Does our city offer a "Citizen Academy" or local government civic program?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking into ways to better understand how local government actually operates—things like how city council meetings are structured, how board/commission appointments work, and how to navigate agenda packets.

I know some cities run a "Citizen Academy" or municipal education program for residents, but I wasn't sure if we have anything like that locally?

If we don't have an official city program, are there any local civic groups, community workshops, or non-profits that host sessions on how to effectively participate in council meetings? Thanks!

My Thoughts: Ottumwa

Did a day trip from CR primarily to try the Canteen sandwich and check out what else the town had to offer.

The vibe definitely reminded me of a mix between Davenport and Burlington. Both for the river town main streets but moreso Burlington for the nature rolling hills aspect. We drove in on Dahlonega Rd and went south on Jefferson - that first impression was really cool.

To grow and sustain, I believe Ottumwa needs to lean into three things over the next 5-10 years:

Nature - give your residents as many family friendly green spaces as possible. I see there is a big improvement project for the Market Street Landing.

Business - you can get to the heart of Chicago in 6 stops or about 5 hrs on Amtrak - very few Iowa cities have what you have!! Find ways to beef up Business degrees out of Indian Hills CC using the Hofman name and provide opportunities to other cities. It's a 1.5 hour drive to DSM too.

Education and Mobility - Indian Hills CC campus is beautiful and I think punches above its weight. Lean into this, make the connection to downtown better and add bike trails, become escooter/ebike friendly.. I think if you open up your city with better mobility options people will feel that freedom.

I honestly enjoyed the people and vibe but definitely felt things needed a boost or TLC.

Take care, Ottumwa :)

How's the weather year round?

Interested in moving.

How many days would you say are humid during the summer?

How many days do you find yourself getting cabin fever in the winter?

If we completely reimagined aggressive inline competitions from the ground up, what would make 12-year-olds lose their minds?

If you had total freedom to redesign a blade competition specifically to recruit 8-to-15-year-olds and build a sustainable youth pipeline, what would you change? What makes a kid instantly want to grab a pair of skates?

Would you pay for someone to turn a Pinterest room into an actual shopping list?

My 13-year-old daughter loves interior design and recently I was working on decorating our 5-year-old son's room with a golf theme. I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and found plenty of ideas I liked, but then realized a hard part for me was figuring out where to actually buy everything and pulling it together within a budget.

That got us wondering:

If you could send someone a theme or decoration idea and they gave you back a complete shopping list with product links, pricing, and recommendations that fit your budget, is that something you'd pay for?

Or is the shopping and sourcing part something you enjoy doing yourself?

Just trying to figure out whether this is a real problem for busy parents and whether it could be a viable small business idea for a teenager interested in design.

Would love your honest thoughts. Thanks!

Please be extra cautious of pedestrians—especially kids—while driving

Just a friendly reminder for everyone driving around town—please be extra careful and watch for pedestrians, especially kids. I’ve noticed way too many close calls lately, and it’s honestly starting to worry me. Kids are out walking, riding bikes, playing, and they don’t always think before darting into the street. It only takes one distracted moment behind the wheel for something terrible to happen. I really don’t want to wake up and see a story in the news about a child getting hit by a car. But if we’re not more careful, it feels like we’re due for one of those heartbreaking stories—and that’s completely preventable. Please slow down, stay off your phone, and keep your eyes up—especially in neighborhoods and near parks/schools. Let’s keep our kids and neighbors safe.

How do you listen to Cedar Rapids Kernels games on local radio?

I’m trying to listen to Cedar Rapids Kernels games on local radio. I’ve heard they’re supposed to be on AM 1450 or 93.1 FM, but whenever I tune in, the game is never on. Am I missing something? Do they only broadcast certain games, or is there a differrnt station I should be using?

If you could remove all the unknowns before visiting a new place. So you could fully enjoy it.

What kinds of attractions or points of interest would you investigate first.

What are the make or break places or details you always look into beforehand what helps guarantee the best experience for you when exploring somewhere unfamiliar?
