Opinions on hikers on single track?
I went for a walk on some single track trails today with my wife and my dog and during the whole hike I couldn't shake the feeling that I was doing something wrong lol.
I constantly was aware of my surroundings and yielded to any bikers.
The single track here is soooo nice and such nice trails into the wooded areas.
Tips for going from square taper to hollowtech 2
Very familiar with removal/installation and general experience with square taper cranks and bb.
Do not have any experience with hollowtech external bb. Any tips you guys can share before I install it?
I have ordered the following:
Shimano Cues FC-U6000 crank set
Shimano BB-MT501
16-notch bb tool
Shimano Crank assembly FC-960/760 Ultegra TL-FC16 (cap tool)
Clicking sound
I took apart the crankset, BB, cleaned re-greased bb, crank arm bolts, chain ring bolts, torqued to spec, greased seat post, and axle handles, cassette is new and torqued/greased.
Tried different pedals.
Strange thing is that this noise didn't appear until after I installed a surly corner bar and rerouted a new shift cable to the back derailer.
After I reassembled greased Bb and cranks I thought the noise was gone and fixed but came back after half a mile then seems to get worse the further I go in a session.
Sound does not happen when not pedaling, sound still happens when pedaling off the saddle.
Sound does not happen when moving pedal in stand.
Happens in all gears. Seems to happen more with more load than lighter but depends.
Rotational "click" under load

Didn't start occuring until installing surly corner bars.
Re-ran a new shift cable. Derailer seems indexed fine.
Other changes that happened prior to bar install and noise include 1x conversion, new chain ring, new rear cassette, new chain, amongst other things.
Noise does not happen when in bike stand and pedals moving.
Noise happens the most under load in every gear then sometimes like 10% of the time does not occur.
Usually happens under a revolution. It is a lighter type of click than a messed up bearing on a pedal for example. I had that on another bike and replaced pedals and noise was gone.
I tried both pedals on this bike and it's not it.
Everything is properly torqued.
Crank arms don't move laterally.
Noise not coming from fork/stem when isolated with pressure.
Ridden while standing to isolate saddle post noise.
Ridden without hands on bars to isolate that too.
The noises seems to grow and silence depending on its mood tbh it's not consistent.
2012 giant talon w/ surly corner bar and 1x conversion amongst other updates
Did 67 miles on this bad boy today. Thinking of upgrading to a gravel bicycle. Advice?
This is a giant talon 2012 29r 2.
Running maxxis rekon race 2.35
New shaming bb, new Shimano cassette, new chain ring and a 1x conversion. New stem, new brake pads, pedals, chain
This trip was I would say 60% uneven pavement/neighborhood/downtown. 30% dirt/gravel 10% root infested single track
2012 giant talon 2. 3x to 1x conversion, new cassette, chain, bb, maxxis rekon race 2.35
Did a 38t 1x conversion on my 2012 giant talon 29r 2
11t and 13t are a bit too worn down. Have a Shimano cassette in the mail.
Came from the original 3x. Enjoying this a lot more. Way more smooth and way less "this is kind of working correctly" from the front derailer and chainrings
New maxxis rekon race tire in comparison to the original small block 8 on my 2012 giant talon 29r 2
Still building but just installed new tires, bb, cranks. New chain is next
Tell me more about torque wrenches

Novice here, but I thought you would all enjoy this story.
I replaced the crankset on my fixed gear/singlespeed bike the other day. I hand-tightened the 8mm bolt. I went for a ride around the neighborhood, and it felt fine.
I decided to go out for a longer ride. It was supposed to be 20-ish miles out and the same back. About 5 miles in, I noticed a knocking feeling in the cranks. Then, around 9 miles out, the rubber seal around the 8mm bolt fell out. I stopped to pick it up and noticed the left crank arm was wobbly.
I transformed into a hiker for three miles as I walked back to a bike repair station. I hand-tightened the crank arm and jumped back on the bike.
I kept pedaling, then about half a mile later I felt and heard grinding coming from the left crank arm. A few more miles in, the arm became wobbly again.
I turned into a hiker again and made it to another bike repair station. Same story. I tightened the bolt and had about four miles left until I got back home.
I jumped back on the bike and pedaled on. Same story. About half a mile in, the grinding came back and got worse. The arm became wobbly, and I started hiking through the woods. I decided to jump back on the bike and pedal with just my right leg. I made it fairly far until I got close to home and couldn't take it anymore, so I started pedaling with both legs. I could feel and see the left crank arm sliding off the bottom bracket.
It sounded like it was in pain. Anyways, I made it all the way to the front of my house, where the left crank arm finally decided to fall off. Needless to say, I now need a new crank arm and a new bottom bracket.
Happy Fourth!
Do you guys do repair and upgrades yourself or go to a shop?
I have a 2012 giant talon 29r and want some new handlebars, tune up, amongst some other things.
My knowledge is lacking, but I can always research online for easier upgrades like handlebars. The biggest caveat is not having the correct tools.
Unrelated to MTB but I wanted to swap out the crankset or fix the stripped threading on my singlespeed and it ends up costing more to do it yourself than to go to a shop.
So I'm curious for people that seldom tinker, do you take it upon yourself for upgrades and repairs or do you take it to a bike shop?
Edit: I see everyone so far backing doing it yourself and learning. Do y'all recommend those $50ish amazon bike repair tool kits?
My do everything bike
Biked down to the park, went for a run. I just threw some brakes on it. Used to be fixed gear bylut my knee got jammed on it once and it gave me two weeks of pain so never want to risk that again
