About to send this to managers — anything here that would make you stop reading?

Looking for feedback on the query letter itself, not the premise or logline. I've been through several drafts and I think it's close, but I'd rather hear "that phrase would stop me cold" before I send 30 of these.

Hi [Name],

I'm a television writer with credits on Nickelodeon's Pinwheel (part of the Peabody Award-winning series) and Marvel's Spidey Super Stories.

Maiden USA is my original family sci-fi series.

Miss Congeniality meets Resident Alien.

Logline: A teenage girl raised off-world as a warrior must compete in a beauty pageant and become the face of aggressively patriotic Made-in-USA products to save humanity from an alien invasion.

If you're short on time, here's a link to the five-page teaser: [link]

If it resonates, I'd be glad to send the pilot and series materials.

Thank you for your time.

Teaser script for a half-hour sci-fi pilot. Curious how it reads to filmmakers, not just writers.

Maiden USA. A teenage girl raised off-world as a warrior must win a beauty pageant to stop an alien invasion.

This is the teaser, the opening pages before the title card. It's built around a hard tonal swing: a deadpan commercial for a patriotic cheese grater, then a match cut into a space chase and crash landing.

Curious how the tonal shift reads from a production standpoint, does it feel like something with a clear visual identity, or does it feel like it's fighting itself? Also interested in whether the structure (cold open, match cut, action sequence, crash, black) reads as filmable on a reasonable budget, or like it's overreaching for a pilot.

Teaser for my half-hour sci-fi pilot looking for feedback

Title: Maiden USA

Genre: Family Sci-Fi

Format: Half-Hour Series

Comps: Miss Congeniality meets War of the Worlds

Logline: A teenage girl raised off-world as a warrior must reluctantly enter a beauty pageant and become a brand ambassador for aggressively patriotic Made in USA products to stop an alien invasion.

Looking for feedback on tone and structure before I take this further. There are also materials on my substack that detail the world, the characters profiles, the lore and my own background,

Looking for a path to get my sci-fi comedy pilot in front of Amazon

I wrote a half-hour family sci-fi comedy pilot. A teenage girl raised off-world as a warrior must reluctantly enter a beauty pageant and become a brand ambassador for aggressively patriotic Made in USA products to stop an alien invasion. Think Miss Congeniality meets War of the Worlds.

Amazon feels like the right home for this, especially given the IP potential (merchandise, book tie-ins, the whole thing). But I don't have a clear path to get material in front of them without representation.

Has anyone here had luck getting things looked at by Amazon directly, or is a manager basically required at that point?

Specific feedback welcome on whether the opening works and whether the tone holds throughout.

Rewrote my pilot's cold open. Looking for feedback on a match cut that has to do a lot of work.

My pilot currently opens in space with a spacecraft approaching Earth. I'm replacing it with this. The cut has to establish that this is the same person in both places, that she takes both situations equally seriously, and that the show is going to be both genuinely funny and genuinely strange.

Does it land? Is the match cut earning its place or is it trying too hard?

FADE IN:

INT. MAIDEN USA STUDIO - DAY

A kitchen set straight out of a fever dream. Stars and stripes everywhere. Eagle motifs on every surface. Aggressively American.

ASA (17, tiara slightly askew, red rubber gloves) stands behind a gleaming counter. ZOZO, a dog, sits beside her, one paw resting on the counter in solemn solidarity.

OFF CAMERA: Three. Two. One.

ASA
Let's talk about cheese.

She lifts a wedge of cheddar.

ASA (CONT'D)
Who among us isn't terrified at the thought of choking to death on a piece of cheese?

Zozo growls gently, grave and supportive.

ASA (CONT'D)
Cheese strangulation -- or cheesefixation, as it's professionally called...

Emergency rooms nationwide report a surge in cheesefixation cases.

She places the wedge into the Eezy Peezy Cheezy.

ASA (CONT'D)
That fear ends today.

She spins the crank. Cheese flutters down in soft, patriotic curls into a red, white and blue bowl.

ASA (CONT'D)
No foreign microchips. No molybdenum. No rare earths. Just good old-fashioned American know-how and muscle.

(pause)

Let's make America grate again.

(beat)

Tell your children not to place their fingers in the input hopper.

The studio lights blaze on her face.

MATCH CUT TO:

INT. CROUTONIAN SHIP - COCKPIT

The same face. Same intensity. Different light: cold, blue, the glow of deep space.

ASA gazes at the planet filling the viewport below. Blue, green, cloud-wrapped.

ASA
(awed)
I can't believe we're actually here. Where it all began.

A Double Dip into the Doodyverse

I've always been more from the Punch and Judy end of the kids' entertainment spectrum than the Mr. Rogers end. I'll leave it at that.

When I was around eight years old my parents secured me what was then the hottest ticket in show business — a seat in the Peanut Gallery on the Howdy Doody show. I went with my cousin Sheila. They had a contest for who could draw the best picture of a chicken. They held up Sheila's drawing and commented, to considerable laughter, that it looked like a crow.

Sheila's younger brother was watching from home. When he saw us on television he went ballistic.

I won the contest. My prize was a regulation football I could barely hold in two hands. I'm not complaining. But what were they thinking?

After the show, Clarabelle the Clown — who would later become Captain Kangaroo — tried to get me to throw him the football. I wouldn't give it up. I was never invited onto Captain Kangaroo. Then again I didn't watch it.

Years later I was hired to co-write a Howdy Doody revival. The full story — including the song I wrote that never made the cut — is on my Substack if anyone's interested.
