Which classes can be double-counted at SEAS in case of a double-major?

Hi!

I have a quick question, and any help would be appreciated!

I know that it is very hard to double-major in SEAS since the number of required credits is high, and double-counting is very limited. But I am just evaluating my options, and double majoring in Applied Maths and CS is one of them. However, I have some questions about double-counting.

Can I double-count these classes?

  1. Intro to CS for Engineering and Applied Sciences

  2. Physics and Chem Core,

  3. Principles of Econ

  4. Calculus I-II

  5. Multivariable Calculus

  6. APPLIED MATH I: Linear Algebra

  7. Probability Theory

Which of these classes are available for double-counting? If they are, I think it is kinda manageable.

Columbia Freshman that thinks of transferring to MIT: is it POSSIBLE?

Hi!

I am an incoming freshman at Columbia University, and I plan to transfer to MIT for sophomore. What are the odds, like is it possible in reality?

I have heard that the elite colleges like MIT, Columbia and other Ivies usually accept transfer students from state universities, community colleges or other low-ranked colleges that don't offer much opportunities. Is this really true?

Thx in advance!

Can I minor in Economics in CC if I have met the Calc requirements?

Hi!

I would like to ask a quick question and any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know, there is a minor in Economics just in SEAS, but not in CC. And the reason of this is that the workload becomes huge for non-STEM majors in CC, considering the Calculus requirement. My question is that whether a student in CC majoring in Mathematics or CS can minor in Econ in SEAS? Are there anyone that did this?

Thanks in advance!

Does Honors Maths A meet Calc & Linear Algebra requirements for CS ( SEAS )?

Hi!

For context, I am an incoming freshman at CC who plans to transfer into SEAS. I have a quick question, and any help would be appreciated!

Does Honors Maths A meet Calc & Linear Algebra requirements for CS ( SEAS )?

THE BULLETIN: https://bulletin.columbia.edu/columbia-engineering/academic-departments-programs/computer-science/undergraduate-programs/computer-science-bs/

The course covers multivariable calculus and linear algebra from a rigorous perspective and fulfills other majors' calculus and linear algebra requirements. However, for CS, it isn't listed as an option (as in the link), which worried me a little bit.

Could you guys help me, especially if you took Honors Maths A/B?

CC → SEAS Internal Transfer: Financial Aid & John Jay Scholar Status?

Hi!

I'm an incoming freshman at CC that wants to transfer to SEAS. For context, I am currently a John Jay Scholar in CUSP and receive full financial aid.

I'm considering applying for an internal transfer from Columbia College to SEAS in the future for academic reasons, but I haven't been able to find clear information on how this affects scholarships and financial aid. The reason I wanna transfer is that my major at SEAS is covered more in depth than CC (Applied Maths & CS).

I was wondering if anyone here has gone through this process or knows the answers to these questions:

  • If I successfully transfer from CC to SEAS, will I continue receiving my full financial aid?
  • Will I remain part of the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP)?
  • Do I keep my John Jay Scholar designation, or does it change to Davis or Egleston after transferring?
  • If my scholar designation changes, am I still eligible for CUSP opportunities such as the Summer Enhancement Fellowship and other scholar benefits?
  • How does the CC to SEAS internal transfer process work in practice? When can you apply, and if accepted, when do you officially begin taking classes as a SEAS student?

Thanks in advance! Any help will be appreciated.

Do the cognate courses of the Mathematics major also count toward the Applied Math major?

Hi! I am an incoming freshman at CC who plans to major in Applied Math and CS.

For the Fall semester, I am looking for a class that satisfies the Science Core and can also count toward my major. That's why I've looked at cognate courses from the Physics Department, but I have seen that they are available to Math majors, and there was no information for Applied Math majors. Do they also count toward the Applied Math major?

Thanks in advance!

Physics MINOR and Ap physics scores

Hi! I am an incoming freshman at CC, and I am thinking of minoring in Physics. Any help would be appreciated!

On the Academic Bulletin, it says that

"The department grants 6 credits for a score of 4 or 5 on BOTH the AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 exams, but you are not entitled to any exemptions."

I meet these score criteria, but I didn't understand whether I can skip classes or not.

I didn't understand the point of getting the credit but not any exemptions. Can you guys help?

US Bank/Direct Deposit and Financial Aid

Hi! I am an incoming freshman at CC on full financial aid, and I have some quick questions about financial aid. Any help would be very appreciated!

  1. On the Countdown to Columbia portal, it says that we need to set up Direct Deposit on Vergil and enter the information for the bank account we want to use by August 1. However, I am an international student who doesn't have a U.S. Bank account yet. What should I do?

2)Will I be on a payment plan if I am on full financial aid?

3)Should I add an authorized payer? My parents won't be contributing to my education.

Thanks in advance!

For CS, What would you recommend?

Hi!

I am an incoming freshman at CC and would really appreciate it if you guys could share your thoughts.

Would you recommend?

Honors Maths A

Honors Maths B

or

Multiv. Calc for ENG&APP Sci

Honors Linear Algebra

and do recruiters (or grad school AOs) know Honors Maths A/B, its rigor, and which topics it includes or not?

If they don't know, and the transcript doesn't show them up, I do think that it's better to stick with 2ND option.

Doesn't Honors Mathematics A/B fulfill Calculus and LINEAR ALGEBRA requirements for the CS major?

Hi! I am an incoming student that wanna major in Applied Maths + CS, but confused a bit

For Calculus, the CC Bulletin says we need to take Calc III or Acc. Multivariable Calc or Multiv. Calculus for Engineering.

But they didn't list Honors Maths. Doesn't it fulfill this requirement?

For Linear Algebra, they require one of the following:

COMPUTATIONAL LINEAR ALGEBRA (recommended btw)

LINEAR ALGEBRA

Linear Algebra and Probability

Honors Linear Algebra

Intro to Applied Mathematics

Applied Math I: Linear Algebra

But again, there isn't Honors Maths A/B.

Can I take Honors Maths A/B for these two requirements? I used to know that it covers Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra, but it's a bit confusing that they didn't list it.

Is this schedule nice and manageable?

I am an incoming freshman at Columbia College. I envisioned myself taking these classes:

Fall 2026:

Honors Maths A

PROGRAMMING IN JAVA

........... (I have 4 credits left, what can I take here?)

Spring 2027:

Lit Hum 2

Frontiers of Science

Honors Math B

..........

.......... (I have 6 credits left, ı can take either 1 or 2 courses. What should I take?)

For context, I plan to double major in Applied Maths and CS. Thanks in advance!!

Would you recommend Maths-CS or Applied Maths & CS (double major)?

Is it really true that Maths-CS students don't dig into deep for both disciplines, but mostly study the relation of each other?

I heard that Applied Maths + CS double major is way more rigorous, and you have the option to take more advanced classes in both disciplines.

Thanks in advance!

About Re-Evaluation of Financial Aid

Hi!

I am an incoming freshman at Columbia College with financial aid, and ı have a quick question: It says in emails that the financial aid we received will be re-evaluated each year, but how do they re-evaluate it?

Do I need to get documents of my parents' income for this year, too, or do they just send a form without documentation?

Thanks in advance

Hi!

I am an incoming freshman here, and ı have a very quick question.

My immunization has been cleared TEMPORARILY since I did all my vaccines except MMR Dose 2 (it needs 28 days apart). However, the website says I need to upload my immunization forms no later than August 1.

Aren't these two contradict? Or is it okay to upload my MMR Dose 2 forms on August 10 ? (28 days apart from Dose 1)
