Trouble with an HP Officejet 6700 Premium

This printer belonged to my grandpa, and I brought it from his house since my canon Pixma MG5200 stopped working a few months ago. This printer hasn't been used in years, and I bought new ink for it to see if it still worked. There were old cartridges still in the printer, but I couldn't print since the black cartridge was empty. Before I put the ink in, I was still able to go to the home menu and do everything, (connect to the internet, see the ink levels etc.) but only after putting in the new cartridges did I get the error message. Turning the printer off and back on didn't fix the issue, is there anything else I can do without taking it somewhere to be fixed?
