what’s stopping someone from just choosing the highest paying major in college?

i understand that some people are really interested or passionate about a certain thing or have always strongly wanted a specific career but that’s not most people so i’m wondering why more people don’t just choose the highest paying majors in college

i understand not everyone wants to risk another admissions process and way more money by going to grad school but for people straight out of high school going to college anyway what’s stopping them from just choosing the highest paying majors

i understand fit is something worth considering and not everyone can see themselves as certain stuff but i feel like if you told someone they’d be paid way more and have better job stability if they took a certain job even if they’re less interested in it or not something they can see themselves doing they’d probably take it

i also understand that people are scared of the difficulty but everything’s a learnable skill and it’s not like everyone that’s making a comfortable living is secretly way smarter than the average person

this is not me attacking anyone by any means i’m just genuinely curious

this is a general question but im also wondering why i as someone interested in statistics and considering majoring in it bc it seems like a good fit for me wouldn’t just try to do engineering

obv this question isn’t meant for people whose career isn’t related to going to college

and i know that obviously we can’t just have everyone do the same thing but im talking on an individual level

is it a bad idea to major in statistics if i have no intention of going to grad school?

i want to major in stats just bc i think it's cool and interesting but i don't want to major in something where everything related to it requires grad school or where im highly limited without it

part of why i want to major in stats is bc it seems like something that can be applied to a lot of other fields so im also wondering if thats true even with just a bachelors

also, would this be a better major compared to data analytics and economics? would those majors be more or less dependent upon grad school? i don't have any very specific career goals yet i just think statistics are cool

ik this’d probably fit better in the statistics subreddit but i keep tagging my post wrong no matter what i do so my post gets taken down

edit: should i worry about ai replacing my job? if not, how do i simply explain to my dad that?

how difficult is it making friends in college

i’m a high school senior going to a college with 30k undergraduate students and i’m slightly worried that i’ll struggle to find friends

throughout high school i’ve mainly had one friend who was my friend before high school and the only thing im kind of known for is being quiet

i’m not sure if i straight up regret not making more friends early on but i get jealous when people have known each other for a long time and are really close to each other and have lots of photos together and a history and i don’t want to waste this opportunity during college to make lots of friends

i don’t really have anything im that notably interested to the point i’ll join a club related to it for fun but if someone i liked was interested in something and really wanted me to be interested in it too ill probably become interested in it

im not against parties or drinking but i feel like id want to find friends before doing stuff like that bc thats just not really my scene and i just like doing stuff more with other people

ik its really corny and not important to add but i just like the idea of being part of a multiethnic friend group where everyone wears really cool clothes and everyone’s really cool and i become cooler and look cooler just by being around them all the time

ik this’d be more relevant in r/college but i got banned from there for some reason?

are humanities majors worth considering at all if you’re not passionate about the subject or interested in teaching?

like you think the subject is cool or decently interesting but it’s not something you’re deeply invested in or think about regularly outside of class and you don’t intend on going to grad school and don’t go to yale or wtv

in the book “The Price You Pay for College” i think i read somewhere that people are looking more and more at liberal arts majors? is that true or worth considering? did i misinterpret something? that wouldn’t be my reason to major in a humanity i just thought of it

should i consider studying political science?

ik this sounds really corny and dumb

i’ve always wanted to work for something greater than myself and not just do a job for the money but also dedicate myself to my career and i feel like political science kind of ties into that? idk

i also kind of want to work towards something involving a moral cause?

i also want to have a career that’s more involved than just analyzing stuff

im also somewhat interested in becoming a lawyer in the future bc i think its kind of cool to look into a lot of different people’s situations and be able to defend them but if i end up majoring in polisci that wouldn’t be the reason why

it’s weird bc im not that curious of a person or interested in politics or in the model un club i was in at my school but i keep thinking about majoring in political science for some reason and its a lot easier for me to be interested in history and government in class then any other subject

idk if its worth mentioning or even related but i also really like the idea of research

ik it doesn’t give the most direct career path but it can’t be that bad of a decision financially if it pays more compared to most bachelor’s degrees but that might be bc a large proportion of polisci majors try to go to law school

there’s probably a better way to put all this and this is something i’ve just been vaguely thinking about

are niche college majors a bad idea

i was scrolling through all the majors that my college offers and i was wondering how bad of an idea would it be to major in something that no one’s heard of and is specific to that college and also doesn’t sound related to a more popular major

i’m not considering any of them im just curious

how useful is a statistics degree without grad school?

i want to become a therapist but i want to double major psychology with something more practical that i can use without going to grad school but would still be useful if i do go to grad school

i do have an interest in studying statistics in general so its not like im forcing myself to study it just to double major with psych

if i have no intention of getting a graduate degree in stats, would it still be fine to major in it?

is statistics a good double major with psychology?

i’m considering majoring in psychology so i can go to grad school to become a therapist but i want to major in something alongside psychology that i could use to help me find a job without going to grad school if for whatever reason i don’t want to go to grad school but also something that wont be useless if i end up becoming a therapist

i am interested in studying statistics in general so it’s not like i’m forcing myself to study it just in case i don’t go to grad school

i’m not set on statistics specifically though so i’ll listen to any double major recommendations

does a degree in ppe offer similar opportunities to a degree in econ?

i’m a high school senior in the united states who’s interested in studying economics but i saw the college i’m going to has a degree in politics, philosophy, and economics and i’d like to know if a degree in that would offer similar opportunities to a degree in economics and if applying with a ppe degree instead of an econ degree would be looked down upon

i’m considering ppe over normal economics since it’s in the college of liberal arts at my university instead of the college of science and there are additional fees you need to pay each year if you attend the college of science

not that related but is it important what laptop you get for econ? i have an ipad pro 2020 and am considering just getting a keyboard and using it instead of a laptop
