We really need to have a conversation about affordability at the Fair.

I went to the fair with my son last night. Between the $16 ticket to get in, $9 pork chop on a stick, $8 corn dog, and the “credits“ for the rides, it was pretty pricey for someone with a little bit of disposable income, let alone families that are struggling.

I understand that everything is expensive now, and that people should make money on products and services provided. But what used to be a universal experience I fear is now more and more akin to an NFL game where it’s just become the norm that everything’s going to cost so much that fewer people will be going.

Your dog needs to be on a leash. Period.

I have now had two instances in two days in two different parts of the city where dog owners didn’t think they needed to have their dogs on a leash. The one today was the most egregious.

We went for coffee at Frederich’s on 42nd and a lady with her giant Newfoundland entered without a leash. She lets her dog roam the room and basically insists on everyone pet her dog.

Then she tells my wife ”how do I tell my dog that we can’t go to Bone A Petreat because I’m boycotting them?” I don’t know lady, if you had a leash you could just pull him away.

I try really hard not to be “that person” and let people live their lives, but I’m pretty disappointed that the baristas just let it happen. I don’t care how much of a good boy your doggo is, every dog is way too unpredictable to let them roam IN A RESTAURANT without a leash.

Does ARL accept used pet supplies?

Our dog crossed the rainbow bridge today. We have a kennel, a dog bed, half a Costco bag of dog food, and a bunch of dog toys that are no longer needed in our household.

If they don’t, does anyone know of a place that will accept them?

Seeing Sam and Amy visit my neck of the woods made my heart smile.

I live in Des Moines and my family is from Siouxland- NW Iowa, SE South Dakota, and SW Minnesota.

It was so fun to see a place that I’m ingratiated with being featured when normally we are literally “flyover” country. Some things of note:

Their only footage of Des Moines makes it look like the city is just a cornfield. They began the next day at a spot right on the outskirts of town, which was actually less than a mile from our Zoo (yes, Des Moines has a zoo and it’s pretty awesome!). Fun fact: the Des Moines metro has about 750,000 people. It’s not New York, but it’s not the sticks. They go into detail in the podcast about their stay in Des Moines (and Amy went to ‘A Dong’ for Vietnamese food, which yes is a hilarious name but is also some of the best food in the city).

LeMars, which is where Amy asks Sam to get tattoos, is the HQ of Wells Blue Bunny ice cream and there’s a massive museum and ice cream shop there.

Right before the big “Minnesota Welcomes You” sign they make a big deal about, they’re only a few miles from Hawkeye Point, which is the highest point in Iowa. What is hilarious is that it’s not a hill or even a slight bump in the landscape— it’s literally some dudes hog lot. Northwest Iowa is hilariously flat, the type of flat that you can see the next town over that might be 5-10 miles away and not be on any hill whatsoever. Western Iowa has the Loess Hills which are really nice and NE Iowa has the Driftless Area which is downright gorgeous. But nope, the highest point is a flat farm.

Okabena Lake is located in Worthington, MN and my grandma lives about four blocks from the lake. In fact there’s one shot where if the camera was panned a little to the right you could see her old house.

Anyway, it was super cool to see my old stomping grounds in Jet Lag.

Satan worshippers: what time are we arriving Friday?

I’m heading to MSP tomorrow for the meetup. I know it starts at 4 but I’m curious what time people are showing up.

I was always so skeptical of people saying that Des Moines has the worst drivers.

Then I went to the Walmart on SE 14th.

Lady straight up going up the row to the fire lane like she was still on the street, had I not seen her coming she absolutely would have T Boned me.

On a related note, anyone know where I can get Martins Potato Rolls anywhere else? Their website says this is the only place but Id really rather not come back if I don’t have to.

What Antenna are y’all using?

Before you say it— yes, I know how they work.

What indoor antenna is everyone using to get normal broadcasts in town? Last night I had to do a big ol song and dance just to get the Knicks game on ABC, and tonight for the Fever game I had to adjust more than usual for CBS when that’s normally the most solid. I really don’t want to spend 300 on an outdoor antenna if I don’t have to.

(Some) private school salaries are a joke.

I recently saw a post in the Elementary Music Teachers Facebook page for a job at a private religious school, I believe it was California but I could be mistaken (it was taken down).

The school wanted candidates to be trained in Orff Schuelwerk, which is a specific methodology and the certification can cost hundreds of dollars, up to a thousand dollars in some instances.

The salary? 35,000. Not starting— it was the top salary. They even mentioned in the post that because they were a private school that they don’t follow the state’s salary schedule.

I started out with that 12 years ago and barely scraped by in a LCOL area.

I understand this isn’t everywhere, but Good Lord how do you even get anyone to take that kind of money? Even with the worlds best behaved kids, that’s a slap in the face.
