place to actually study English intensively, since Swedish is the local language.
Has anyone studied English at schools like Berlitz, Folkuniversitetet or PerfectEnglish in Stockholm?
Would it be useful for improving speaking, listening and confidence, or would it be better to study in an English-speaking country?
Thanks!

Best non-obvious cities in England to study English?

I’m a Brazilian professional planning to study intensive English in England for around 3 months. Besides London, Oxford, Cambridge and Brighton, which less obvious cities would you recommend for real immersion, good schools, adult environment and chances to practise with locals? Thanks.

If you had three months in Bournemouth and wanted to live like a local rather than a tourist, what would you do every week?

I’m in my late 30s and may spend around three months in Bournemouth to improve my English. I’m not looking for student nightlife or tourist activities. Where do adults in Bournemouth usually go to meet new people, join local communities, or have relaxed conversations with locals?

People over 40: what advice would you give to your 40-year-old self?

I’m approaching 40 and have been thinking a lot about what really matters in life: career, money, health, relationships, time, and purpose.

For those who are older or have gone through this stage already: if you could go back and give one piece of advice to your 40-year-old self, what would it be?

What mattered more than you expected? What mattered less?

Sabbatical

I’m close to 40 and have spent the last 15 years in the corporate world. My most recent role was as a director for two years at a major consulting firm.

I was recently laid off, and instead of rushing into the next role, I feel this may be the right moment to stop, reflect, reset, and possibly take a sabbatical.

For those who did something similar around this career stage: how did you use that time? What helped the most? What would you definitely do again and what would you avoid?
