How did I do?

Finally cycled tank after 6 weeks. I decided I couldn’t stand how it looked. So I changed out the dragon rock and put in slate instead. Plants are still babies. Can’t wait to see how it grows in!

Apart from the still floating driftwood, what do you think?! I have a tiger lily lotus bulb in there which will give some height too.

I also decided I am done with hornwort. I can’t stand that stuff.

Swipe for the during (wood not floating, but root tabs stirred up) and the before.

Show me your standard 20 gallon tanks

I do not have my fish yet. I am already tired of how my tank looks. So I am planning on swapping out my dragon rock for more driftwood and smooth river rocks. I have black sand substrate, lots of green plants and some reds.

Can you show me your standard 20gallon scapes for inspiration? You guys are all so talented and creative!

[FS/FT]- Brandon, VT - $15 - 3 containers of Goldfish Food

We had a goldfish and he died unfortunately. I have food available. Two are opened but mostly full. And one unopened bag of Hikari Lionhead food.

Would trade tropical fish food, betta food, or bottom feeders food.
$15 for all containers.

Local pickup only.

What would you change?

I don’t love how the rock and driftwood are arranged in my 20g. No fish yet. What would you do instead?? Is there a way to make the driftwood look more like a tree? Rearrange the rocks?

To keep? Or not to keep? Snail eggs

I purchased hornwort and a few other plants from a local person yesterday. They said they did an alum dip and picked what they could off of the plants. I rinsed them before putting in my tank but this morning - in the light of day- have noticed snail eggs and detritus worms on them. Should I let them be or remove?

Cycling fish tank - need design ideas!

20g tall tank currently cycling. This morning had a decrease in ammonia, decrease in nitrite and spike in nitrate! Yay!

Anyways- I have a few things on order for the tank including real plants and drift wood. I had help to create a mock up of a tank without fish the plants I have ordered. (See 2nd photo).

I plan on getting a dwarf gourami, Pygmy corys and celestial pearl danios.

Anything else you would add while still allowing for enough swimming area for the fishies? And any other suggestions welcome as well.

* the hanging filter to the left is just from an old small tank and will be moved once tank is established. It’s not connected to a pump. Just chilling there.

Fish species ideas

I have this 20 gallon tank that is currently cycling. I was going to get a fantail or two- but since doing lots of research and reading, I have decided to do the humane thing and get fish that can live happily long term in a 20g. I will be adding live plants and drift wood and a hiding cave. I hadn’t gotten those things yet since I was planning on goldfish first. So this tank is definitely not “decorated” as it will be once I am ready for fish (which is still weeks to months away).

I need some advice on what fish to get instead of goldies. I like the personality of fancy goldfish so I’m looking for similar “puppy dog” type fish for the centerpieces.
Also- what plants work best? I only have sand substrate.

I have a smaller tank that I will be getting a Betta for.

Also happy to get schooling fish in addition to a couple of centerpiece fish.

Thanks!!

Heartbroken to think of them in their little cups

Does anyone else think about Bettas at the pet shop in their tiny cups and get very emotional about it?
I have a small tank I am getting set up for a betta but I just wish they could coexist and I could take more home.
No? Just me?

Ranchu goldfish - and I fear we are doing it all wrong 😟🫣 please be nice.

Edit: I’ve ordered a 30 gallon tank to be delivered to my house tomorrow. Along with better filter and a heater- I will be watching YouTube videos all night learning how to cycle and will do it correctly. Hoping Johnny will be okay thru the night. I did change his water and conditioned it this evening.

My daughter wanted a fish- so we went to petco and she fell in love with this cute little orange ranchu cuz he was wiggling his bum 🥰. So we got what we thought we would need - we had no cell service in the building and no sales people were very helpful.

We have had him (Johnny) home since yesterday around 5 pm. We got a 6 gallon tank. Which I know now is too small.

We have a lame set up. A tiny filter. Glass rocks at the bottom and some fake plants. I’m waiting for the water test kit to arrive from Amazon. (Didn’t know I needed one till we got home).

His tank was nice and clear and he was swimming well and actively all night and most of today. Recently, his tank has gotten cloudy and I don’t want to stress him out right now by cleaning it and changing the water again. (I will tomorrow if that is a suggestion). You can see the difference in the photos. Also the lighting is different so that is a factor. But still.

Please tell me all the things I need to know to make sure Johnny has a happy fishy life.
