Obrigada!

Well-written, engrossing family dramas?

I’m in the mood for a long, immersive family saga. Preferably one with plenty of messy relationships and generational drama. My own family is going through it at the moment, so naturally I’d like to escape into someone else’s problems lol

Any recommendations?

Defending soon - any tips?

I'm defending in 6 weeks. I'm meeting with my supervisor a few times to practice regarding some questions they think may come up. My supervisor has reassured me that everything will go well, that my thesis is great, and having that time with them to practice is also very helpful. But I feel incredibly anxious nonetheless. Any tips? How was your defense? If you had to write a presentation (as I do), what was your approach?

Project proposal in 1k words

Hello!

I'm in the humanities and applying for two postdoctoral fellowships that require a short research proposal of around 1k words. I'm finding it surprisingly difficult because every proposal I've written before has been between 4 and 7 pages long.

Does anyone have any tips on how to condense a project into 1k words without making it feel superficial? Are there good templates for this?

How long should a sample book chapter be?

Preparing a chapter based on my PhD thesis to submit with a book proposal (namely to Edinburgh University Press). However, I can't find any information about the word limit. Does anyone know? Is there a sort of universal rule?

Is Austen not for me?

I've tried reading and gave up on Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Is Austen definitely not for me, or are there other novels - better suited for beginners - that I should try?

Best Dickens to start with?

I've never read Dickens. From the synopsis, I'm most interested in The Old Curiosity Shop, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations. Which one should I pick up first?

Edit: Thanks! You all convinced me to start with Great Expectations! :)

Podcast where people share what they're reading?

I follow a decent amount of bookish podcasts that range from deep discussions around a certain book to general discussions about various books. But I'm wondering if there's one where someone or multiple people just share, in each episode, what they're currently reading. Like you would do with a friend. No deep analysis, nothing fancy. Just some banter about what they're reading, their enjoyment, stuff like that.

Is there a podcast like that out there?

Defending soon. Should I email before sending my book proposal?

I've submitted my thesis and the viva is scheduled for early September. I've been thinking about the edits I need to do to turn my thesis into a book. Should I email an acquisitions editor soon to ask if they're interested in receiving my proposal after the viva? Or should I just wait until I defend and email the proposal?

Also, should I only email one publisher or multiple that are a good fit?

I've looked at the proposal forms and it seems like a risk to spend time filling them before knowing if they're even interested in the topic of my book.

My Google site has stopped appearing on Google searches

A few days ago I made this (https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/s/6ftsPBgJIX) post asking how to make my new Google site appear when people Google my name. After a day, the site was coming up as the 4th search result for my name which I was very pleased with. Now, it's not. It doesn't come up at all although it's still online (I can access it through the link).

Any idea why? Any help? Thanks!

Getting my google site to appear when people search my name - help

I've created a professional Google site for myself. The URL is my name, I have a domain, and the site is indexed. How do I get the site to appear within the first Google search results when someone googles my name?

Apologies if this is a stupid question. All of this is unfamiliar to me. I'm trying to work with it to the best of my abilities.

Proposing an edited book - help

I'd love to get some help understanding the process of proposing an edited volume (in the humanities). I've contributed to one before, but I've never been "on the other side" of things. For context, I'm an early career academic (will be defending my thesis in a few weeks), with 5 peer-reviewed publications (4 articles and 1 book chapter). I also know some people think editing a book is not worth it - and would love to get some perspectives on that as well - but I'm very passionate about this, so I'm inclined to do it.

I have an idea for an edited book to celebrate the anniversary of a famous work in my field. It would be composed of essays thinking about the contribution of the work, how it has impacted the field, how it can still open lines of questioning etc. I know a few well-known academics from whom I'd love to get a contribution. I also think the volume would benefit from a CFP to get contributions from early career academics who are not well established.

How should I go about it? If I begin by asking the academics I'd like to invite to contribute, I'll be inviting them to contribute to a non-existent project. If I begin by proposing the collection to a publisher by mentioning the invited academics, I'll be assuming the academics will accept the invitation. Neither option sounds correct.

Any help about this would be great!

Best nonfiction books published in the 21st century?

Inspired by a recent post about why we read nonfiction, I thought I'd ask: what are some nonfiction books published this century that you've really enjoyed?

What's your job?

I'm very curious to know what people on this sub do for a living.

As for myself, I'm a full-time philosophy PhD student, finishing my degree and hoping to get an academic job in the near-ish future (though I’ll most likely be teaching secondary school in the meantime).

Garnier Salicylic Liquid Care suitable for daily use?

Just got this and used it two nights in a row. I was thinking of continuing using it every night, but am unsure if it's suitable for that? It is, according to instructions, but I'd like to know what are other people's experience with this! For context, I have oily skin and some cystic pimples on my chin. And at night all I do is wash my face with the Bioderma Sebium Foaming gel and apply Svr Sebiaclear Repairing hydrating care. On active spots I then put Avene Cleanance Comedomed Peeling.

Temptation by János Székely

I bought this book second-hand purely because it was an NYRB Classic. Before reading it, all I knew was that it was a coming-of-age story set in Budapest between the wars. I just finished it, and I’m floored. It’s a mix of social realism, coming-of-age fiction, and working-class literature with impeccable writing and great pacing. It’s gut-wrenching and enraging while still remaining hopeful.

I couldn’t find much about the author’s life. After moving to the US, he wrote screenplays in Hollywood under pseudonyms, and he eventually left the country after being persecuted during the McCarthy era.

It seems like this was his only novel. And what a banger!

Redacting my self-citation for anonymous peer-review

I'm writing a paper, and at a certain point I think it would be useful to cite my forthcoming paper. Since this is my first time doing this, I should redact it for anonymous peer review, right?

I favourited an item and then quickly unfavourited it when I realised I wasn’t interested. I also have turned off the option that lets sellers know when I favourite their items, since I first created my account. So I’m confused about why they contacted me with an offer.

If this is a bug (Vinted notifying people that I’ve favourited items when I don’t want it to) that’s really annoying. Has this happened to anyone else?

Do you think they're worth it?

I have a Google scholar page and an academia.edu account (solely to host my CV). But, seeing other people's websites, I find that it seems like a nice place to gather all my information (affiliations, prizes, publications, presentations...). I'm about to finish my PhD, so if I were to make one, it seems like a good time to do it.

I'm keen to know about people in the humanities who have one: do you think it's beneficial?

Just casually scrolling on my Facebook feed. See a post by an academic journal's page and click to see the comments. See the profile of a well known academic - who I've never interacted with online or in real life - who has commented and click on it. I'm blocked.

I'm so confused!? Why? How? When?

And I'm currently writing a paper to submit to the journal where they're an editor! Now I'm thinking I shouldn't submit at all?
