I wanna feel some heat

Sick and tired of ordering “hot, spicy” for it to be as bland tasting as another Dwayne Johnson saves the day movie. I want to be stuck on the toilet, sweating like imma about to be denfenstrated. Where and what will take me to this abyss?

Oddbird in St. Catharines - One of the Best Meals I’ve Had in a While

I know this a bit outside GTA, but if you’re ever down in St. Catharines, definitely check out Oddbird.

Went here to celebrate my best friend’s birthday and honestly the whole meal was a 10/10. The restaurant itself had a really nice cozy vibe, and the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu.

We started with the oysters from New Brunswick during happy hour, so they were only $2 each. They were fresh, slightly sweet and salty, and really easy to eat.

The main event though was the 36 oz Côte de Boeuf, which my friend and I shared. It’s a bone-in AAA Alberta ribeye served with veal jus and fresh chimichurri, and this thing was incredible!!! The meat was ridiculously tender, had so much flavour, and the fresh chimichurri they make worked perfectly with it. I’m literally salivating again just writing about it. It was also a huge portion and definitely worth the price for the quality.

We also got the Nashville fried chicken sandwich as an appetizer. The chicken had a nice medium level of heat, so you definitely get some spice without it completely taking over. The mayo, pickles and shredded lettuce balanced everything out really well. Very solid fried chicken sandwich.

And then the salt and vinegar potato wedges… probably one of my favourite things we ordered. They were some of the most golden brown potato wedges I’ve seen, super crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked inside. The salt and vinegar flavour came through really well too. 10/10 wedges.

By the end we were absolutely stuffed and very satisfied. There honestly wasn’t anything I would’ve changed about the meal. The portions were great, the food was worth the price, and the service made the whole experience even better.

I’d definitely go out of my way to come back the next time I’m in St. Catharines.

Overall: 10/10

4 new coffee shops/roastery in Scarborough plaza

Cycling along the McNicol power line trail today, passed by this new strip mall so we took a look. We found 4 coffee shops (surprisingly not 4 bubble tea), didn't go in as it was too late for coffee. Anyone know about these?

I'll definitely check them out in the morning during the next bike ride!

Where can I find dairy free “milk” bubble tea?

Most milk tea has dairy/whey in the powder. There used to be a place in Parkdale where they used a powder that was naturally vegan, but I can’t seem to find anywhere else in the city.

If you know of any, pls help!

Looking for a Ice Cream/Frozen Treat/Dessert vendor

Hey all,

I run a brewery in the Stockyards and we're throwing a large outdoor Wrestling event with about 350-400 people expected at the end of September. I've had no trouble finding food trucks/vendors but I would love to have a dessert option for the guests as it's a lot of families that attend. I'm looking for something like a ice cream cart or one of these paleta carts you see at street fests. Something that doesn't take up a large footprint essentially. It's always a sold out event so business is good. We don't take a cut of profits but there is a small vendor fee of $50 to be fully transparent.

Would love to support a small business and make my guests happy for a win/win.

Feel free to email me at Sean@Rainhardbrewery.com

8 wild new CNE foods to try this year, from KD smoothies to pickle coffee

The CNE is back! Star food reporter Karon Liu tasted his way through the newest menu items to see which wild trends are worth trying.

From a Dirty Soda, Push Pop Dot Cake, a Carnival Cone of fried mac and cheese and a Pizza Pizza cheese slice covered in Flamin’ Hot Cheetoes — check out what he sampled at the CNE’s annual media preview day with this gift link. No paywall for this sub.

CNE food trends, plus some more overdue Star gift links

Hello r/FoodToronto! Karon Liu, food reporter with the Star checking in after a very busy week of doing CNE and BTS food-related assignments.

Yesterday was the media preview day of the CNE where the main event is to try all the new foods for this year. I know some outlets already posted a rundown of everything, but me being me and overanalyzing everything, every year I look at the CNE as a pulse-reader on what food trends that year are big enough to introduce to the masses (which runs with the intent of the CNE to showcase the latest technological marvels in one place). It's interesting to see what part of the zeitgeist makes it to the CNE food. Last year there was Labubu-themed fried cheese curds (what's more 2025 than that?), and as a sign that the Dubai chocolate trend was already on its way out, there was only one pistachio-chocolate treat. Not food related, but this year there was a lot of AI-generated signage...so I guess that's a sign of 2026 (sigh, you have the food right there! Just use a photo of that!).

This year pickle remains a staple carnival flavour in the form of cheesecakes, springrolls and pizzas, but one pickle-flavoured thing that did stand out was a pickle-flavoured ice coffee. I wrote earlier in the year that I noticed a lot of cafes in the city adding fruit juices like orange and lychee to their iced coffee drinks ahead of the summer, so I feel pickle juice is a CNE-fied continuation of that.

The viral Dot Cake from NYC back in the spring (basically a single-serving vanilla cake topped with rainbow nonpareil sprinkles) arrived in a push-pop cake form after I've seen a few Toronto bakeries come out with their own Dot Cakes (or in Machino's case, a dot doughnut back in June). Hallyu (the Korean culture wave that brought things like Kpop, Kdramas and Kbeauty to the world over the last three decades) continues to resonate in the form of Korean fried chicken served in a taco shell made from Buldak ramen (there was a Tiktok challenge earlier in the year of trying to eat the spiciest flavours). No explicit BTS-themed foods though, unlike in 2024 when the stall that did the Labubu curds did Taylor Swift curds for her Eras tour.

As for the KD Smoothie from Booster Juice, which seems to be the thing that's getting the most attention this year, KD has been doing a pretty interesting campaign this year and did collabs with San Remo (KD cheesecake) and Beavertails (KD-topped beaver tail) back in the spring. Booster Juice's product developer told me Kraft-Heinz was already helping them with some menu development so that led to them making the smoothie. Which by, the way, just tastes like a mango-pineapple yogurt smoothie with a very faint savoury cheese flavour at the end. It's not bad, they could have gone a lot cheesier. I actually finished my sample cup, but maybe because it was really hot yesterday and I missed breakfast.

Anyway, even you have zero interest in eating any of the foods, it is fun from a pop-culture analysis standpoint to take a look at what trends this year have trickled down to the CNE to be remixed and reintrepreted for the masses...like the Cerulean Sweater speech from the Devil Wears Prada, but deep-fried and covered in Flamin' Hot. I'm sure most of the people here who also keep track of emerging food trends from around the city and beyond will have fun looking at the CNE's food options as more of a scavenger hunt on what trends made it to the midway.

Double Baked Black Sesame Almond Croissant from Bake Code Croissanterie

I found this croissant to be overwhelmingly dry and hard. The outside layers were quite hard to chew, and the inside wasn’t very airy. The black sesame paste had a good amount of slight sweetness, but it also tasted dry. I’ve consistently had poor experiences buying pastries from bake code, and the quality of the desserts have gone downhill (used to be a massive fan of their vanilla Mille crepe cakes a few years ago). Cost was $5.90, wouldn’t say it’s worth the purchase when there’s probably better black sesame croissants in the city.

The photo doesn’t do the sandwich justice, but the Super Deluxe at Tata Hot Sauce is one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in Toronto

Looking for a grand Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurant in the GTA — hosting family, kids in tow

I have family visiting from out of town and I’d like to take them somewhere memorable. They spend a lot of time in Dubai and Turkey, so they’re used to that style of dining — big, beautiful rooms, generous mezze spreads, proper service. They’ve hosted us very well over the years and I’d like to return the favour.

Two things I’m hoping you can help me thread:

Budget isn’t the constraint. Happy to spend for the right place.
We’ll have four young kids with us, so a tasting-menu fine dining room is out. I need somewhere that can seat a big family at a large table and not blink when a five-year-old is a five-year-old.

Basically: the impressive, shiny, feast-on-the-table kind of restaurant rather than the hushed tweezers kind. Turkish, Lebanese, Persian, Syrian — all welcome. Anywhere in the GTA, happy to drive.

What are the places that actually deliver on the room and the food?

Food Review: Ramen Buta-Nibo

If you're looking for the most excessive, heart-stopping bowl of ramen in Toronto, Ramen Buta-Nibo might be the spot for you. They specialize in jiro-style ramen, which is known for its massive portions and ultra-rich broth.

Obviously, I wanted to try their specialty, so I went for the Spicy Ramen and also got Karaage on the side.

Is it located in Toronto? Yes.
Nearest Major Intersection. Danforth & Carlaw Ave.
Transit Accessibility? Good. A 5-minute walk from Pape station and reachable using bus route 72.
Halal? No.
Japanese-owned and run? Yes.
Service? Good.
Price (incl. tax + tip). $40.25

Spicy Ramen: Usually when I get ramen, I add extra Char Siu, but in this case they add so much meat that it may be unnecessary. Let me tell you, this bowl absolutely killed me. They add a pretty crazy amount of toppings and thick noodles to an already rich broth. The cabbage and bean sprouts add much-needed fibre to an otherwise very fatty meal. If you're not a fan of bean sprouts, this bowl may not be for you. The taste of the several kinds of pork was quite nice, and I enjoyed the crunch the vegetables added. I started getting the sweats at about the halfway point, and my heart was begging me to stop. While I do not regret coming here, it was definitely good; the excessiveness is not for me. I recommend trying this at least once. If I were thinking in terms of calorie/$ value, this may be up there for ramen spots. It's not as spicy as the photo implies.

Karaage: It was okay, reasonably priced compared to other ramen places. I think it was very lightly battered before frying.

In conclusion, not touching Raijin.

P.S. I include tax and, if any, tips in the price.

My experience with The Fancy Induced burger.

I worked at this place for a month or so. And they didn't even pay me a penny.

So, I'm gonna spill some secrets about this place.

I have no idea how did this place even managed to have a 4.7 rating because on reddit and reviews most people complain how terrible the food is.

While I worked there, everything over there was very old. The cheese, the sauces, the chicken and all. Probably the only thing that's fresh was the beef patties.

They would just order some stuff in bulk, open them up, put it in the fridge and never even have an expiry date written on them.

It was really disgusting to see a few things. I'm thankful that I'm not working there anymore. Because sometimes I genuinely wondered if the customers eating this were safe or not.

That's exactly why I'm leaving this post. I have no idea how many of you are gonna read this. Even if you do I don't know how many of you are gonna consider this.

But I would humbly request you guys to never ever go to this place and never let anyone you know go either.

I have tried leaving my experience working there as a review on google but for some reason it's not visible on other accounts.

Thanks a lot.

What's the best gluten-free cake you've tried in Toronto?

Looking for a 6-7 inch cake for a birthday. Would prefer non-vegan with dairy icing, but open to all suggestions.

When I searched on Google whisked came up but most options are over $100 which is a bit over my budget

Thanks
