Metal band sustainability (impossible)

Metal band sustainability (impossible)

Hey people,

I recently read this article from the drummer of Tesseract.

https://jaypostones.substack.com/p/what-does-it-feel-like-to-have-made

Kinda made me sad that such a charismatic musician cannot be in the position after all these years with his band to be able to make a living off of music.
I get it that we've all been impacted from covid and a lot of bands started diversifying in some ways like the Perphery guys, but idk how long can you do it..
It just doesn't feel right to have music as a passion project (on the other hand you can't let yourself be in misery and somehow need to make ends meet)
Curious to see what are your thoughts on this and what could be a solution to this in the future with ai, etc.

Metal band looking for local acts in Budapest

Hey people, hope you're doing extremely well out there !!

Me and my band Nonlinear (metalcore act) are booking some touring dates for late February 2027 and one location we'd love to hit is Budapest, Hungary.

We are searching for 2-3 local acts somewhat similar to ours and generally in the metal spectrum, so feel free to add any links below and we chat.

Have a good day !

Mixing & Mastering (Free Mix Sample)

Hey everyone!

I'm a mixing and mastering engineer specializing in **rock and metal.**

I'm looking to work with new artists and bands on upcoming music. If you're currently recording or have finished tracking, I'd love to help you with finilizing the song.

I'm also offering a free mix sample for one song so you can hear how your music sounds before committing.

If you're interested, send me:

* A link to your music (if available) * Your multitracks (or let me know when they'll be ready) * A few reference bands you're aiming for

VSX vs HD 800

Hey guys,

Lately, I've been going back and forth between the two VSX models, especially since the open-back version was released, and I'm curious to hear what people think about them.

I've also been looking into the HD 800 because of everything I've read about their clarity, but I haven't had the chance to try them myself. I've seen a lot of people recommend sticking with one pair of headphones and learning them inside out, so I've been wondering whether it would make more sense to invest in a high-end pair like the HD 800.

At the same time, the VSX system is really appealing because I don't have a well-treated room, and the closed-back version would also be useful for mixing in noisier environments.

Maybe it's an unfair comparison, but I'm hoping for someone have tested both of them to give some tips.

Thanks in advance !!!

Listening back to my awful Performance

Hey people,

My metal band recently played a gig, and we recorded the entire set so we could listen back to the raw multitracks afterward.

We all use in-ear monitors, and I personally keep my volume fairly low to medium—low enough that I can still clearly hear what's happening on stage and in the room. For me, they're as much about hearing protection as monitoring.

My mix is also pretty minimal. I cut out the drums and bass completely and only keep the click, samples, my vocals, and my guitar. Since I'm running mono, I find this gives me a cleaner mix.

The weird thing is that during the set it never really feels like we're making that many mistakes, especially me and the other guitarist, even though there are plenty of sections where we need to be tightly synced. Listening back afterward, though, I feel like my performance was pretty rough.

I think part of it is that live sound tends to get blurry in smaller venues, and playing while standing, moving around, and actually performing feels very different from rehearsing. There’s also a lot of stage rumble, low-end buildup from the venue, wireless IEM latency, and the limitations of a mono mix. All of that seems to work against playing as cleanly as possible.

What I'm struggling with is figuring out how to improve. During the show, things usually feel much tighter than they actually are on the recordings. Because of that, I often have a hard time believing audience members when they say things like, "You sounded great" or "The band was really tight."

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what helped you perform more consistently and cleanly in a live setting?

(*Sorry for posting this here, I couldn't post this on "live sound" fsr)

Thanks in advance 🙏
