I've always been struggling with properly recording my dreams since when I wake from one I just feel way too drowsy to properly record anything. I have diagnosed autism and ADHD and had a burnout a few years ago, with some bad bouts of insomnia. Now I sleep reasonably well most of the time but I wake up at least once during the night which seems to be a normal thing. I think I also have some aphantasia, but I do sometimes have lucid dreams and sometimes ones that I presume were actually AKEs, but they're usually not fully lucid, and they mostly happen spontaneously.
My method so far has been to consciously remember the dream after waking up as best as I can, basically retelling the dream in my mind, and then in the dark scribbling down a few keywords on a piece of paper that remind me of the dream in the morning via association. This used to work reasonably well enough, but it has stopped working recently for some reason. Now I look at the paper and still have no clue what I dreamed. This could be a side effect of just worse sleep quality during summer, so it might get better once it's over.
I don't want to switch on the lights after I wake up from a dream and write proper dream diary because I fear that would make me wide awake and make it harder to fall asleep again. After suffering from insomnia and burnout I am still afraid of not getting enough sleep, as even light sleep deprivation ruins my day.
I tried recording my voice, but in the drowsy state it's almost impossible for me to properly form sentences and speak them out aloud in a clear voice. No idea if that's an autism thing but taking my inner dream image and describing it in coherent sentences often feels like an almost impossible mental task. And even while I'm wide awake sometimes I can not find any words to describe an inner dream image.
I'm a bit at my wits end how to find a good way for dream recording, been thinking about creating some sort of writer deck (see r/writerDeck) that would let me write in the dark on a keyboard without needing to switch on the light but just a dim screen in dark mode. I do record my dreams digitally anyway.
Do you have similar issues? How did you solve them? Do you have any advice or good ideas?
The Seance of Blake Manor is a superb detective game with an eerie haunting atmosphere, I'm looking for other games with a similar atmosphere.
Preferrably games on the quieter and subtler side, atmospheric, story-driven, no gore, no horrifying monsters or zombie hordes, no survival mechanics while being hunted, and absolutely no jumpscares please.
