Can antihistamines really help with PMDD and menopausal symptoms?

‘But in its May 2026 position statement, IAPMD noted that “there is insufficient evidence to conclude that histamine tolerance, mast cell activation, or related immune mechanisms are a primary cause of [pre-menstrual disorders]”.
That said, Gordon “wouldn’t be surprised” if histamine and immune system processes potentially play a role in PMDD symptoms for some individuals. Still, there’s a need for much more research on the topic, as well as on PMDD and hormone sensitivity more broadly.’

Is anyone else as triggered as me about online reactions to the Lindsay Clancy case considering we are all high risk for post natal depression and psychosis? 😭

Do you have a normal life?

Having had this diagnosis a year ago but also reflecting on how it affected me when undiagnosed and now how hard I work to stay as well as possible, but I’m not sure if I will ever be able to have a normal life with flare ups?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Should I lower my expectations?

I feel like many people are unaware of how nutrition plays a vital role in how well Levothyroxine works.

Many thyroid specialists recommend a balanced diet, but many hashimotos patients have food allergies, sensitivities, poor gut health and absorption issues so we are often not getting a balanced diet and must supplement if so. So we spend years feeling like crap wondering why Levo isn’t solving that and our labs look normal but not ideal. And it takes us so long to learn all this when doctors should be giving us this info or sign posting at least!

Have you had your blood 🩸 checked ✅ thyroid, d, folate, ferritin, and b12? To rule out these issues, to know if they could be making things worse?

The most common exclusionary tests include:
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and T4: To check for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, which can cause severe mood changes and irregular periods.

Full blood count (FBC): To check for anaemia or iron deficiency, which frequently present as extreme fatigue and weakness.
Vitamin D, B12, and Folate: Deficiencies in these key nutrients can mimic the low energy and mood disruptions of PMDD.
Prolactin level: To rule out hyperprolactinemia.
HbA1c or Fasting Glucose: If metabolic issues or diabetes are suspected.

Here in the uk 🇬🇧 many don’t get tested mainly because doctors don’t encourage this, you have to know to ask, and people end up suffering far too long, with exacerbated PMDD and or PME.

Illness narratives are broken – and they’re failing women like me | Emma Hardy

‘Many of our stories about illness follow a similar narrative arc. There is an inciting incident: someone gets sick. The person does not want to be sick. The illness is eventually accepted, bravely fought, and our hero either gets better, or they don’t, and they die. This is a narrative structure that relies on closure. It values transformation over endurance. But it has nothing in common with how chronic illness actually plays out.’

If antihistamines help you with pmdd symptoms do you feel you have MCAS?

There is a theory on Reddit in pmdd communities that if antihistamines work for pmdd like symptoms, people have MCAS.

‘Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a chronic immune system condition where mast cells—cells that help fight infection—overreact, releasing too many chemicals (such as histamine) too easily. This leads to repeated, severe, multi-system allergic reactions, including skin, gut, and heart symptoms, sometimes leading to anaphylaxis.’
