Picked up some culled 2x6 8’ redwood for a few bucks, too soft to use in a workbench?

Randomly bought three 2x6 8’ redwood board at a lumber yard for a couple bucks each. They were being culled and let me have them cheap. Not all 8’ of each board is usable, but they’re mostly fine.

I was there to check out wood to build a small workbench. Is redwood too soft to use for say the legs of a workbench to say aprons? They already have some dents and dings so they do seem softer than the fir boards I was looking at.

Modifying Steve Ramsey BMW plans for vise and MDF vs plywood

I’m looking to build a small bench like Steve Ramsey’s BMW. One thing I want to add is a face vise. What modifications to his plans could I do to make adding a vise easier. https://theweekendwoodworker.com/wp-content/uploads/Basic-Mobile-Workbench.pdf

My other question is if I replace the plywood with MDF similar to Rob Cosman’s basic bench design would it perform any different than plywood in terms of clamping or dogholes? I find the MDF I can get locally to feel smoother, but also adds extra weight to the bench vs plywood.

Top side of prints often have messy areas like this. Flashforge 5M Pro (PLA and PETG)

Flashforge 5M Pro, PLA or PETG I often get this issue on flat top surfaces. I also used a filament dryer, but the filament has been on the printer for about a week now.

This doesn’t occur every single print, but on objects that have flat top surfaces I often get this type of defect. I only use the default settings in FlashPrint and only change the material type and maybe infill %, but I’ve noticed this with various infill amounts.

Have a 5.00 Digital new in box. What’s the best firmware to stay on?

I recently bought an older digital PS5 for really cheap knowing it would be a fairly low firmware. Turns out it was 5.00. I’m referencing this post and from what I can read here it’s above 4.51 so some of the better exploits won’t work. It also can’t to Linux.

So since I’m above 4.51 what firmware should I stay on? 5.00 or is there a better option that gives better comparability? That thread mentions 10.00 as the sweet spot firmware, but could more exploits come to lower firmwares like 5.0 I’d then miss out on?

What’s cheap and can be used as sort of a shim to slightly raise something? Roughly 1’x2’

I need to raise something by about 1/8” to 3/16”. I initially just used a piece of cardboard, but it compressed so it’s not level anymore. I know you can get thin wood sheets, but they were expensive when I went to Home Depot, more than large plywood in some cases. The item is a bit over 1’x2’. Any material is fine with me as long as it’s rigid and won’t compress. I just couldn’t find anything cheap last time I was at the store.

I’m building a net and hitting mat in my garage, but one thing I didn’t consider is how loud a driver can be. I’m in an end unit with one shared wall which is another garage, but how loud would a driver be for the adjacent neighbor and possible others. For instance we have an alley overhead another garage across from us. Will I need to do some sound proofing or with the garage door closed will it be minimal and not cause complaints?

The bottom is made of two 3/8" OSB boards. I can't use one single board since they only come 4'x8' and I need slightly wider than 4'. The inner dimensions of the frame are 4'x5'. The walls are 2x3s, I haven't decided on the wood yet, but will probably just get the cheapest available.

This will be on the ground, OSB side down, and a golf mat will be placed inside. So it will be stood on. I also plan to add some handles to one of the longer side walls and come small caster wheels the opposite side.

Since the OSB will be touching my garage floor if I use screws to secure the 2x3s from the bottom will they be inset enough into the OSB to not scratch up my garage flooring? My other concern is do I need to secure the two OSB boards together where they meet or will adding screws from the bottom of the OSB up into the 2x3s on 3 edges be secure enough.

I’m trying to find the right mat to use for my DIY sigpro softy insert. Im planning on OSB base, then 1 to 1.5” of gym tiles, then the mat.

My issue is reading reviews and posts about different mats many have durability issues in the standing area, mainly compression making the standing surface uneven over time. Can anyone comment on their mats and how the standing area has held up over time? Since I won’t be hitting off it I’d rather get something durable that won’t compress vs something “realistic” feeling. The softy insert will be for that.

I am planning on building a DIY hitting mat with insert cutout, likely will go with the sigpro softy as posts seem to indicate it is the best option for avoiding injury.

The mat that seems most popular is the gosports elite that seems to be roughly 1" in total thickness so that you can add 1.5" worth of gym flooring to create the correct height for the softy insert. But this mat will go directly on garage concrete and need to be tipped on its side and placed against the wall to store as I park two cars in the garage.

The sigpro softy insert seems to be 2.5" so a popular setup seems to be:

  • 1" foam flooring + 0.5" foam flooring + 1" GoSports Elite 4x5 + Sigpro softy (~$400+tax)

Another option might be:

  • 0.5" foam flooring + 1" foam insulation + 1" GoSports Elite 4x5

My concern is with the bottom foam flooring being direct on the concrete and over time getting sanded down and the whole thing potentially not being stable enough when hitting on. At ranges when using the thick mats they have, probably 1.5" it will slide forward a tiny bit every swing. I plan to get a Square HE that will be separate from the mat the alignment might get screwed up.

Any suggestions on a more rigid and stable setup or is the 1.5" of foam flooring enough to make a 4x5 size mat stationary on concrete?
