New York City in Men In Black 1997-2026 (Coney Island pics from MIB 3 from 2012, set in 1969)

  1. MIB HQ is the ventilation building for Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

  2. Queens-Midtown Tunnel on the Manhattan side.

  3. Unisphere at World’s Fair in Queens.

  4. New York State Pavilion at World’s Fair in Queens.

  5. Coney Island.

  6. Coney Island Wonder Wheel.

Learning about New York history and the World’s Fair was interesting because I realize Men In Black is kind of a comedy about New York itself with the Pavilion looking like UFOs, and the little metal ball causing the 1977 blackout…

CBGB punk rock and new wave club in Bowery, New York City, 1976 - 2026

The Runaways in 1976, an all girl band and teenagers whose rapid thrust into the rock industry left an interesting mark and a unique style that blended proto-metal, punk/proto-punk, and glam. It is unclear who took the photo, but it is very likely to have been during their first performance on the East Coast in August 1976. CBGB was frequented by many bands including Blondie, Ramones, Talking Heads, and more. Now it is an expensive rock clothing store…

I visited CBGB and Joey Ramone sign

I wore my biker jacket, tucked Ramones shirt, and loosened black necktie. In the summer heat. I also visited Rockaway Beach, but not much there.

VW Beetle 4 door models and shooting brake

I couldn’t get Gemini to generate a back view of a shooting brake without it looking like the swept back roof of the regular Beetle.

The Rathskeller, Boston, Massachusetts, 1980s - 6 June 2026

The Rathskeller was a popular rock venue in Boston, Massachusetts that was frequented by punk bands and operated between 1974-1997. The building was torn down and replaced with a luxury hotel. Behind, the parking lot was mostly replaced with a parking garage for the hotel. In photo 2, the back of the hotel is the whitish colored building, and this is where the Rathskeller was. In photo 3, I overlayed a photo of the back of the Rathskeller to show how it would have looked like. The photo was taken by Glen DePietro on Facebook sometime in the mid-1980s. This layout is confirmed by a YouTube video in this location titled "punks outside The Rat."

City of London viewed from Waterloo Bridge, Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang, 1982 - 2020 (not my photo)

https://preview.redd.it/rivscdg9kr7h1.png?width=1422&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b64d81b8d789ec64b635a2f1875eda0324bae81

Photo dated November 2020 and was taken by Souwester147 on TripAdvisor. Back on the Chain Gang was released in 1982, and the video shows Chrissie Hynde leaning on Waterloo Bridge with a perfect view of London's financial district. The tallest building in 1982 is the current Tower 42. On the left is St. Paul's Cathedral. The building behind Chrissie's head is likely what is now known as St. Helen's, which is entirely blocked by modern skyscrapers. On the right is the old tower that stood at 20 Fenchurch Street, which was torn down and replaced by Walkie Talkie skyscraper, the weird shaped one.

Blondie - Union City Blue 1979 - 2024 (not my photo)

Thank you, u/Prokansal for the amazing photo of Midtown Manhattan. I have cropped it to match the music video of Blondie - Union City Blue. The video shot is unfortunately washed out but you can at least get an idea of what the skyline looked like back then. The most prominent buildings:

- Current UBS building partially hidden behind the Allianz building.

- XYZ buildings on Sixth Avenue.

- One Astor Plaza in Times Square, first building on the left partially hidden by Clem Burke's head.

- In front of Clem Burke would be Pier 86 where the USS Intrepid is docked. In 1979, she wasn't there yet. She would arrive in 1982.

Hudson Yards to the left outside the photo was not built up as we know it now with the tall glass skyscrapers. The Empire State Building is to the right outside the photo. I ran this screenshot through AI a few times to help me identify the buildings. Gemini suggests the stuff above Clem's head could be a crane. The Chrysler building would have occupied that spot, but from this angle it seems the Chrysler Building wouldn't appear any taller than One Astor Plaza.

The music video shows the band playing and a building behind them says Union Dry Dock. The current location of Union Dry Dock is south of this location, and AI says Union Dry Dock had moved from this northern location to the current southern location, but I couldn't confirm this info. Currently, this view can be seen from the Weehawken, NJ waterfront near the Weehawken 9/11 memorial.

SpeedX

Tons of people hanging around and sorting through packages, kids playing around on the floor, older kids helping move packages, looks like a bomb went off.

The silliest pieces of lore

As I started reading Ghosts of Onyx and finished the other Nylund novels there were some things that were just outright silly in the lore. But I love Halo so whatever, right? I just thought it would be funny to start a discussion.

  1. First of all, most people here know about Chief and Locke’s fight in Halo 5 and how it was depicted. Nothing else to say here.

  2. The 30mm chain gun is a very prominent weapon. But for some reason, and the games depict this very well, the gun is INTENTIONALLY wildly inaccurate at long ranges. So what’s the point? The military came in and said, “Yeah, I want this gun to not be effective in the ranges that we actually need unless someone is stupid enough to put their head 5 feet away from it.” Just strap some old Browning machine gun from Earth on a Warthog and you could probably hit stuff.

  3. Post traumatic vocal disarticulation where you lose your voice under intense stress. Spartan Lucy suffered from it during the younger years of SPARTAN-IIIs. I actually chuckled at this. And when the book said “those were her last words” I thought something worse happened out of nowhere.

  4. C-12 can blow a hole in two meters of solid titanium armor and is the size of a medium size backpack. Very skeptical. We need to invest in that stuff put that stuff in missiles. If somehow that were true, that much destruction could destroy Covenant shields with one shot.

I love Halo. Now that a lot of people use AI, it’s interesting to see that sometimes the books feel accurate when describing how humans and AI work together. It’s very interesting how they could depict that relationship 25 years ago. Anyone else have a silly piece of lore?

Muscle Machines Z diecast

I found some of my old diecasts and I spent all afternoon creating the decals on my Z that looks like this generic photo. Happy with it so far even if the proportions are off a bit.

Old livery.

In Forza Horizon 6, I remade my Daytona Demon livery, named after a song by an old rock 'n' roller, Suzi Quatro, who I like because of her attitude-driven explicit glam rock. She has the swagger of Elvis Presley with the screams of Little Richard. I remade my Gibson and Fender guitar logos from scratch and now they actually look closer to the real thing. The orange is supposed to resemble Suzi Quatro's Gibson bass. I added a pale-yellow trim that fades to white in the back that resembles the trim on the guitar's edges. This hopefully gives the livery more of a fluid design and not just end in plain black like the old one.

I went 414 miles on a single tank in the Integra

Really only possible with comfort mode that limits the throttle response but is totally manageable, especially when people around here merge on the highway 15 mph below the speed limit. Mixed highway and road use. Filled up around 10.62 gallons out of the 12.4 gallon fuel tank, so I still had plenty of distance in reserve. Notification of low gas comes on when the range says like 42 miles.

Halo: CE and Shiela Polanski from First Strike

I remember barely reading the first few chapters of First Strike a long time ago when I was a kid, but now I am currently reading it again (I'm at the point where John is reunited with his team)! I'm pretty sure I got this idea the first time I started reading First Strike that the Pelican pilot, Polanski, could possibly be the pilot in Pvt. Jenkins' recording in Halo: CE, as we learn the pilot who drops his squad with Sgt. Johnson was also female. I just kind of juggled with that thought at the time, that it would've been cool if Polanski and Johnson had reunited and stuck together. Then I found this 11 year old post about it where the OP actually dives into nerdy lore detail. I know First Strike probably wasn't conceived by the time Halo: CE came out, and lots of characters were unnamed in that game as the lore was new. I just thought this would be something cool to discuss, and I think I came up with it independently of the Internet back when I was a kid (I could be wrong, I just know I had this idea for a while mostly because of Sgt. Johnson and the female Pelican pilot connection). The book is very nice to revisit and eventually finish. Eventually I need to finish my unfinished Contact Harvest from my childhood after the Nylund books...
