One movie with legendary star actors overshadowing her vs a prime role in a beloved xmen franchise (a team that’s going to be there for at least the next decade of the MCU). I’d make that choice too
doom, it is done bro.
Reignited more hype for the movie even before it started shooting. This combined with how they shot the whole chase sequence in public genuinely made people excited as to the direction they're taking for this version of the character both in terms of the aesthetics and the feeling.
Sucks as to how long we're gonna have to wait again for another movie.
The inky blacks. The contrast. It was shot by Russel Carpenter (Titanic, JOBS, True Lies) and gaffed by Erik Messerschmidt (Fincher’s recent go-to DP)…
This is a really well-photographed film with warm/cozy production design, a nice mix of hard lighting with soft keys, and tons of practicals. Killer color grade too.
It was also shot digitally on the old ARRI Alexa M - the camera James Cameron helped develop with ARRI for 3D rigging. The skin tones are insanely rich.
I share this only as a reminder that even the stuff we dismiss as ‘content’ these days can still look great.
The truth is he looks much better than in the first glimpse we had of the series; those changes to the beard improved his appearance quite a bit. The first look did a horrible job at portraying both the characters. Especially the eyes. Kratos’s eyes should be more light colored.
The only con is that he's 31 which is like 9 years older than the guy who got the role.
Trying to push for unnecessary race bends for Cyclops when Storm is right there as another xmen leader. And there’s nothing wrong with making some characters black. It worked for Nick Fury and others.
But pushing for race bends for no reason is what leaves a bad taste in a lot of audience’s mouths with the subject matter of diversity in these movies.
And it’s annoying because a lot of these people primarily say “this couldve been a black person” without even giving as to WHICH black actor. If I have a feeling a black actor would play a particular character better I would also have the actor selected, not just going by saying cast some black actor here. And above all, they just make it about race for no reason when a casting is announced.
