Scotland(?) car broke down after being seen three company wont refund for later repaires at different garage

(posting on behalf of my mum) We bought the car in december in wales and it broke down in February in the midlands, we were on our way to a refuge in Scotland.

The garage we bought it from had it 3 times for a recurring light on the dashboard and occasionally juddering of rhe car. The light appeared DAYS after we bought the car, we took it back the first time and they said it just needed some driving and was due to a build up of something from when they serviced the car.

Well the light kept appearing and the juddering kept happening, the garage's response was the same, that it just needed driving.

They kept the car for hours each time they had it which made things harder for my mum as she has a kid in high-school (13m) and and me (17f) but luckily i didnt do much at the time.

The last time the garage had the car was February and we told them we were going to scotland on holiday because nobody could know we were fleeing (even family), in the midlands, on the way to scotland, on the motorway the car filled with a fishy smell and started juddering where my mum lost control of the car breifly, luckily it stopped juddering and we pulled into an SOS bay (we were travelling with us and a cat and a dog).

So my mums breakdown company paid for a hotel and paid for an alternative vehicle and we took the car to a landrover garage near where we broke down and repairs cost \~£3,000.

Landrover confirmed what the warning light was for (something with the manifold) and the car had \~7 faults when it broke down.

The car has had no issues since but my mum wants the garage/finance company to pay for the repairs. They claim it was an unauthorized repair and she should have asked them for permission for a different garage to do the repair but because of the circumstances of our move to Scotland, nobody could know until march.

My mum went to consumer advice scotland and they agreed with my mum and said to go through the complaints process and that shes entitled to a refund and to return the car (which is what she wants) and advised to go to the financial ombudsman.

So my mum went to the financial ombudsman and has been conversing with an investigator who says it was an unauthorized repair and that there were no exceptional circumstances and doesnt seem to have paid attention to the evidence my mum provided so my mum has said for it to go further, to an ombudsman.

We are just wondering where she actually stands legally and what you all think.
