Beware The Pitch

We are in Minnesota and my son's U14 team played in the USA Cup mid-July which was pretty awesome. However, the Saturday before was my son's team's last practice of the season, which brought about the Players v Parents game. Most parents elected not to play; I was like, heck yeah I'll play.

Keep in mind we're old before we realize it. I'm 47 years old. 30 minutes in, I'm running after a ball while playing right back very poorly, and all at once, I'm on the ground. Ambulance. X-Rays. Orthopedic MRI.

Ruptured patellar tendon in my right knee. Surgery the next week.

I'm now a month post-surgery. Things are healing but I can't do anything to speed things up. I'm still at least 6 weeks from driving. No physical therapy can start until I can bend to 90 degrees, which is still 4 weeks from now.

I'll attack PT and I have a lot of hope of where I'll be come 2027. But for now - it's rough. I post this so others can consider whether or not they want to participate in these athletic competitions. We all feel like we can way longer than maybe we should. So for all you moms and dads - it's okay to stay on the sidelines. You might just be protecting your mobility.

Made the team!

Sorry, this is a dumb post. But I’m going to post it anyway because I am so freaking proud of my kid. He is not an elite player. He is 13 and played his last two seasons at the lowest level of club soccer in Minnesota. With the age change, he gets to repeat U14 this season.

Guys, he made the SECOND lowest level for this season. He is going to be so happy when I tell him when he wakes up tomorrow morning. I don’t know how I’m going to get to sleep tonight because my heart is bursting with joy for him. He has worked so hard as a latecomer to soccer; he really deserves this. Just busting with joy.

Being a dad just becomes more fun as they age

It's true. And I say this as a guy who loved (sometimes) being a dad to a baby and a toddler too. Those are (sometimes) fun times! But it just gets better as they age, in my opinion.

My son is 13 now. He's headed off to soccer tryouts in a little bit. The kid who swore he would never play a team sport, or a sport with a ball, got hooked on soccer at age 10 and hasn't looked back.

The kid who was borderline addicted to his iPad in those mid-elementary years hasn't even touched his iPad in probably 3 days (he does have a phone that he's on at a normal level). Yesterday he got up, walked the dog, mowed the lawn, and biked to the grocery store a couple miles away to buy stuff to make a cake with me. Then met his friends at the soccer field to kick it around.

He's a joy to parent. It's just fun to see who he has become and who he continues to develop into. Those early years can be tough - just stick with it. Build the relationship with them. It gets really cool as they get older.

3 accidents in a week

I can’t believe I’m posting here. I (47m) think my last pee accident was when I was 9, and then boom, here I am 38 years later and I’ve peed my pants 3 times in 6 days. Twice was just a little bit, but last night was, well, significant.

I ripped my knee up on Saturday and I’m scheduled for surgery on Monday. So I’m sure some of it is just moving more slowly to get to the bathroom in time. But it’s not like I was constantly having close calls before. I did change blood pressure medications about 6 weeks ago…I wonder if that’s causing some of this too?

I am now legitimately worried about accidents, especially post-surgery. I’m just wondering if I should buy a small pack of adult diapers just in case? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

My Tribe Is The Best - Race For The Cure

Breast Cancer, you fucked with the wrong people. We raised over $13K and we showed up. It's been nearly two years and this tribe of mine walk this shitty reality with me.

It doesn't make things better. But it does help to know I've got people holding me up.

My Lisa would have been so happy to see today. People supporting people, families supporting families. I lost the love of my life, but I'm the luckiest guy in the world.

I'm 7.5 weeks from 2 years.....not a newbie. I'm really doing okay most of the time.

But man...I can really spiral. Like I did tonight. I'm traveling for work, 13 year old is at home with grandma and uncle, he's okay. I went for the team dinner tonight. 50 people or so at a brewery, and I was having a really good time.....until I wasn't.

I was never like this before. And I'm not even sure what triggered it. And it's not the first time since she died. But I had to leave. I snuck out and went back to my room.

I realize there are many introverts among us who would say "yeah! good for you!' But that is SO not me. I'm the social guy. And I was today! Until.....I wasn't. I hate it. I just wanted to go back to my room and cry. Is it because I'm around people who don't and can't even understand? I just don't know. I'm just feeling like shit.

13-year-old boy....I'm a single dad due to being a widower. He got an A on his health assignment today. Found this within. Super dusty here.....

Explain why the individuals chosen are a part of your "Parachute of Support".

Because my dad helps me feel better on a bad day.
