Yarn properties and science behind it

Anybody knows any recourses where I can find information on different yarns properties. Cotton, wool, linen, acrylic, different blends etc. I tried to find information by googling but I only really found small bits of widely known information.

Are there any books or internet recourses that go in depth into all this stuff

Yarn Haul!

Made the trip to Webs tent sale again this year and I’m obsessed with everything I got. I’m going to get to knit my first ever 100% cashmere sweater! I only paid $10 a ball for the 100% cashmere and $6 for the 95% cashmere which is a crazy deal. Still thinking about what I might want to make with all this, especially the single skeins!!

Substitute for Noro Madara Sake

Hi everyone, I am looking to make a sweater with a yarn color similar to the Noro Madara yarn in the color Sake, but it is very hard to find that yarn color in stock anywhere online. Since it is a popular yarn, I was wondering if anyone has found a good dupe for that colorway? I tried looking for tweed yarns but it is hard to find one with a similar color. Thanks!

Renn Faire Yarn

Got some handspun yarn at the renn faire, left is Angora rabbit right is non-kid mohair, about light fingering weight. Anyone have suggestions for patterns to make with them? The Angora is as soft as a cloud, I'm thinking a scarf, unsure on the mohair yet!

Can anyone help me ID these?

Hi, I got these without tags but I'm thinking they might be Hobbii. Can anyone help me identify them? They both seem fine and one is shiny , lighter one is more muted.

Best deal on super fine-fine cotton yarn?

Where have you found the best deal on cotton yarn? I typically buy mine from Hobbii, but I just received an order and forgot some but I don't want to spend another $70 to get free shipping. Is there anywhere else that offers the same or better quality at a really good deal?

How does Petite Purl hold up to washing?

EDIT: ok, I won’t use it to make a baby blanket. 😊 Feel free to chime in with your favorite yarn for a baby blanket. Mom asked me for something yellow and I have yet to see something that wasn’t pastel.

Hello! Has anyone used Loops & Threads Petite Purl yarn for a baby blanket? I used the yarn recently for a wheat stitch cup cozy and I loved how easy it worked up. I’ve previously used it for amigurumi only. I’m wondering how it holds up after a few washes as a blanket. The label says you can machine wash, but to dry flat. However, does it stay soft and looking nice after being washed several times? Thank you so much.

A yarn with similar colorway?

I'm looking for a yarn that could give me similar color palette that makes me think of 90s bowling alley carpets. Sadly I only have one ball of it and hobii discontinued this colorway (and with the AI stunts they've been doing I don't know if I'll ever buy from them again).

I know that I could mix and match separate yarns but I'm wondering if anyone knows a similar color changing yarn.

Preferably something that is available in the UK/Europe and made of natural fibers but I'm also just curious in general :)

How to dye a store-bought ball of yarn at home?

I'm doing color work socks and there's not that many places around me that sell sock yarn and and ones that do are sports weight instead of fingering weight but I found one brand that I like and it only has like 12 colors

so I was just planning on dying the white yarn to any color I need but I was wondering do I need to take it apart and use a Niddy Noddy or should I use one of those like hat knitting machines that I have to just knit one big tube and dye it like that

Or can I just dye it in the ball it already comes in I'm just worried if I do that it'd be hard to wash all the dying c out and make sure it's evenly spread

And I know you have to boil water to dye stuff but the yarn says to use cold water and low heat so any tips on that one also be good

Need help choosing shades of gray

Hi, I'm going to be working on a crochet tapestry in grayscale and I'm having a hard time choosing the middle shade of gray. Im looking at hobbii friends 8/8 for white, black, dark gray, light gray and medium gray. I would love your thoughts on which medium gray looks best, or if you have any other yarn suggestions (keeping in mind I'm trying to keep the cost of yarn down). The 2 grays I'm trying to decide on are the bottom 2 in the collage, which are the same as the last 2 pictures.

Thanks for helping!

Yarn ID - label is blank

Hello! I just picked up this pretty ball of yarn, the label is completely blank. Very soft. Image search didn’t get me a match, but if anyone knows or can suggest what the fiber might be, I appreciate it!

Need recommendations for skin sensitive yarn

Hey y'all. A neighbor I grew up next to is battling cancer. She is going through chemo and I want to crochet her something. I live far away now so it's really all I can think of to show support.

I'm looking for a yarn to make her a hat. Her favorite color is sage. I have been to all of the LYS in my area searching for a worsted weight sage in a fiber that won't irritate her scalp like maybe cotton mix or alpaca but haven't been able to find anything suitable. I don't want to use anything wool because I fear it will be too scratchy on her scalp.

Any yarn recommendations would be really appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Going to my first yarn/wool festival!

Looks like there is the Wool Market in Estes Park, CO happening early June! I've been crocheting for a long time and started knitting earlier this year. I've never been to a yarn festival before and wanted some initial thoughts from folks online! How do you plan which yarns to buy? Is it project based or do you just go for it? Do you create a budget? I'm just thinking there will be only yarn vendors but are there other types of items being sold? I'm guessing yarn prices might be a bit higher than usual retail stores like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc but I think that's fine since it's for a special occasion! Any other thoughts, tips, or suggestions when I go?

Update: thank you all for the handy info! I feel like I have a better idea of what to expect and am planning some projects and yarns needed. Maaaybe I should update my budget to be a bit higher than what I thought I'd go in with. 😁 If I remember, I'll update this post or create another of everything I purchased. Thank you all again. ✨

Reasonable expectations or SABLE in denial - looking for advice and opinions.

EDIT: In case other people haven’t heard the term: SABLE means ‘Stash Accumulated/Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy’ it’s a descriptor for stash sizes of “you can’t reasonably use this before you die”

——

For context: I am 39, a full time housewife with no kids and minimal responsibilities. Depending on the day I have anywhere between one and five hours to crochet.

Due to clearance stock ups, gifts, inheritance, and several very good Black Friday sales in the past my current stash is easily approaching 1 million combined yards.

I have projects decided on for the vast majority of yarn I own. I have a fairly large community of friends and family that are all too happy to receive presents and I make gifts regularly. I am *always* working on something.

Husband is happy to drive when we go out and leaves me free to crochet shotgun.

—-

Recently a fiber arts group I participate in (in person) was comparing stash sizes and current projects.

I mentioned the approximate size of mine (still working on cataloguing everything but that means I’m doing data entry instead of crocheting. Boo.) and one woman I am not particularly friendly with make a kind of rude noise and said “save some for the rest of us BEFORE you die.”
She laughed after, I don’t really care what her intention with the comment was because we’re not friends, but it did make me wonder. She isn’t aware of what my life is like or the opportunities to craft that I am afforded day to day.

Am I actually at the point of SABLE? When I look at what I own and think about my personal expectations I don’t think I am. Based on family history I expect to be alive and able to crochet well into my 80s. The math says this shouldn’t be a problem, like I’m not the worlds fastest crocheter but I’m certainly not *slow* by any means.

So was she just being catty or do I have a problem?

Self-striping mint and white cotton?

I’ve received a request from a dear family member for a hat in these colors. This was a baby hat in a hospital, so I’m guessing it’s cotton. Does anyone know what this might be?

TFW you JUST win Yarn Chicken ☺️

This was the last bit from a skein that almost didn’t have enough to finish the round, but there was even enough to weave in the baby tail (1.5”/3.8cm)
