Hyatt Ziva Cancun vs Dreams Playa Mujeres

Planning a family vacation for March or April and trying to choose the best resort for the family. We’ve mainly gotten it narrowed down to these two, but are open to other suggestions.

Budget: around $600/night

Family details: 2 in their 60s, one couple with a 4 year old, one couple with a 2 year old (us). We and the kiddo travel quite a bit but the others do not.

Priorities: really good food, nice beach access and kid friendly pools, updated rooms.

Nice to haves: good room service, actually good coffee, poolside service

Not Needed: childcare services/kids clubs

We’d also considered Ziva Cap Cana but that’s too long of a flight for us from SF with a 2 year old, Xcaret but that was a bit out of budget and the kids aren’t quite old enough to get the full experience from it, and Grand Velas (where we’ve stayed and enjoyed previously) but it’s not in budget.

If anyone has suggestions, I’m all ears. Just trying to plan something nice for the family.

Green or blue?

I have always been pretty sure I have blue eyes but people have told me recently that my son gets his green eyes from me. Just curious which way they lean. Lighting is indoor, inside with cool fluorescents, and outside

Blue or Green?

Encouraged by a recent post, please settle the debate. I always thought I had blue eyes, my license says blue. But my kid has pretty clearly green eyes and I’ve heard from multiple people now that he “gets his green eyes” from me. I don’t see it. I see maybe blue hazel? But I don’t know. Lighting is outdoor, indoor, and under fluorescents.

The End is Here (Phoebe Bridgers inspired knit)

Decided to take a test knitting opportunity to make a little Phoebe Bridgers inspired jacket. Punisher is one of my favorite albums and I Know the End is one of my favorite songs, so I riffed off the lyrics and motifs for some fun duplicate stitching.

This is the Struan from Creabea and I used Rosa Pomar Brusca for the Green and De Rerum Natura Gilliatt for the white. The jacket is the mens fit size 4 and it fits phenomenally. 10/10 jacket. Might remake it with more fun things on the back (Mamdani Campaign logo???) The yarn is fairly rustic (more than their Vovo, my favorite yarn) and toes the line between DK and worsted. If youre alright with wooliness it’s a lovely yarn and ends up very breathable and drapey and even though it was 70 out and I run warm, I wasn’t sweating in the jacket for pics.

Also, the bandana is the Holly Bandana by Susanne Muller in Kelbourne Woolens Mojave.

Give it to me straight folks

Is this what I think it is? I’ve been noticing them around the house the last month but every time I see one I squash it before I manage to get a pic. I’m already taking precautions- yarn is going into the freezer multiple times in batches, otherwise its in airtight containers with moth traps. My only hopes: 1) I haven’t seen any moths or signs of moth damage near my yarn or knitting, which is all at the opposite end of the house from my kitchen table where the moths seem to be: 2) the clothes moth traps haven’t caught anything.

Update on Curing my Dry Eyes

A while back I posted about fixing my chronic dry eyes. I’ll link it below. The good news- they stayed fixed and have only gotten better with less actually less upkeep. I just wanted to reshare this as a resource for people who are going through this and highlight some extra things I noticed that helped that I didn’t highlight in my original post

  1. during my dry eye onset, I had lost quite a bit of weight. I think I genuinely was suffering from some malnutrition from being at a calorie deficit for so long. I can’t say with certainty that gaining so weight back helped, but I don’t think it hurt. I’m back to the mid/upper end of a “healthy” range instead of the very bottom

  2. anemia. Check for anemia. Also corresponding to my onset, my ferritin had absolutely tanked and I got it checked and it was at 3. Within a month of getting my first iron infusion, my dry eye improved A LOT.

  3. hormone levels. So, this might not be super helpful for most people here but I do think it’s worth flagging. I’m a trans man but wasn’t yet on hormones when my MGD started. The hormone levels my body produced on its own were real real off- I had pcos and pmdd and low levels of E but borderline high T (for an afab person) and it was causing all sorts of just weird body issues- psoriasis, hair loss, pelvic floor dysfunction, and I suspect also aggravating the dry eyes. Getting on T and getting to normal sex hormone levels (for a guy in my case) genuinely fixed the remaining dry eye issues I had. I know that testosterone is correlated with more oil production which probably helped and women probably don’t want T unless it’s for menopause reasons lol, but I’d hazard a guess that off kilter hormones from things like pcos could be harmful for dry eyes and it’s worth looking into

Hope this is helpful! Good luck everyone!

Consistent high engagement but low Impressions?

Just trying to sus out if I’m doing something wrong here. I’ve uploaded three videos on my channel and each has pretty good engagement- a high like (7.4%) and subscription rate (8.5% of views), about 30% watched on very long videos, and a lot of return viewers. I’ve been starting out at a 10-15% CTR with a ton of watch time, and once the first big impression bump comes the marginal CTR goes to like 6-7% and the marginal watch time to around that 30%. And thats it, it never gives me a second impression push to a wider audience. Just that initial one where I thought it was performing fairly well? Is it not? Anything to work on here to improve for my next video?

Golden Gate Outfit!

Made a little sweater and hat inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge where my husband kinda sorta works. My color ended up a little brighter than intended but the warm red was close-ish. Managed to catch the bridge at its best and foggiest this morning

Test Knit Experience Thread!

Based on a recent post here, here’s a thread for folks to share their testing knitting experiences and rating.

I feel like it would be good to not only share what your “rating” is but also the why. Some people might really dislike a super social buzzy test group, others may love it.

Starting off,

Emily Y Chen (Em Knits on instagram): 5/5.
I really like structure and she was very communicate, set bi-weekly soft suggested “deadlines” and check ins and was very quick to respond to questions in the pattern. She also allowed alterations and had suggestions if people (like myself) encountered any fit issues. It also was a generous test window for a vest (12 weeks). It was not a super social experience but it was still fun. Her patterns are also some of the most pretty, detailed and clean ones I’ve ever seen. Intense though!

ETA: here is the old thread of reviews for quick access. Thank you u/goliathfrogcrafts for linking below

Candid and slightly more organized view of my home shelf

Small wrinkle- all the novels my partner and I have read in the last 3 years have been audiobooks. You can imagine why.

Best toddler bike options?

We’ve got an incredibly active 17 month old and are planning to get him a “bike” of some kind for his 18 month half birthday. We just can’t decide what kind to get him.

Most PT stuff online and modern advice seems to point towards balance bikes being the best for kids and teaching them to actually cycle. But, whenever I see balance bikes at playgrounds they go fairly unused, while tricycles get lots of attentions. Also, I think he’d enjoy the pedal mechanism- I don’t think he’ll understand it at first but he’s honestly very quick at picking up new movement based skills. And at the end of the day, we want to get him something he’ll have fun using and not something that goes unused.

Parents who’ve used both or either- which did your kid like?

I finished my first test knit!

I just finished my first test knit- the Maisie Vest by Emily Y Chen. Can’t link a pattern because it won’t be out until August at the earliest. But this was such a joy to knit (and a slog at times with the 32 stitch gauge) and I’m now kinda hooked on test knitting. Would highly recommend this vest and testing for Emily!

I used Rosa Pomar Vovo in shade 09 and also only have positive things to say about it! Genuinely a 10/10. A nice rustic yarn that blocks out fairly soft and holds cables like a charm

ETA: buttons were from Haulin Hoof Farm Store. They make really cute notions

2nd ETA: just so folks know, the pattern calls for a sport or fingering + mohair on size 5 needles, to reach a 32 stitch gauge on the cables. I’m not as tight a knitter as the designer so I sized down to a size 4 needle with sport yarn and hit gauge perfectly.

Bind off for 1 by 1 ribbed button band?

Working on a test knit right now that has a 1 by 1 twisted ribbed button band. I’ve only done double knit button bands before so I actually haven’t dealt with this style of button band.

The pattern calls for standard bind off or your preferred style of bind off. The designer used a standard bind off for the samples, and glancing at the cardigans of a few other designers I know and like, many seem to use standard bind offs (or some other form of “flat” bind off) on their ribbed button bands as well. It seems oddly cleaner than expected. Only one other knitter has finished and they used Italian and it looks, as I’d expect, very good. But surprisingly maybe not as clean as the plain old standard bind off. Could be down to the knitter though.

My instinct was to go Italian for all of it- I already did on the arm openings and bottom- but I’m now wondering if a standard just for the button band is better.

For experienced cardigan/vest makers- what works best for you? Does the standard or Italian create a cleaner edge? Does one do a better job supporting the edge against curling and becoming misshapen over time? Is there a general best practice here?

Special Occasion Yarn Suggestions?

I feel silly posting this because I know the answer is always “get them a gift card! Don’t buy yarn for a knitter.” But I’m the recipient here!

My husband wants to get me a sweaters worth of some splurge yarn I wouldn’t usually buy for myself for Father’s Day and honestly??? I’m drawing blanks here and looking for suggestions.

I like slightly more rustic wools but candidly all of the yarns I like at my local stores are pretty in budget for me. Sandnes Garn, Rosa Pomar, Kelbourne Woolens, etc etc.

He asked if there were any mills in Ireland or Scotland or somewhere else abroad I wanted to get yarn from and my answer was “???”

I’m considering maybe asking for a sweaters worth of something from La Bien Aimee or Junction Fiber Mill? Though I’ve never felt either. But just curious if anyone has suggestions of expensive rustic-ish wools they’ve worked with.

Hi I can’t count, please send help

Okay, when it says work to 4 stitches before double stitch, is that counting your current stitch? So should it be a) DS x x x x last worked stitch or b) DS x x x last worked stitch. I feel brain dead, thanks for helping.

First summer garment!

I just finished the Yume Polo just in time for vacation. I desperately needed more light knits because springs and summers keep getting hotter and hotter and I seem to also constantly run warm these days.

It’s knit up in Queensland Collection United in the color marsh. I’m a big fan of the yarn and how it responds to blocking. It knits sort of like a cotton but then blooms in blocking really wonderfully to get rid of some tension issues. It also has a super soft hand and a pretty light strand - almost feels brushed or like woolen spun yarn? It’s really nice. The combo of the loose fit of the garment and pretty airy yarn made me actually able to wear this on the beach! Wool blends in 80 degrees? I didn’t think it was possible.

I like the pattern but have some notes/critiques. Overall it makes a beautiful, polished garment and if you’re an experienced knitter you’ll probably be fine with it. It also is definitely fit for men and I saw some ravelry projects bothered by the deep arm depth. If that’s an issue for you, adjust accordingly. I do think some parts of the pattern are overcomplicated by the writing and add steps that just… don’t need to be there. Things to “help” you pick up stitches correctly or the like when it’s just, not always really needed if you have experience. There also are a few stitch counts here and there that don’t quite make sense (ie it tells you to Kitchener off an odd number of stitches at one point. Not sure if that’s even possible but I had to work a row to get to an even stitch count first. Also I think one side of the placket asks you to pick up one more stitch than exists on hold? Just one or two little things- not deal breakers but fiddly if you don’t fix in advance.) I’d read the pattern thoroughly to spot things you want to skip or avoid before getting started.

The entire body was knit in a flurry over about 3 days to get it done in time for a trip to Mexico and I panicked and didn’t think I’d have time for Italian bind off for it. Still love the finish and probably won’t go back to fix it. It’s probably the most “wearable” knit I’ve made. And it stands up to throwing my kid in the air. So, a win!

Pics are Day one, 4 months and 6 months. Tried to keep the camera angle as close as I could to the same between pics. I really oscillate on if I think there’s been that much of a change. I can clearly tell my eyebrows are getting darker, and I have enough stache hairs that I have to shave. But I have yet to get gendered correctly by any adults (toddlers and young kids though? Oddly get it right like half the time). But I know it’s a marathon.
