Flowers in Cass’ journey

Cass’ journey really is tracked by her relationship with flowers. I know lots of us know this already but I thought I’d juxtapose some of the panels.

One of her formative memories is that she helped rip apart the lives of a man delivering flowers to their partner (City of Light). In her first series (Batgirl 2000), the first panel is of her trying to put together the puzzle pieces of a rose. She buys her own rose and learns to take care of it. She even gifts a different flower to David Cain for Father’s day.

Batgirl 17 (2026) kind of wraps it up a little with the lotus flower for its qualities instead. The rose was her trauma and seeing the beauty of life, deeper emotional attachments that she never had and that she shattered or her need for redemption. The flower for her dad was picked as a more general gift she would imagine people give to their parents.

The lotus is her own persevering sense of justice and emerging from the darkness. So it’s a big move away from the rose focus. Everybody killing each other over flowers in the first arc of the current run must also have been ironic.

The most recent arc also has the forget me not, of course, continuing the theme into new territory in Victoria but not of her choosing of course.

Jim…you are really lucky you are Babs’ father (Joker #12 2021)

Cass’ face is so offended and “Did you both forget about No Man’s Land?”

Jim is so nonchalant too, just hands behind his back watching Harvey get tossed as a demonstration like he just wanted to see what Babs’ protege could do.

Cass and Damian banter (Robin 2021 #15)

Cass shows up briefly in Damian’s solo series to tease that she would have won the tournament on Lazarus Island instead of Damian if she was around. So a slight update to confirm that they are on more easy terms than Gates of Gotham, New52, etc. Also Steph definitely not a vegetarian!

Only ever crumbs here but still so much potential for stories!

I miss midnight snacks and chats between Babs and Cass (Batgirl 2000s)

Before being her protégé, Cass was Bab’s friend and courier. I know there have been team ups like Batgirls and BoP, but I really hope someone gets to write more character stories of them hanging out together one on one specifically.
