Book cover design for authors with a smaller budget

I’m a book cover designer, and I’ve been spending some of my free time making concept covers. I was thinking I could direct that time to helping authors who might need a cover but don’t have the funds.

I have a few spaces for this, so if you’re working towards publishing and find yourself in that position, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to hear about your book and see if I can help.

How do I make finishing a book less dependent on whether I’m currently excited about it?

I completed a first draft for an MG fantasy two years ago. This year, I decided I would revise it and start querying. Instead, when I sat down to review what I had written, I was appalled. One of my biggest weaknesses, as someone who grew up somewhat gifted, is the impossible standards I set for myself. Seeing such poor writing reflected back at me was disheartening, and I did the only thing that made sense to me: I started another project.
The concept for this book was larger than life. In many ways, the ideation stage is the most addictive part of writing for me. I spent hours in a state of delirium, excited about the story that would finally emerge with all the depth I imagined for it. As usual, I set unrealistic standards for myself, even when it came to the timeline. I expected to complete it in two months. As time went by, I did cut out all the unnecessary plot lines which made it easier to execute.
I also decided to adopt an edit as you go method, which I know isn’t recommended. In my mind, I thought it would save me from completely hating the book when I eventually sat down to reread it, and make the editing process somewhat manageable.
I’m about 45,000 words in, but I haven’t written anything for nearly a month, and I’m afraid I’m just abandoning this book as well. Not to make any excuses but I also have been diagnosed with adhd and I wonder if this is the shiny object syndrome.

Regardless, I need to stay on track.

For writers on a budget

I’ve been thinking about how many writers get all the way to the publishing stage and then have to put their book on hold because they can’t afford a professional cover.

I’m a writer first myself, with some experience in design and I’ve been spending a lot of my free time making concept covers just for the fun of it. So I thought, why not use some of that time to help authors who might need a cover but don’t have hundreds to spend on one?

I have a few spaces for this, so if you’re working towards publishing and find yourself in that position, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to hear about your book and see if I can help.

I’m mostly interested in speculative fiction, literary fiction, contemporary fiction, and some poetry. I don’t currently design fantasy covers.

Concept Book Cover Redesign Series

A collection of concept book covers created last month. Moving forward, I’m focusing on weird girl lit redesigns, as this aesthetic aligns closely with my illustration style.

I designed a series of book covers

I’m hoping to work more in book and editorial design, so I’d really appreciate any feedback on the covers, especially typography, hierarchy, and how well they communicate the feeling of each book.
These are spec. designs, not official covers.

Designing covers for books I read last month.

A few book covers I designed recently based on how they made me feel.

I deleted your number. I regret it.

A,

I might be bored or lonely, because after however many months, for the first time, I cant stop thinking about you. I lost (deleted in a fit of rage) your number so I will never be able to reach out. But maybe you will. Maybe you won’t. One of us usually does.

If I still had it, I definitely would. We both know I don’t have enough shame when it comes to you.

I miss you. You were my best friend. I miss talking to you about anything, and that feeling of absolute safety. I feel lost, like I have no other home outside of myself anymore.

Hope you’re doing well.

X,
H.
