“Seafood” ideas

Hi, my husband is allergic to all seafood so I would like to try some vegetarian options and subs. I’ve been to restaurants where they’ve used hearts of palm I think for “crab” but the restaurants were always super fancy and I haven’t had great luck with finding reputable recipes online.

Anything you make that scratches the seafood itch?

Recommendations for good outdoor toys for onlies?

Hi, looking for advice. I have one 3yo girl.

I live in a neighborhood where kids play outside their house a lot and I feel like we are the house with the worst toys and games. I want to have fun stuff to entertain her friends, or herself when she’s playing alone.

I know you don’t need toys/consumerism/etc… but I keep buying toys I think will be fun but they end up being crappy.

Before I drop more money/spend time picking up stuff that stinks, any advice?

We do have a lot of chalk, a trike she doesn’t like to ride, a small water table that’s kind of meh, some balls/t ball but doesn’t really get the kids going. We also got a baby pool that we’re going to inflate for the 4th of July block party.

What does your kid love to play with? Good recs on a bubble machine you actually like?

Using Garmin watch for CO?

Hi, I’ve been trying to get going with CICO and stay disciplined, been on and off. Getting back on it.

I got a Garmin watch. I know you need to give it a week to calibrate. Has anyone here used it successfully to track calories out? Do you find it reliable? Bouncing between this and online TDEE calcs to figure it all out.

Any other advice or recommendations for Garmin are appreciated. I mostly got it to count my steps since I want to try to make that more of a goal for my general health and wellness.

ISO help confirming daily calorie target

34f, currently ~145lb, 5’4”, goal: 135 lb

Workout about 4-5x a week, trying to get more steps in just walking around my neighborhood. Work a desk job. When I workout I do Peloton strength or tread workouts (weights about 3-4x a week, cardio about 2-3x)

I’ve done every diet under the sun, including calorie deficit but I never stuck with it long enough to see results and I can be easily discouraged. I know water weight is a thing and the scale fluctuates… working on unlearning thought patterns and behaviors that aren’t serving me.

Anyway, I’ve done the various online TDEE calculators but I’m not sure if the daily calorie goal I’ve been using is the right one. I’ve been trying for 1300 calories a day.

Been consistently tracking for about 2 weeks, weight has maybe dropped but I may have been shedding water weight only? Seems kind of hovering at the same number. Wondering when others started seeing results? I try to get 100-120g of protein though does it need to be more and/or consistent to see results?

Why do my smoothies taste so bad?

I make the worst smoothies ever. I’ve followed recipes, I’ve winged it, I’ve done everything, I’ve done nothing.

Adding a handful of spinach? Tastes like ass. frozen blueberries? Pee. Frozen bananas and fresh blueberries? Poop from a butt. Alternative milks, dairy milks, protein powder, no protein powder. Honey, maple syrup, yogurt no yogurt. Every permutation.

Everything is bad. This must be a user error (me).

What are your smoothie tips? Why are mine terrible??

We’re both only children with an only child, OAD?

My parents were OAD by choice, his not so much. We both had fulfilling childhoods. As an adult I am sometimes jealous of my friends who are very close with their siblings, but other people I know aren’t super close with their sibs?

We have a 3yo daughter who is the coolest funniest kid in the entire world and we are very fulfilled. If one of us had a sibling who lived close by and they had kids i think we would feel very confident with OAD. We both are strongly leaning that way, but neither of us know what it’s like to have siblings and we worry that our daughter won’t really have the cousin experience that we did. Most of our friends with kids have multiple so it’s not like they are looking for solidarity with OAD. When I was growing up my best friend was an only child and that helped me a lot.

We live in a suburban apple pie neighborhood with tons of kids and young families so she can socialize there in addition to school and her dance class. I grew up in a remote area so that also made me more isolated.

My partner and I both work full time and I am also in school. I do not want to let that factor into my decision making and we promised school would not get in the way of what we want for family, I can put school on pause.

When we think of having another… we’re like hmm… life is so good right now! We do what we want basically, have fulfilling careers, and don’t really HAVE to sacrifice. Our house is the perfect size, we have a great kid…

We want to decide whether we’re going to be OAD or try for another sooner rather than later. If we have 2 i don’t want a GIANT age gap… I also would prefer not to be dealing with a baby in my 40s.

Anyway just here to post my thoughts since I don’t know anyone else in this situation. Would love to connect with other only children with only children.

Resources for learning SAS

Hi, I’m not a biostatician, I am a health policy researcher entering the second year of my PhD. I am most comfortable with STATA and R, but some of my Epi/Bio classes require that we use SAS. I also want to be familiar enough with it for claims analysis.

My goal is to get more comfortable with SAS this summer before I start my Fall semester. Any recommendations for a free or relatively inexpensive ($50-150ish) course or materials for me to get familiar? I’ve checked out the UCLA materials and plan on on of the courses from the SAS website, but would appreciate recommendations.

Thanks!
